Twitch Bans Streaming of "Adults Only" Games - Update

"Simply put, Adult Only games are not welcome on Twitch."

Update: Twitch has clarified the whole "versions of these games in all territories" statement made in the initial release, as well as how games with multiple ratings will work via the following amendment:

If a game's US version is rated Adults Only by the ESRB, you should not broadcast that game on Twitch. However, ESRB rated Mature versions of Adults Only titles are permitted for streaming, such as Mature versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy.

Games rated 18+ by other rating systems are fine to stream, so long as they are not rated AO by the ESRB, and they don't violate the standard language of our RoC and ToS.

Essentially, this rule change only affects the 26 titles currently given an Adults Only rating by the American Hatred [http://www.esrb.org/ratings/search.jsp?rating=AO&ratingsCriteria=AO].

Original Story: Twitch has just posted an announcement updating its terms of use, with the biggest revision effectively banning an entire rating of games from the service. "Today, we're updating the RoC with regard to Adult Only (AO) games," said a Twitch representative [http://blog.twitch.tv/2015/05/rules-of-conduct-update-adult-oriented-games/]. "Simply put, AO games are not welcome on Twitch."

While this seems pretty clear-cut, Twitch does cause a bit of confusing by stating "our policy extends to versions of these games in all territories. Generally, if the US version is rated for Adults Only (18+) or has an equivalent rating in your territory, you should not broadcast that game on Twitch." The problem here being that in territories such as Australia, ratings discrepancies begin to appear. For instance, Hotline Miami 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139478-Hotline-Miami-2-Banned-in-Australia] received the "refused classification" label in Australia (arguably the equivalent of an "AO" rating) for its intense adult content, whereas in the US, it simply received an "M" rating.

Does this mean that no-one can stream the game? Or just Australians? What if you're an American living in Australia?

For reference, here [http://www.esrb.org/ratings/search.jsp?rating=AO&ratingsCriteria=AO] is the official ESRB list of "Adults Only" games in the US, and thus, the list of games now banned from being streamed on Twitch. Noteable examples include Manhunt 2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

"Previously, we made game-specific decisions about which games would and would not be available for broadcast - sometimes due to overtly sexual content, sometimes due to gratuitous violence. This is unsustainable and unclear, generating only further confusion among Twitch broadcasters," said Twitch, explaining the change.

How do you feel about this change? Personally, I think Twitch streamers who specifically state that their channel contains adult content should be allowed to stream whatever damn game they please.

I assume that this decision was meant to block Hatred streaming, given that the game comes out in 4 days. Still, that the wording clearly also extends to other 18+ ratings outside of the US is shocking, to say the least.

I'm really interested in seeing where this goes. While Twitch is free to have this policy, I think it's damn stupid, as Manhunt 2 and Hatred are not much more violent than any number of M-rated games. Less violent than GTA V or The Punisher, really.

Wasn't this already the case? Like, I thought you couldn't stream Huniepop.

Well, here in Australia, almost anything violent is coming out with an R18+ rating. Watch Dogs, GTA V, even Fable: Anniversary[footnote]Funnily enough, The Lost Chapters is MA15+. [/footnote] are all R here. If equivalent rating means 18+, a lot of games here are going to be unstreamable.

If this decision really came about simply because of Hatred, then that's disgusting; more so then Hatred itself. While I find the premise of the game generally mean-spirited, and I'd never buy or play it myself, it'd be ridiculous for (what is essentially) an LP website to bring in this new rule for one game. It's also problematic in that certain countries that allow Video Games to exist have extremely backwards rating systems (Australia) that would mean several M-Rated games are also on the "no no" list.

Generally, I dislike Censorship, and while I can understand websites not wanting to host Pornography or Violent Material, you can't add this rule when a Majority of the things you host are of Violent Material (Like StarCraft II and Reign of Kings, first things that came to my mind).

Hopefully, Twitch will get rid of this rule and just be more straightforward and say "We don't want to host Hatred". Or, better yet, allow Hatred to be stream-able, because other then the premise, the game is pretty much the same as most Shooters in the modern day.

Am I reading the same rules as the writer? they seem rather clear.

" All games rated Adults Only (AO) by the ESRB are not permitted for broadcast on Twitch. "
http://www.twitch.tv/p/rules-of-conduct

There is no mention of outer rateing systems

They even give you a list of games that you should not play, and it's less then 10.

Couple questions:

Does Twitch only allow streaming of games that have been age rated?

Do they have an outline for acceptable mods?

Oh what a coincidence that this announcement was made mere days before the release of Hatred.

Coincidence indeed.

There had to be a problem with it at some point i guess.

I can think of a few games that are more deserving then SL to be on that list that don't have ESRB rating, but I don't think content creators are stupid enough to stream them.

The source of this article goes to here:

It originally said:

"Generally, if the US version is rated for Adults Only (18+) or has an equivalent rating in your territory, you should not broadcast that game on Twitch."

But they seemed to have just added a clarification:

"Games rated 18+ by other rating systems are fine to stream, so long as they are not rated AO by the ESRB, and they don?t violate the standard language of our RoC and ToS."

Funny how this comes out just a few days before Hatred comes out.

I guess they really don't want it to be shown.

What's even worse than this being a move to block Hatred from being streamed (probably giving a few days of decent traffic to HitBox) is the complete list of games banned from Twitch. Some make sense, then Indigo Prophecy shows up....

This also leaves a giant hole for a bunch of unrated PC titles to be streamed, making this rule nigh useless to some degree.

Yeah, the Hatred devs must just love how their name is plastered all over everything now.

I look forward to the day their bullshit is forgotten in the sands of time.

And so, after update, this was basically confirmed. Man, this Hatred hatred is really out of control!

Internet moral police to the resque! Whatever people might do if they didn't have other telling them what they can watch, play, and read. Would've been a mad, mad world indeed.

Maybe I should get that Hatred thing when it comes out. After all I found Hotline Miami to be fairly enjoyable...

I'm still wholly confused. No game in this day and age can be hosted on any storefront without a rating. Since Twitch has stated that they accept AO ESRB ratings (and similar ratings from other countries respective game rating systems.) shouldn't that mean all AO games are permitted?

I mean, that statement is just a clusterfuck. Or maybe I'm not reading it correctly. Either way, I guess just stay on the safe side and don't stream blatant porn games or something.
