So I just saw this trailer.

It looks like it'll be a pretty decent movie, except for one problem.

You see, it's a remake.

And this is the Marshal from the original.

In case you can't see it, that's John Wayne. I repeat: John Freakin' Wayne! By the way, he won an Oscar for his performance here. I could do a rant about how awesome John Wayne is and the inherent futility of remakes, but I think this one speaks for itself.

I don't think that being a remake automatically makes it bad. The remake of 3:10 to Yuma was infintely better than the original, and the original had John Wayne in.

Also, in my opinion Death Race's remake is better than the original (though neither are astounding), 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' is better than the originals, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings are better than the Ralph Bakshi, and Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes is better than a lot of the old films. That's just the remakes I have in my (relatively small collection next to me right now.)

Remakes are not always bad.

Well fuck me, that looks brilliant!

I've never seen the original, but as a stand-alone movie, that looks like just the sort of thing I love to watch. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon kicking ass to a Johnny Cash soundtrack. Of course it helps that I'm a western fan anyway (although not a big enough western fan to have seen the original) :D

Also why are you judging it based on the fact it's a remake? So fuckin' what?

Allow me to elaborate. I'm not judging it just because it's a remake. I'm judging it because it's a remake of a good movie starring (arguably) the best western actor of all time in one of his most famous roles. In short: There's no way it will be as good as the original. I might think differently if I wasn't such a big fan of the Duke, but whatever.

That original movie was filmed in what would become my backyard growing up. That alone automatically makes and keeps that one my favorite regardless of how well the new one turns out...

First of all, it's the Coen Brothers. This film will likely be incredible. Also, I like the Western theme but was never a fan of older Western films...especially John Wayne, who I have never particularly liked. Taking these factors into account - especially the fact that it's the fucking Coen Brothers - I think it'll be an enojyable film. For me, atleast.

EDIT: my bad for saying that it was the Coen brothers AND director of No Country for Old Men, I am aware that they're the same... >.<

I preffer the original Death Race just because it's more camp and colourfull than the unremittingly grey/brown Statham version.

While 3:10 to Yuma was a good remake and probably better if just for Ben Foster's bad ass supporting role, the original is still very good.

Bram Stoker's Dracula despite Francis Ford Copolla's brilliant film making skills and Gary Oldman's fantastic if slightly camp perfromance as Dracula bring sexy rightfully back to the genre, is completely ruined by Keanu "Whoa" Reeves. Can't argue that.

I'm very hopefull for this film, I mean it's the Coen Brothers! They have to be my favourite all time film makers. And everything I've seen of the film so far has only been good, and Jeff Bridges seems perfect for the role.

Plus even John Wayne wasn't perfect *cough*Greenberets*cough*

I think it looks damn good, and I'll definitely view this film. Just because its a remake doesn't make it bad.

At least they are trying to make it their own movie and trying not to copy everything from the original. That's what the Nightmare on Elm Street remake ran into. It seemed like a copy of the original.

I like the Coen Brothers and I trust them to do well as with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn.

Also it should be known that True Grit is one of my favorite movies, I saw it when I was seven, and was the first movie I ever bought on DVD and watch it annually at Christmas with my dad and brother. I just hope it doesn't turn out like the Day the Earth Stood Still remake.

hmm fair enough then mate, I can understand that. I guess it would be like someone telling me they were going to remake any of the old Clint Eastwood westerns, without Clint Eastwood.

He's not all that. He pretty much does the same character in every film. My dad loved him, but then my dad actually bought into his hard-ass macho bullshit routine hook, line and sinker. It's worth reading what Frank Zappa has to say about John Wayne in "The Real Frank Zappa Book", now that's an eye-opener. I'll admit that True Grit is probably his best performance, he did show a few signs of actually trying to step out of his box in that one, I see the Oscar he got for it more as an "encouragement award" than anything else.

I get your point about remaking classic films though - if you're going to remake something from the past, remake something shitty and improve it, don't remake something that's already good. I don't have a lot of faith in the Coen Brothers, they're pretty hit-and-miss, they might be able to pull this one off though given that they seem to be unusually on-form lately but overall this still seems about as pointless as the Psycho remake.

Oh Fuck Yes!! I am so excited now. True Grit is a classic and a Coen brothers retake on it will be absolutely amazing. I think I just peed a little.

The Coen brothers are the best thing to ever happen to cinema. Any arguments will result in the trump card: The Big Lebowski.
