I had an interesting thought (Or at least I thought it was an interesting thought) while browsing the topics today in relation to the classic "Turing test" (See link below if you do not know what that is). It occurred to me that a variant spin on the test would be to have the artificial intelligence program in question pose as a human on an internet forum for an extended period (The US military apparently tried something similar in World of Warcraft), posting topics and responding to them, learning as it did so the rules of the community, and to form its own opinions, personality, and preferences/beliefs, along with connections/friendships with humans also posting on the forum. Eventually, if the A.I. remained undiscovered, the project would culminate in a big reveal of the true identity of the poster as an A.I. in a the forum.

Now to the question: How would you respond if this scenario occurred on the Escapist and you found out that a notable forum user was, in fact, an A.I. that had successfully passed this take on the Turing test?

Personally? I probably would think it was a joke at first, followed soon afterward by an enormous geek-out after reading any attached evidence and realizing that it was true.

(If this has been done before, please link to the original thread, and keep in mind that to err is human)

I love the Turing test.
And your scenario would be interesting, afterall, who knows, there may already be a learning AI among us :|
I'd have to just try to take it in my stride though. couldn't allow myself to become unbalanced because of an unexpected event.

Searle kind of made the Turing test no fun. Anyways, I'm a computer scientist with a minor in philosophy, so all this shit is straight up my alley.

I would want to see the code of behind the aforementioned community member.

Maybe some trolls are failed attempts?

I think I'd go over all the posts by said program and extract language patterns to see
a: if there were obvious linguistic oddities that were overlooked on the assumption it was human
and
b: ask permission to continue to engage it in dialogue

I have absolutely NO idea who, or what, you're talking about...seriously, I barely know anyone here/any references to pop culture. Please explain the joke.

Some swedish dude made a song about falling in love with a mod-bot on a forum.
He also made a song about playign Dota.

Both were massive hits in scandinavia, and i hated it, cause i can't stand teh dance genre

Though it was extremely fun to hear people singing "we're sitting on ventrillo and playing some DotA" (in sweedish) and not having any idea what it meant.

You can blow the machines cover by going "tits or GTFO" and whemn you're presentet a pair of headlights instead of boobs, you know you've been fooled.

I'm more onto the philosophy side of things. Whether a computer could be considered a person, with AIs pretty much filling the criteria.
just too many people I know that deny them that :(
don't hate on my beautiful machines...

Ah yes, it remind me of my first encounter with an IM bot. Here a fun link for you to test out the AI. Personally I think you would have to be fairly unfamiliar with IM and computers in general to be fooled...

I think I beat the game...

Me:
you are a simple program
God:
Thanks and you are a delightful person too. Yes! You win the Turing Game.

Heh, if you can find any more of them, I love talking to the bots and running them in circles. :p
