I recently took a class on social problems. Reading about all the war victims and starving children made me realize how lucky I am.

You should watch FullMetal Alchemist. Also how is a cranky old man all that miserable other than the fact he has to deal with kids on his lawn he should be pretty happy.
Oh, so its some special lightning infusion of terror etched onto his skull? I seriously have little time or patience for anime. Well, after a full lifetime of hardships and 'chilluns running around, he shouldn't have to deal with them in his final years of peace. Along with the fact that elderly people tend to have little patience for anyone loitering on their lawn.

It's almost impossible to be happy with what you've got. We all have goals and are unhappy when we havn't achieved them yet. When we do achieve them we still feel like something is missing so we set ourselves some new goals.

I suppose it is possible to be happy for some amount of time if you have achieved your goals but the achieving is not over in 1 second.

Allow me to explain with 2 examples:

A) (the obvious one) You have just bought a game and you are struggling through the levels because it has a very good storyline and you want to know what happens next. You can't wait and keep gaming until the end. At the end you have a great victory cut-scene and you feel like king of the land. Then the credits come and you realised you have done what you wanted: finish the game. But you are not satisfied because now you have nothing left to do except, browse for porn all day.

B) You are out with some friends and you see a hot looking human being of the opposite/same sex (you choose which one you prefer). You havn't had s*x in a long time (a feeling alot of gamers will be able to relate to I am sure) and so you are in the pursuit of this fine human being. After massive amounts of alcohol and possibly rohypnol he/she joins you for an evening stroll which happens to end at your bed. Your goal is complete and you are having hot smoking s*x. During this act you are achieving your goal and (well any normal person would be) very happy for a couple of seconds/minutes/hours (depending on your stamina I guess). But all good things must come to an end (unless you die in your sleep which in my case would mean that I would die a happy man.)

My point is that noone will ever be truly happy because everyone wants everything. And when they have everything they want more. One person's problems maybe worse then anothers in an objective view on the matter. But it doesn't mean that we shouldn't feel bad because we are out of mayonaise just because some african kid is starving.

(edit: this may seem a little harsh but it is not intended this way. I feel bad about all the starving people in the world but it doesn't make what i just wrote any less true)

A couple of years back I was travelling on the London Underground during rush hour. I was changing at a very busy station and heading down the stairs to the next platform when I spotted at the bottom a guy begging.

As I got closer I realised he was horribly horribly disfigured by I assume a fire, it was so bad I found it very hard to look at him. He also had no hands just some shrivelled stumps on the end of his arms. He had slung over them a jacket, which he used to collect change.

In quite a soft sounding voice he was asking people for for spare change as they went past but everyone just ignored him, what choked me up was that he apologized for asking to everyone who ignored his request for spare change.

I stood there for a while watching I was so struck by how fucked up the situation added to the fact I never saw a single person give him money, I felt like crying for the guy. Eventually I snapped out of it and went up to him and literally emptied the contents of my wallet into his jacket. He was so grateful that he kept thanking me over and over in this really sweet soft voice, which seemed so strange coming from such an alien face.

I got on my train and carried on my life secretly wishing that I never ended up like that and feeling immense sadness for that poor guys plight.

The discussion about eating pizza made me laugh out loud for some reason XD

[on topic] I used to be terrible for feeling sorry for myself, but now I'm grateful for everything and never let silly things get me down. When I see the homeless man who is most likely a pedo selling Big Issue's outside the bus stop I'm just glad I have a roof over my head, despite the fact we're struggling with money now.
I'm always telling my mum off for complaining about it. I say, "You've got 5 great grand kids, 3 kids including one fantastic daughter, who needs money?"
One day, it'll work :)

Since moving to England from South Africa, I have to say not anymore. If you live here and are on the streets its your tough luck, cause life ain't hard here.

Those such people are a percentage of the reason why I created the thread about Thanksgiving and the giving of thanks in October.

I am sorry, Twilight_Guy, but I have participated in some anime watching, and thus realizing that it is very boring, for me, I do not watch it. I actually meant it to be a little jive, and I do not think the receivee took it any other way. And if you meant my comments about the elderly, speak to my Opa.

LOL

Not laughing at you, but that's a very concise observation. I like it.

The autistic man at my college. However weird and awkward I may occasionally be in social situations, I just have to look at him trying to communicate to find comfort in myself.

A homeless person with a sign that said "Trying to save up for a hooker - Please help" Both made me laugh, give the guy a 20, and realize how lucky I am yet this guy was being far more optimistic then I was. (At least, I guess I took it as optimism).
OK, read that again...

BOTH made you laugh? As in funny sign, ha-ha, and look at that dude he's homeless ha-ha?

That homeless guy who keeps going through my trash, Oh wait, no I don't feel sorry for him.
Not after he steals 5 grand from you taping your credit card bill back together. Nope, I don't feel sorry for him at all.

If that was possible, if, I would give the homeless man a complete box set of Oprah. And a subscription to Maxim.
Then tell him to get off my property.

I had a friend who told me that his frat was doing good things and as an example he mentioned that they play an annual game with some mentally handicapped kids.

I remember saying, "Oh wow, you mean you let them play with the 'normal' people? You guys are so awesome."

I don't look down at people with disabilities so his logic seemed backwards to me.

Wow! If anyone is bold and desperate enough to have a sign like that must be one truly miserable SOB. I mean this guy is practically advertising how lonely he is in order to get money. He is not only miserable but smart and funny.
Now that I think about it the most miserable person in this situation is the hooker he pays to the dirty deed. And I do mean DIRTY.
