Fact is, if I (and a lot of other people) see someone in a trench coat I am gonna assume your a goth. This is the way of humans, generalization and labling is just somthing we do.
Surely, that can't be true. Wouldn't it depend heavily of the reainder of the person in questions attire?

Holy fuck. Someone asks where to buy a fucking article of clothing and it turns into a fucking semantics lesson. Really, if you don't have a suit on under the trench coat you just come off looking like a d-bag. You don't look "cool" or "nonconformist" and nobody thinks you look "mysterious".

Please don't be like everyone else who wears a trench coat these days. A trench coat is part of an outfit. This outfit includes slacks and, at the very least, a collared shirt, if not a tie. you don't want to look like some sort of gigantic poopsocking neckbearded douche.
of course, wear a tie and some nice pants, with the option of leather gloves.

I think you should go with a duster. You'll look like Lorenzo Lamas, and women will find you irresistible. That's not a guarantee, though, I saw it on TV. So if you trust TV...

I have a black leather trenchy =D

Anyway, I bought it at Value Village, I'm not sure if they have those down in the US, but everything they sell is uber cheap and usually in good condition. Around $30-$40 I think. The only problem is, they're all in the women's section, if it works at your local VV as it does over here =p
yea i have been wondering why all the longer coats are in the womens sections, and i think it would be awkward being a man in a womens trench coat. then again i wear pumas, wich everyone at my school tells me are for women...
also by chance may you be a women?

Well to pull off a trench coat you need:
-to be a natural badass
-A proper suit/tie/fedora combination
-To either look scary or cold

Try a greatcoat instead, much the same but usually a bit thicker so it's got an arguable use, specially if you live somewhere cold. Also it depends on if you are trying to look badass, in which case it won't work or if you just like the ability to have a dozen pockets, depending on the coat.

Okay, then...allow me to respond TO THE ACTUAL QUESTION...jeez...

Seydaman, there's a ton of different styles and price ranges on what constitutes a "trench coat". If you want the look of someone who could blend in with the Wall Street types, any kind of London Fog coat would suffice; those are the types with the three large buttons down one side, and almost always come with a belt(see that picture of Rorschach). If you're looking for more of a "bad-ass" style, you'll want something called a Reverend's/Preacher's Coat (hey, I don't name 'em, I'm just a fan.) These are the style that tend to hug close on the shoulders and through the trunk, flaring out at the hips, almost like bell bottoms-for an example of that, done well, check out the coat Ashe Corven wears in the second Crow movie. There are also dusters and riding coats, but if you want quality out of one of those, you're going to have to get a Jacaru or a Drizzabone which can be a little pricey, but are definitely worth it.

A great coat is exactly what it says on the tin. Its a great coat, trench coats/dusters are also nice and are more for the mild-cold areas. If you live in someplace where you get quite a bit of snow I would go with a great coat. The collar would protect your neck and a fedora or the like could keep your head warm.

To answer the question (sort of): Check Sportsmansguide.com. They have a lot of military surpulus stuff thats just cool. And ironically I cound TV tropes while trying to get through my schools filter and get to the Escapest so that I could watch Urealms.

I wouldn't know anything about trenches in the US, but I just wanted to post that I'm a fellow trench-coat lover. Warm, comfortable, tons of well-placed pockets, and it has this quality that the 1% of people who can pull the look off look FANTASTIC in them. I consider myself one such person. I get far more admiring (may be too strong of a word) looks than "heh, idiot" looks on the street.

Plus, it doubles as a Halloween outfit (me and 4 friends donned trenchcoats and toy Thompsons last Halloween... we just needed a Ford T)
