Halo 3: Excluding halo reach, 3 was my favorite in the Trilogy.

Gears of War 3: Gears 2 and Gears 3 are pretty close, great in different ways.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood: Yes not technically labeled "3". It was pretty much my favorite Assassin's Creed game of all of them.

Other then that I don't have a whole lot of "3" games. Those should be proof enough.

I hope it is, but I've seen too many posts, made seriously, to give him/her the benefit of the doubt. If it is, then my bad, although my point still stands.

There are people who think this for real, and they're nuts.

On the subject of Mass Effect... as much grief as the second part gets from the RPG crowd, I wonder how you could have continued that story without completely gutting your character progression in the first game. Does Sheppard get hit in the head and forget all of his soldiering skills? Do you get an evil boss who takes away all your really good weapons and stick you with a Sling Shot +1?

The problem of just about every RPG I've ever played is that you start off insanely weak and end up insanely powerful, which is kind of cool for one installment; but there's no up for you to go. You have to shift to another character to keep that formula viable. Otherwise, it just turns into a heroic version of Freddie Kruger, instead of explain how the villain came back to life yet again, you have to explain how the hero got almost completely depowered yet again.

X-Men 1: Yeah that was good, X-Men 2: Yeah, that was better. X-Men 3: Yeah, that was not good. X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Losing Hope, (HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO DEADPOOL). X-Men Origins: First Class: "Oh damn that's good"

A good example of how movie series that hit the fourth movie generally need a total reboot in the fifth movie. Example: Batman, Returns, Forever, Batman & Robin, Begins (Reboot), Dark Knight (Reboot sequel).

Or for the Trek geeks here: Generations (TNG #1), First Contact (TNG #2), Insurrection (TNG #3), Nemesis (TNG #4), Trek XI (Reboot). Yes, I know that for the 6 TOS movies Final Frontier sucked and doesn't fit the "fifth movie is reboot" theme, but that's due to what's basically the Star Trek Curse (Pre-Nemesis: Every odd movie sucks, every even movie is good. Nemesis supposedly screwed it and JJ's Trek balanced out the suck in Nemesis).


Anyways, going back to games;
Pre-WoW Blizzard: WarCraft 3/Frozen Throne is my favourite of the WarCraft series.
Post-WoW Blizzard: I know I'm preempting it and calling it early but Diablo 3 is gonna SUCK compared to the classic that is D2/LoD, which wrapped up the story of the Three Prime Evils (Diablo, Mephisto, Baal) just fine, whilst having you wipe out two of the Lesser Evils (Andariel & Duriel) on your path to destroy the Three Brothers, leaving just 2 Lesser Evils left (Belial & Azmodan).

Someone who played every God of War enlighten me (I only played 1 and 2).

I find Gothic to be a perfect example of this.

Gothic = Great game with some flaws and not very deep.

Gothic II: Night of the Raven = Amazing game that built on the first, had a deeper story and some of the most enjoyable gameplay I've experienced.

Gothic 3 = A drop in everything that made the first two so good. While the game world was fantastic (Varant in particular), the gameplay, story and NPC's suffered terribly. I think the game was trying to be too big than it could really handle.

Both are still very good. I replayed through the Crash Bandicoot trilogy (for there are only three Crash Bandicoot games, no matter what anyone else says)

What about Crash Team Racing? That was an insane amount of fun, I still play it with friends on PS3.

Personally, I think Lord of the Rings defies your trilogy-itis theory. Return of the King kicked so much more ass than Two Towers.

In addition to trilogy-itis, there's something I like to call the "Capcom syndrome".

I haven't played the Castlevania series, but from perpetuated opinions it sounds like C1 kicked ass, C2 fucked up hard, then C3 went back to the kickass, C4 was a remake of 1 that kicked even more ass, then Symphony of The Night on PS1 completely radicalized the franchise, but then C64 came and double-jumped the shark and never got a good title since.

I have three problems with this post:

1. Castlevania was made by Konami, not Capcom. But that's not important.
2. You've never played Castlevania? Go play Castlevania now!! It's AWESOME!!
3. Okay, time for seriousness. Who the hell said there haven't been any good Castlevania games since C64? There are some great ones for the GBA and DS. Circle of Moon, Aria of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Dawn of Sorrow...these games are amazing.

Having just finished Uncharted 3, I have to say it is far and away the best in the series. So...myth busted.

For me, it was the weakest. The gameplay barely changes, the formula is as rigid as a virgin in a brothel. It is so contrived and boring, my favourite part was walking through the desert, because that's all it was.

Also for a Myth to be busted, a cannon has the get shot through a house, I mean proven beyond reasonable doubt.

