I like turn based games, here are just a few examples of great turnbased games:

Xcom
Civ 4
Total war series (ok has a RT element too, but you can pause that)
Europa Universalis III

Yawn... two words: Strategy, Tactics. I'll add another for free: Management.

I love turn-based. Often involves a lot more strategy and careful planning in my experience.

It can be summed up with one word, and several.

One word: Nostalgia

Several words: It's something that's stuck with the series through and through as the primary element to their combat segments. It's a tried and true formula, and people haven't really complained about it overly much, so they don't see a reason to change it. Kingdom Hearts II is so far my favorite, in that it's completely free roaming and up to the player to strategize (even if there isn't much of that at all, admittedly). I suppose to some it might seem dry and dull, but it's got it's own perks. For instance, you can decide on the best strategy for defeating an enemy, of how best to combine your character's abilities for the best outcome, all while not having to worry about your foe's movements while you're theorizing.

In short, turn-based combat is more a numbers game than the free-form combat is a reactionary fighter's specialty. I like to think that I'm a little bit of both.

you don't like turn based combat? CHESS, that is all
As I once argued though, Chess and Turn based RPGs are usually different. Chess is set in stone style, while most if not all RPGs have chance factored in. Does that move do 50 damage, or does it critical this time and KO the enemy? There are no critical hits in chess.

I don't like turn based for most games.

A handheld game? Fine, control with those can be finicky (where the fuck'd the other analog stick go, PSP?) and the ability to render large scale battles is lacking.

On console and non-shitty computer, though, I don't like it, it doesn't seem fun at all.
I agree with you. All the turn based RPG games I love...are gameboy ones (Dragon Warrior, Pokemon, Golden Sun)
But console ones I never like.

Turn based belongs in strategy games, it shouldn't take the place of real time combat IMO for example, chess is many times more tactical then most RTS's, however if we are playing like a Pokemon game or a FF game, it really doesn't belong, I used to like it playing so online MMO's, but then I realized all I was doing was clicking on my most powerful attack then waiting to click it again. As far as I know FF is like this, if someone can confirm me.

I like turn-based combat. I like other styles as well but turn-based is hardly a relic. It is also nice to be able to take a phone call and not worry that you've interrupted "your gaming groove" and are about to get trounced. ;)

Well, unless they canceled it aren't they making a FF13 with a Kingdom Hearts battle style?

At any rate turn based are better for people who want a bit of a slower pace. Active time is good for people wanting faster action. Not everyone wants the same thing from there games.

Valkyria Chronicles is interesting because while its turn based enemies will auto fire on you if you enter there range and you will auto fire on them if they enter your field. This added a unique form of strategy as key areas could be defended. It was fun to put Vise and Wendy behind a sand bag beside a spawn point, stopping the enemy from moving as they would get mutilated, then Running Alicia behind them and pick them off while raining an everlasting supply of grenades on them care of the engineer beside her.

As well aiming was important as head shots would kill an enemy in three hits while body shots could take 15-20.

You and your enemies could also counter attack which was interesting as well if you were smart and took cover generally they can avoid all incoming damage.

Turn based has a place in gaming still. It just might not be your thing.

Turn based games are alright by me where they're tactical, X-COM et al do this right. Fallout 1 and 2 do not. The JRPG 'press X every 5 seconds' system baffles me.

You know, it's really nice when you're in some kind of conflict where you keep getting beat and a change of tactics can change the outcome. In the early Fallouts and JRPGs you have no option but to go away and do something else for a while. Where's the skill in that?

There have been plenty of other successful games with turn based combat.

Motherfucking X-COM!

I wish someone made a worthy successor to the first two. :(
Apocalypse was pretty good, and Interceptor was cool if a little different.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Apocalypse and interceptor were terrible. However if you like X-Com chances are you'll love Jagged Alliance, available at Good Old Games I think all of the games in the series are there, but 2 is the most polished. For an even more updated squad based turn based strategy Silent Storm is pretty good if a little... broken. There are mods available which can get rid of the silly elements if they bother you.

Well FF13 had an ATB or active battle system. It's kind of the same thing they did in FF7. I wish they would have let you control all 3 characters, and instead of just choosing skills for me, let me choose. Personally I don't like Turn-based, because most games aren't challanging enough for me to use anything other then auto-attack or whatever magic spell the monster happens to be weak to. Everybody always talks about strategy, but all I've ever done is hold x or a until the battle ends.

Well, some people like the turn-based combat, as evidenced by the games still being bought. So no, I don't consider it a "stagnant relic that haunts JRPGs". I love the system, but I can see why others don't.

Jagged Alliance 2 has some hilarious glitches/bugs in it. Watching my mate play it one day and he could see an enemy on the other side of a building through the windows, so being a smart arse about it I told him he should use a throwing knife. Two seconds later and we watch the knife fly up over the building and come back down and take the guy out.

What's with everyone thinking turn-based combat is somehow outdated? It's a certain style of gameplay. There is nothing inherently old or outdated about it. As long as there can continue to be tweaks to the formula to make the gameplay a fresh experience (which games like Final Fantasy provide again and again), it's not outdated or too old. Seriously.

Turn-based combat is a lot more accessible than action-based combat. Not everyone has reflexes like a young adult, you know. For instance, my dad likes to play a lot of JRPGs, partly because he simply doesn't have the facilities to work in a fast twitch-based combat like I do.

Moreover, sometimes it's good to sit and think about what you're doing more than deciding on the fly. Such a framework allows for much greater control and has more potential for strategy. (Not that it always delivers - the Final Fantasies are pretty terrible in that regard, for instance.)
