Tax credits for video games? That's some delicious pork barrel spending there, GB. Keep government funding out of your businesses. It's like cooperation with a crime syndicate; once they fund you, they own you.

Heh, Fair point! either way you can just hear the *Dun Dun Dun Dun, Dun Dun Duuuun Dun Duuuun*. Ed Balls could easily go as Emperor Palpatine for Halloween any day.

While games do appear to be on the up-and-up, there is a serious problem with increasing piracy. They might not be the safest bet at the moment. I still think it'd be a sound investment, but we're talking about politicians here - not known for their foresight.[/quote]

Also, good point. But isn't that a problem with any industry? I don't have any figures, but Music especially has been hit hard by piracy in recent years, and that's still going strong. same with film and DVD sales.*

Whilst the piracy issue isn't ideal, I think it can be removed as a common denominator and that video games are still a good investment economically.

*[sup]I think I just answered my own query there[/sup]

Yeah giving out tax breaks to video games when they have just made an 8% cut in defence spending. Giving out a tax break to industry that employees only a few 1000 people at the same time when they are cutting the number of soldiers would be plain stupid. Especially when all UK companies are getting a tax cut to levels below that of Canada.

I think would have been fine, aside from that absurd "britishness" requirement. We'd be seeing Gears of War knockoffs starring John Cleese!

Wait... That would be frikkin' awesome!

Well yeah but they're part of the Shadow Cabinet, which just sounds like haunted furniture.

My personal favourite is Shadow Chancellor. It reminds me of the Sith for some reason.

And given most of them are Labour MPs; there's a grain of truth in that :)

To be honest, I don't think we need to make a distinction about what kind of MPs they are - isn't being a British MP enough to gain you lifetime membership to the Evil League of Evil?

Agreed, I really like how some are stuck in their... to realise that these are hobbies and pass times at most for us. The gaming industry in the UK is a small one. I would rather money go to fixing imigration or support for our armed services myself.

With all the cuts coming to the Universities and gaming industry as well as increasing tuition fees and scrapping of EMA. I get the feeling David Cameron really hates the youth of today. Or just poor people,he is a tory afterall.
They're not scrapping EMA, granted everything else is right and they are screwing over the youth of the country. Just want to make sure the facts are right.

I'm glad that they aren't helping the game industry, if they did then we wouldn't be able to buy all of those aircraft carriers to defend the country from all of those sea attacks we've been having lately. Luckily they also cut funding to the education system so we can start building the space lasers to stop any martians getting in too. I just hope taxes will go up to 1000% so the politicians can have nice clean moats for their duck castles too.

For those mocking the guy for confusing Realtime for Rockstar, The guy who founded Realtime was previously in charge of DMA, the company that made the first two GTAs (& lemmings) which was then bought by Rockstar & turned into Rockstar North. It's an innocent enough mistake, stop being so pissy just because he doesn't think Britain's joke of a games industry should have tax breaks.

So, what you're saying is the Tory government with their lib-dem simpering lapdogs have made an unsound financial decision?

Conservatives who don't have a clue about how the economy works? You mean the same great minds who brought us the idea that if you sack the public sector, the only people with SECURE JOBS, we'll fly out of a recession might actually have flawed views on the economy?

Say it ain't so man, say it ain't so. I can't handle that kind of revelation.

In all fairness, the UK film industry has to compete with Hollywood. Bigger budgets, bigger stars, more cocaine...it's where all the money is, and it's not really much of a surprise that the UK industry is much smaller. The UK gaming industry, however, had the potential to become the video gaming equivalent to Hollywood if we can set things in motion before some other country sets themselves up as the ideal home of game production.
But that's kinda it, the UK was one of the major leaders in gaming, at least back in the early/mid-90s and perhaps a bit earlier.

What's happened is a lot of the bigger IPs or companies have been bought out by US (Or other) firms and the money doesn't stay in this country. If the government put money into UK studios and helped them to bring out titles that could rival the bigger games (Just like Batman: Arkham Asylum) then we'd have more money coming in from those games, perhaps even an amount equal to the funding itself (Or close enough).

More revenue than the UK film industry in 2008? Yeah, not a sure winner...

That's my point, it makes more money than the respected film industry that will never be as big as Hollywood, while games are on track against North America and Japan... well, not now sadly.

Wait, what? A politician who didn't check his facts?! Holy shit, I am now totally disillusioned with the system...
Haha, shocking isn't it?

The US government needs more titles like that.

Yeah, my point was that making more money than the UK film industry isn't particularly impressive. Our film industry is always going to be a very minor player in comparison to Hollywood, so touting our games industry as being bigger than our film industry is something of a hollow boast.

Oh, it is. You get titles like Shadow Defense Minister, which makes them sound as if they're employed to keep us safe from ninjas...
One thing you can say about the British Government - they're brilliant at keeping the ninjas away.

This comes after Cameron announces he wants to introduce the UK to it's greatest level of industry yet (a bold statement when you consider a small thing called the industrial revolution). I knew he wouldn't be the man to do this, mainly because he's a class obsessed fool, but this isn't going to help his claim one bit. When something good can happen to the UK, the people or government ruin it.
