This movie looks awesome. I agree that remakes are kind of lame, but god dammit, it's the Coen Brothters making a god damned gritty western. There is no way that it won't be fuckin' awesome.

Pretty ballsy move to remake a John Wayne classic. All I can say is that they're going about it the right way. Jeff Bridges plus the Cohen brothers equals a potenial win situation. Since I've not seen the original I'll most likely check it out.

I don't think that being a remake automatically makes it bad. The remake of 3:10 to Yuma was infintely better than the original, and the original had John Wayne in.

Also, in my opinion Death Race's remake is better than the original (though neither are astounding), 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' is better than the originals, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings are better than the Ralph Bakshi, and Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes is better than a lot of the old films. That's just the remakes I have in my (relatively small collection next to me right now.)

Remakes are not always bad.
Agreed, also, let's not forget Bryan DePalma's "Scarface".

At least they are trying to make it their own movie and trying not to copy everything from the original. That's what the Nightmare on Elm Street remake ran into. It seemed like a copy of the original.
In some parts. On the Whole, it was just a boring cash-in on the name. In all honesty, I really wished they did the shot-for-shot remake instead. I might have invested more time watching it instead of doing my own riff-trax of the movie with my friends.

OT: I have not seen True Grit, but to be fair, I haven't really watched many Westerns, it's one of those genres that says so little to me. However, my father recently introduced me to The Wild Bunch, which was EPIC, to say the least. I am slowly starting to get into western films, and hopefully I'll check out the original (and maybe read the book too) and the remake as well.
