Hell, even by late game in Empire, it's a silly idea to march onto an enemy's position. I considred my own infantry nothing more than defense against assault for my artillery.
In Empire I field 2 kinds of army: a field army and a siege army.

The field army runs very heavy toward infantry (mostly grenadiers and light infantry) with some light cav to scout, mop up routed units and chase particularly annoying units out of hiding. If I bother with arty in these armies, it's always horse artillery for the mobility.

The siege army is VERY artillery heavy. Mortars, mortars and more mortars with a handful of grenadiers to provide security and serve as an assault force should one be necessary after the mortars have turned everything into rubble.

Or mash them all together into one huge game and just call it "Total War". Start in the Roman era and work your way through into modern day...

It sounded better in my head
You missed having them team up with Firaxis to make Civilization: Total War.

but complaining that 'this' is the game that ruined the franchise... well... it's kinda silly when you look back in retrospect at the their past games
Yeah, I always considered the M2TW bugs that had the AI ignore the fact your archers had turned half their army into decorative pincushions and that getting cavalry to charge was a hit and miss affair (proper charges not just running through enemy formations at high speed, although until they fixed the bug it was more effective that actually trying to charge) to be more worrying than anything Empire has thrown at me.

LEGO: Total War.

Modern Warfare: Total War.

Guitar Hero: Total War.

These seem like the only logical follow ups to the series.

EDIT: Oh and, The British Election: Total War.

Well now that we have Total War, why not introduce Total Famine, Total Conquest and Total Death!
From there we could go to Total Apocalypse!

It sounds like an idea to me :D
Who is Conquest and what have you done with Pestilence?

They already made "Spartan: Total Warrior" (shudders at the memory) so the historical accuracy precedent no longer exists.
A console action title only loosely associated with the core franchise games doesn't count... that way lies madness and accepting Brotherhood of Steel as a canon Fallout game.

edit to add: Not that I'd be against a Fantasy TW title... Although, preferably not some popular fantasy IP that needs to die and the terrbile books that spawned them erased from human memory (and before anyone starts rushing to the defense of their favourite fantasy setting thinking that I mean their fave in particular, I mean most popular fantasy IPs need to die and be erased from human memory). If it has to be fantasy let it be a non-generic, original IP.

Those are the original 4 horsemen, over time Conquest was gradually phased out from minds of the believers and replaced with pestilence so that conquests from the powers that ruled in the times of old were free to do as they wish ;) Look it up :p Pestilence is what Conquest was replaced with

For Napoleon, my field armies were a couple cav for taking out routing units or artillery, half infantry, half rocket artillery and my "siege" armies were more assault wave armies of purely infantry; micro them right and you have a third of them providing covering fire against enemy units on the walls and sallying forth from the fort while the rest climb the walls to make french kabobs
