I propose a White House Bombardment Switch. It does not activate unless and until the Internet Kill Switch is first activated. A simple majority of active domestic Internet users must flick it to the "ON" position in order to have the White House erased by satellite laser, and must do so within thirty seconds of the Kill Switch Advisory appearing on their screens.

Alternately, we COULD just go with the tried-and-true pitchfork-and-torches response...

I wish they would turn the internet off right now. because then my life would be productive. But in the mean time, back to TV tropes for me...

The entire idea of an internet kill switch is stupid. The kill-switch itself IS the "cyber 9/11" they speak of. Imagine if ALL internet access stopped without notice. People would flip out! You'd have rioting, looting, crazed people locking themselves in bunkers with automatic weapons, and a huge portion of communications within the US would cease completely. Not to mention that the kill switch would probably cause a huge ass global recession by shutting down the operations of a whole lot of companies.

I understand the need for more internet securities, but the internet is not something you just shut-off at a moment's notice. The internet has reached the kind of importance that electricity owns in modern society. Short of having a Sky-Net style incident, this is overkill and will do a shitload more harm than whatever attack it was designed to counter.

Mr. Government,
[/i]You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means[/i]

OT: Is this just for the US? Cus I'm questioning why they would have any right to turn off British internet, considering A) They HAVE no right and B) We technically invented it
This. I can't even put into words how pissed off I am that someone would even CONSIDER trying to passd this bill. I live in Australia, the US have no right to switch off 'the internet'

F*** the US Government

I don't think you CAN shut down the internet. It's not like you can find the internet and unplug it. It's millions of networked computers, programs, and servers.

You may as well go to the beach and try to demolish the sand with a hammer.

from what i saw its only in the US and only if some Die Hard 4 shit happens...my guess is the guy saw that movie and thought...OMFG we cant have that....
It sounds pretty drastic. But i guess if u need to actually use taht kill switch it would mean the US got pretty fucked up....so the economy will suffer anyway.

Well the tech behind it was developed by different NATO countries as a means to communicate and protect data in the event of a nuclear war. Also I would imagine it would only affect US internet accessibility because the US government has no jurisdiction over other nations. Either way it is total bullshit, governments should not be able to have that kind of power.

Lol did anyone else notice the overuse of the word "cyber" also, this is too much, the power to literally stop communication on that level in an entire country shouldn't be entrusted to just one person.

Why are people acting as if by proposing a last resort, temporary security measure, that Lieberman is trying to destroy the internet, and has already succeeded?
I cannot think of a single, solitary reason why the US Government should allowed to wield such power. For ANY amount of time.

The fact that it got proposed in the first place is absurd.

Princess Bride reference. Awesome.
And the "turning off" would amount to individual American carriers shutting off service here in the US. Not pulling the whole plug. A lot of the bill is technically modeled off Chinese censorship strategies

Whaaaaaaaaaat?

This is insane. I cannot think of any event that is even remotely feasible that would require the entire internet to be turned off.
Skynet attack? seriously though, this is just wrong....very wrong
