I don't think the cartoon would have lasted, as it doesn't really follow the canon of the story arcs. I think the art style is amazing and it would make a great "What If..." comic series, or Web based cartoon.

Definitely would have watched a few episodes just to see how they did it.

Also, group photo from left to right: Clay-Face, Two-Face, Penguin, Killer Croc, Riddler, Batgirl/Batwoman/Robin/Oracle (depending on who it's referring to), Batman, Scarecrow, Catwoman, Joker, Harley, Poison Ivy, Bane, Mr. Freeze.
Beat me to it. The only ones I didn't guess is Scarecrow and Catwoman, but it's obvious now that I think about it. I can't help but think this is a really fun concept though, how you can not like it unless you think Batman is SRS BUSNESS.

This looks like it'd make a great web comic spoofing the Batman universe, but not a TV series. The appeal would burn out too fast trying to create content that would reflect the true personalities of the villains and heroes.

EDIT: Of course Teen Titans was actually a great cartoon, so who knows.

That looks unbelievably stupid.

Maybe it could work as a so bad it's good parody, but then you'd want someone other than DC to do it so they aren't afraid to stick the boot in, though you have to watch out for copyright.

No need to guess, the names of all the characters are on the bottom of the picture in uber-small print

Yeah, but that spoils the fun.

Wait, your first post on the Escapist is about some tiny detail which people don't need to know about? Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

As others have said, it could potentially make a great spoof series on the web, or maybe have a good one season run, but aside from that, I dont think they can do all too much with it. I would say that it if they were to get anything 'quality' from it, is that it should definately not be aimed at kids. Then again, it would depend entirely on the writer.... Perhaps if they hired the guy who did Invader Zim?

Let's say I love Batman and I would have definitely given this a shot. For one thing Batman is not always a dark gritty series, and sometimes was really great when it was full of camp "see Brave and the Bold". This could have turned out great or terrible but I think it should have gotten a chance, just looking at it it has a great potential of being hilarious.

I believe this project was replaced with Batman Beyond. If I am right, I am doubly glad Batman was not reduced to whining about the prom.

I Like the art but teen-dramedy is a horrible idea. Emotional depth doesn't develop until later in life, and that's what makes the characters in Batman tragic/entertaining--they are emotional cripples, just like the average teenager.

Execution is really important, though. If they played it as a self-conscious joke it might work, but that hasn't been the Bat-fashion for a while.
Obviously you haven't seen Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The common comparison for that is it's like an animated version of the Adam West TV show.

The character designs are reminiscent of Batman: The Animated Series, though, and that was pretty srs business.
They seem to have more in common with the more recent animated series The Batman (confusing, I know). In particular Joker and The Penguin look very similar. But that series didn't have Scarecrow in it, so that's why he has more in common with the older design.

I couldn't see this doing well even if they had permission to do some pretty violent stuff. Batman in high school so when did he train as a ninja during elementary school?
thats why comic books are shot down so easily, this "continuity elitists" take away all the fun

"Bruce studies Jujitsu after school in the dojo of sensei-Ras Al Gul" is that enough for your standards???

now a real reason to actually WHINE about is, the most iconic character of the series (besides Batman) is the Joker, who, as a character, is a psicopat maniac that disregards human lifes to make a "POINT", mass murder and complex plots just for the heck of it make this character really appealing, interesting and incredibly scary, how they plan to transfer this characteristics into a High School setting is beyond me, i mean, they cant actually kill anyone right?? and putting the Joker as the idiot kid doing stupid things to anoy people would definitely kill the whole series faster than you saying "FLASH!"

as for the idea, i dont think its bad, i just dont think it could work with such cast, i can already see "bane" as the bully, "E. Nigma" as the nerd, "Scarecrow" as the dealer... yeah, thats what he looks like, i can only actually complain about cat woman, seriously?? a goth/sexy/crazy chick?? come on!, i would have figured her out to be a cheerleader, with the whole "Feline" thing in her part... and that hair looks dreadfull... also batgirl is the nerd girl in love with bruce but is too ashamed to say anything and so when she is batgirl she actually acts like she wants but while being out of costume is scared?!?!?!? that whole plot has being made sooooooo maaaaany tiiiiiimes i would turn off the TV the momment it started

now THOSE are reasons to complain, not this "ITS NOT CANON!!!"

have you ever heard of "Spin Offs"???

on a side note, and completelly irrelevant... does anyone else things this would make a cool "Rule 34"????

Since the class photo says "Class of 2009" and batman beyond began in 1999 I'm going to go ahead and say no.

More lightly it was turned down for Brave and the Bold. Which is just as camp as this could have been btw.

Obviously we can't tell whether this would have been any good just from a couple of pictures but if it'd kept a tongue in cheek attude and made it super self aware I could see it happening. Have to agree that they probably couldn't have kept it up for long.

Still, maybe we'll see and Elsewhere comic down the line.
