This has been bugging me for quite some time and in fact has kept me up on a few occasions imagining what they could possibly do with the series. I would imagine the next obvious step would be the 19th century but where to after that?

The 20th century brings in the World Wars and the Cold War but it doesnt really seem like the correct setup for a Total War game which used the distrust of countries and constant warring between all nations of the world.

Plus warfare changed in those times, a large grouping of soldiers is more a target then it is a threat. The world advanced so quickly that I just have a hard time imagining where exactly the franchise will go.

So what are your thoughts? Will the lack of history end this series or will it rehash old ideas or will it press on into the future?

Where to next? The $2 bin at Gamestop.

Total War died with Empire. poor support, Terrible AI and Gameplay tactics that amount to little more than stand in a line and shoot.

I was a huge huge fan of Total War from Shogun all the way up to Medieval II. Empires was the single greatest disappointment I have experienced in gaming and then they make a whole new game just to do bug fixes... which amount to "We didn't actually fix anything, we just removed all the shit that didn't work and are charging you $30 for it."

Unless they seriously change their tactical gameplay there really is nowhere else. After the American Civil War I don't think there were any more major wars that had soldiers marching in formations like those that are always in Total War games.

Total War: Imperialism

Think about it, it could have the struggle for Africa, colonization of Asia, encompass the globe. Campaigns could be conquer Africa, the British Empire, etc. During the struggle to gain colonies preceding WWI every nation-state was struggling to upset the Balance of Power. It would be brilliant!

They haven't even stripped mined all of European history yet let alone other regions.

Personally, I'd love to see a Three Kingdoms: Total War.

Post Apocalypse: Total War. You have armies fighting with sticks and scraps of metal.

Part of the problem is that Enlightenment Age warfare just isn't very inherently interesting. If they stick to what they do best, which is melee, siege engine, and archery combat as seen in Rome and Medieval 1/2 (and Shogun as well), they'll be fine.

Personally I'd like to see a Shogun 2: Total War done with the Empire/Napoleon graphics engine.

Rome or Shogun 2 or BUST.

Seriously, I will not buy any of Creative Assembly's products until they out do the modding community, for once.

Rome 2: Total War - Rome is the game that actually got me into RTS and also one of my "relic games" (like Silent Hill 2 or FF7) that I replay every now and again despite the ludicrously horrid graphics and idiotic AI because it it just THAT fucking awesome.

As the Civilization games spawned Alpha Centauri I'd like to see the Total War games spawn some strange fantasy/sci fi version of themselves. They've exhausted a lot of what they can do on Earth so why not?

Agree 100%

This whole DLC factor has almost killed that games modding community. Sure there are some great mods but compare them to the number we had for M2? Sad...

I am enjoying the Napoleon MP Campaign. But outside of that Empire was the WORST iteration of this IP, hands down.

Galaxy: Total War

I'm sure the guys at Creative Assembly could be the ones that finally create the perfect full-3D space RTS. The technology would certainly allow it.

Quoted. For. Truth.

Funny thing is, the Orient and India may actually offer more wiggle room than Europe does at this point from a game mechanic design point of view. It's bad as a marketing tool, since most of the western audience isn't as interested in Asian history. However, with Europe done from early Rome to the end of Renaissance it may be hard to pull out another non-sequel game with a European setting.

Of course, they can always hit us with a Rome 2 or Shogun 2. As long as these releases aren't as broken (and crappy) as Empire.
