We Escapists love music, so I thought I'd make a thread about the music we love best; the music that's unique. There are millions of generic rap/rock/pop artists out there, so let's tribute the musicians who dared to make their own sounds, their own styles.

For a rule, you can only nominate ONE musician/band, and you have to explain yourself.

Here's my nomination: Gregg Gills, better known as Girl Talk.

Girl Talk's claim to fame is his music making methods. By cleverly combining several unauthorized samples from several songs, he creates an entirely new one. It's gotten him in trouble with the law many times, but it's also made him one of the most unique artists I've ever had the honor to see perform live.

But why explain myself when I can just let his music do it for him.

* 0:00 - 0:55 Beyoncé - "Get Me Bodied"
* 0:00 - 0:16 James Gang - "Funk #49"
* 0:02 - 0:13 DeBarge - "Rhythm of the Night"

* 0:26 - 0:27 Rick Astley - "Never Gonna Give You Up"
* 0:36 - 0:36 Full Force Family - "House Party"
* 0:36 - 0:55 The Jackson 5 - "Dancing Machine"
* 0:37 - 1:06 Beastie Boys - "Body Movin'"
* 0:54 - 1:06 Nine Inch Nails - "Down in It"
* 0:56 - 1:12 Rick Derringer - "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo"
* 0:59 - 1:10 Trick Daddy - "Drop (Low, Low, Low)"
* 0:59 - 1:10 Busta Rhymes featuring Kelis - "What It Is"
* 1:01 - 1:11 Gwen Stefani - "Serious"

* 1:12 - 1:59 Pras featuring Mýa and Ol' Dirty Bastard - "Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)"
* 1:13 - 1:48 Yo La Tengo - "Autumn Sweater"
* 1:49 - 2:24 Mims featuring Rasheeda - "Like This"
* 1:49 - 1:50 Janet Jackson - "Nasty"

I would have to support Dropkick Murphys for this topic.
Hardcore bango rock. Unique and awesome.
Unless some other band does that... In which case I must know.

Well, Explosions in the Sky are pretty unique to me.

They're an instrumental/rock/indie...something....?
Anyway, for all I know there could be millions of bands just like them, but I've not heard of any.
I love that band; I was just about to post them here. They're pretty similar in style to Mogwai, which is also very good.

Well my favorite band is pretty unique. Motion City Soundtrack. They have a techno/alternative feel. Justin's voice is AMAZING. It's high pitched, but it workes with the music.

This music Video is creepy. But I would advise you listen to it.

The Future Freaks me Out by Motion City Soundtrack. Enjoy =D

I like what Pink Floyd did with their music, by using other sound effects as well.

I agree. I love their hard rock covers of old folk songs like Auld Lang Syne, Johny I Hardly Knew You, Rocky Road to Dublin... It's all good.

I've always found Emilie Autumn's "violindustrial" music pretty unique, but I don't listen to much else like it, so maybe a million other people do exactly the same thing as she does.

I couldn't let you get away from this thread without telling you that it's "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya." Sorry. And if you haven't already, listen to State of Massachusetts, (F)lannigan's Ball, and Shipping up to Boston.

I apologise, it was a rare slip. And I have most of their songs already. Gotta love Kiss Me, I'm Shit-faced.

I'm kinda surprised Primus hasn't popped up yet

there isn't a single band out there that pulls off what Primus does and everything from Lalonde squealing away to the amazing bass playing of slap god Les Claypool is completely different from anything else I've ever heard in my days
