It's funny because I said that as soon as the Conservatives got the majority.

Me said:
Now that the Tory's are in power, we are all going to be slaves to a monkey overlord.
But, surely any experiments with monkeys are unethical?

I would restrain from doing this more from ethical reasons rather than being afraid of intelligent animals staging a coup on their human masters.

If we did this and made animals capable of interacting with us in a human way are they still animals? Are they people? Do they get rights? Should they still be treated as inferior to us?

Moral minefield.
I mean seriously? A scenario like the one outlined in planet of the apes is SOOO unlikely, I cannot even stand to think of that stupid movie. You're honestly telling me that a couple thousand police officers and a few well placed missiles from some planes can't desimate a couple hundred apes?
Please, entertain us all and show me where in my post I said apes would take over the world.

Can you read?

Mmm how about trying to embrace and treat these new humanoid animals hybrid thing with respect and equality? Fear and paranoia is often the way that lead to humanity to their downfall.

It was the "I mean seriously" that caught me off guard :p

I say bring it on. We'll need the beast-people as a distraction from the already looming robot menace and I think it would be for the best if we humans went on our way, terraforming Mars or something, so they can ravage this world.

OK, We probably won't be able to terraform Mars or Luna but beast-people + rouge A.I. would make for a great apocalypse.

I disagree. If we had the power to elevate other species to sentience, it would be immoral not to do so. With our entrenched hold on the world and superior military might, I severely doubt that they could overthrow us. Besides, the apes (or whatever) would probably be thankful to at least some degree for giving them a greater intelligence. Overall, the benefits of such research would outweigh the minor risks.