OT: Personally I despised the combat system in ME1 and I loved ME2 to death, my hopes are high for ME3. I never played the first gears of war, but I thought that the second and third were exciting and enjoyable, I was glad to see that the third added new weapons and enemies in the third(Savage locust, lambent, seige beasts, serapeds, armored kantus, beast barge, those weird little drone things, etc.)

It eschewed the cheesy supernatural crap that killed the third act for both of the first two games for me (it did worry me for a bit, but I guess I'm thankful for hallucinogenic water). So I very much prefer its story overall because of that, and because I like Sully.

Gameplay wise, it's an improvement on the first two games and had that outstanding sinking ship section. I loved that part.

I post in red text to honor my favorite sports team. Nothing more nothing less. I do this on every forum I'm on.

As for having reasons why I hate Mass Efect 2 I do believe I gave a nice summary of why in my original post.
The horrid story.
The retcons. (I loath any form of retconing)
The worse combat that made it go from a nice unique experience to a clone of a lot of modern cover based shooters. (of which I hate all shooters that rely on cover based combat and have innate regenerating health) The worse combat also came with severely weakened Biotics and made them a joke. (seriously armor now stops them as well as regular shields I am not impressed)
The Arrival DLC making the entire fucking plot of the main game pointless and made me feel it was a better Mass effect 2 than the actual main game. A DLC should never be the only good thing story wise in a game and should not trivialize and make pointless the entire reason of the main story of the main game.
Shepard dying, being resurrected, and Cerberus now being good guys should be self explanatory. And now it seems Mass Effect 3 will retcon Cerberus into being evil again. I did mention I hate retcons right?

For a more comprehensive story on why I hate Mass effect 2 (and to save me from several posts worth of typing) go look up Smudboy's Youtube channel. He does a very good video series explaining why Mass effect 2 was a load of horse shit.

I really didn't comment on your hating of Mass Effect, more of I commented on your criticizing of it in a way that seemed to be a trolling run and a plead for attention. BTW while we're on topic if you're going to come up with complaints, do a better job man. ME1 combat was freaking awful, there was no tension, I didn't even feel like I was fighting it was so clunky. I don't care if something is similar to something else, if I have an amazingly fun time then they're doing it right, I had 10x as much fun playing ME2 then I ever did playing ME1.

Also would you care to point out exactly how the bloody Hell Arrival made the game pointless? Did you not listen to Bioware when they said that it was a stepping stone DLC that is going to connect ME2 and ME3? And what was wrong with the story, oh let me guess, you're one of those people that have zero willing suspension of disbelief. Shepard dying was a point to prove exactly how powerful both the Collectors and Cerberus was, Collectors for being able to kill him, Cerberus for bringing him back. And apparently you missed the point of the story, Cerberus wasn't supposed to be looked on as good guys, the idea is that the situation is so bad that Shepard has to work with a terrorist group in order to get things done. The Enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I have two that defies it! Although neither of them are really trilogies (I'm kind of picky with that term), but rather three-movie-series, but since that is what everyone is posting anyway, I'll go ahead and do the same.

Dollars trilogy! The Good the Bad and the Ugly is the third and generally regarded as the strongest movie in that series. Adding to that, the second movie is regarded as the weakest.

Also, Mission Impossible. The two first ones aren't all that great, but the third one is actually pretty damn good if you turn it off 15 minutes from the end and imagine the rest of the movie ^^

The problem with most modern "Trilogies" comes from them not being created as true trilogies. They are often a stand alone work followed by a sequel duology.

I quite enjoyed ME2, perhaps even more so than the original. You saying it sucked doesn't really prove anything other than that you didn't like it.

I did enjoy ME2 more than the original. They fixed most of the problems I'd had with the original combat-wise, and although I did not expect them to totally take out the inventory, the inventory system in ME1 was awful, I spent probably as much time switching out for new weapons, armor and upgrades as I did playing the damn thing. The revamp for ME3 sounds nice, though. Now if only tehy'd simply improved the vehicle sections instead of giving us that horrible mining minigame and the Hammerhead DLC.

Also, even though the story did get rather strange in the end, I think people are a bit too hard on Bioware for it. I understand some might have thought it was bad, but you're overreacting if you claim it "ruined the series," considering it wasn't even a series until the second game came out. Easily not bad enough to warrant not playing the final game.

Everyone's so down on the planet-mining, but you know what I've found? It's incredibly soothing. I've woken up Saturday morning with a cracking hangover, then I've sat and scanned planets for a couple of hours and felt better. It's not bright flashing lights, loud noises or any form of excitement, but it's a necessary task and bizarrely relaxing.

Well it's certainly true in the main AVP games. AVP '3' was apparently terrible and AVP2 I can say for sure is a fantastic game.
