PRIATE WINS AGAI- Oh...I see, Game pirates. Not the group.

OT: If they broke that one, surely they will make worse DRM?
Yup, and it will only continue to get worse until people realize that if you don't want to pay for something then you shouldn't play it.
Well, EA's Spore had terrible DRM, pirated like mad, and then Sims 3 had much less intrusive DRM, maybe this will be a similar case.

Hah, ain't that the truth. You should have seen how many people in the MW2 Boycott group were playing MW2.

Exactly, we just go around in circles!
"Catch a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach and man to feed a fish, and round and round we go." -Not so ancient proverb.

Also, I don't think it's fair at this point to blame pirates for horrible DRM. Sure the pirates began the process, but Ubisoft and EA took it way out of control. They completely overreacted in a non-useful way: The pirates still get what they want, the consumer gets screwed over. Arkham Asylum did something unique, but clearly that wasn't enough. What we all have to realize is that nothing is enough. There will always be someone clever enough to break your protection. What producers should focus on now, instead of damaging DRM, is producing great games that people will WANT to buy. There will always be pirates, but you can limit their influence with quality.

"Customers will be required to login via infra-red to an Ubisoft access point, located at over 20 major cities around the world!"

Ubisoft is run by morons.

It's 2010, everyone should have DSL or something better, that's like a new standard of living.
Yes, anyone with any aspiration to play single-player video games should definitely move to an area with broadband coverage to support the asinine and fruitless scheme of some small company where the board is obviously a bunch of evolutionary challenged gits wearing their pants on their heads.

Get a globe. Or hell, get a map of your state or even the immediate area and check the broadband coverage. If that doesn't help to sync you up with reality I don't know what will.

But saying Ubi isn't a saint or whatever either and deserve this is like saying we shouldn't help children trapped in wells because they shouldn't have been there in the first place or weren't supposed to.
Um ... what?

Um, good? Ubisoft are essentially screwing customers by selling them a product that won't work for anyone without DSL, and even for THOSE people there have been loads of problems with the DRM itself not working properly.

I'm not saying it's good to pirate, but Ubisoft isn't exactly Mother Theresa here, either. They deserve to have a program cracked which is preventing legit customers from playing a product they purchased. Sure, pirates are taking advantage of this too, but Ubisoft should have known that you cannot create uncrackable DRM.

The stupidest parts of your argument have been bolded for self-reflection.

1. Not everyone lives in America and will have 100% reliable Internet 24/7, and throwing money at this problem will not always fix it. So if you live in Australia or Brazil, it is irrelevant how much money you have, because perfectly reliable Internet may not be available in your area.

2. Your comparison has nothing to do with anything. I fail to see how what you described in any way relates to Ubisoft-an extremely sucessful company aggressively trying to combat illegal copying. There really should be an analogy police. Ubisoft don't want their product copied for free, so they punish paying customers by selling legit consumers a crappy product. Then somebody cracks the stupid DRM that was hurting both customers and pirates (but pirates not as much, since they don't pay money anyway), and you relate this to starving children.

I fail to see how anything you've said in any way refutes my original statement.

Ok where in the US that has a gamestop would NOT have internet? Unless you're in the middle of the mountains or some isolated town then why the hell would you be there to play a single player game and if you lived there how would you know of video games? Tv, satellite tv? DSL? Digital Broadcasting? Sounds like a good bet internet can be acquired. And if you were living there in the first place Shouldn't you be doing other activities that involve outside then that would be more fun for you in that lifestyle? The reality is major cities have coverage (please name me cities in the united states that have a permanent internet blackout) I hope that brings you up to speed with THIS reality.

And with the analogy, I'm basically saying is just because they did something wrong doesn't mean you have to be a twat about it.

Fuck the DRM. I'm not touching Silent Hunter V until they a) patch it until it works, and b) take away the DRM. If neither of these conditions is satisfied then no way. They lost themselves a sale.

Can someone tell me what the hell a DRM is?
DRM is Digital Rights Management, it's basically the security measures that software producers use to stop pirates, or attempt to do so.

OT, this was a failed attempt at something that could have been done well.
The constant requirement for a connection to the server simply caused too many problem. If your router hitched for an instant, you lost back to your last save. If the servers failed, and of course, they took measures to make sure that it would never happen, and then it inevitably did, you were screwed.
The pirates, meanwhile, played their game. No interruptions, and no cost.
Also, the score is now nearly infinity to 3. The number of downloads vs. the number of successful uses of DRM.

And the other guy, I don't understand where you got starving children so your sin is assuming things (yeah we're all guilty but I'm not on a crusade or anything, just talking)

And I've been talking about America (sorry I didn't make that clear but I didn't mention the world either. Obviously you have internet where you live or you wouldn't be reading this) when it comes to internet and yes internet can get shoddy but it doesn't go down FOREVER. There ARE alternatives to entertainment people!

~~

Course my comparison has something to with something and that is we shouldn't be evil because they are evil. Yes I agree paying customers are victims too but you mention crappy product which means you should just not buy it and play it than pirate it which makes you sound like you can pirate it because its bad.

It's funny that they never bothered DRM'ing the console version, even though you can "crack games" for that, to.

I think Ubisoft is no spending some good money on DRM which has been proved useless and detrimental to the customers experience.

I seriously doubt they are going to go much further with this.
You haven't known Ubisoft very long have you?

In any case this was posted long ago by someone so not really new news.
HUH? Been playing Ubisoft games for years actually.

And why the hell has this got to be news? Someone made a thread on an interesting topic which I then replied to.

Bye bye now.

Even if they hadn't cracked this one can you honestly say they would stop developing more and more types of drm?(also this is very old news private torrent sites have had this for over 2 weeks now)

Hell, I would go as far as saying that even a cd key is too much. How many times have you bought a new pc game, installed it, played it for a while, threw it on your cd spindle and then forgot about it, uninstalled the game to make room for the next big game, and finally got back to the game only to realize that you threw away the case and now can't play the game you paid for? I'll just tell you that it sucks.

And on that note, I'll get to the whole 'limited installs' concept. I generally have about 3 or 4 games installed on my pc at any given time. I don't know about you, but every once and a while I have the urge to play torment, or baldurs gate 2, or any number of classic other games that I have installed numerous times depending on my mood. Now I bought each of these games brand new and have EVERY right to do exactly that, install when I want to play them and uninstall them when I need some space. I should not NEED to pay extra for doing exactly what is common sense to do. We are not renting the right to install the game, we are purchasing the game to do exactly what we want with it. If we want to install it on our desktop and our laptop, it's our game so we should be able to do exactly that!

Now I don't pirate games myself, but I'm sure gonna cheer for the pirates for sticking up for gamers rights. That's right, it's our RIGHT to play an offline game without an internet connection. Why should we, as gamers, have to get an inferior product because the publisher wants to remove content to make it harder to pirate? If they refuse to listen to our opinion on this matter, it's only justice that they get hit where it hurts the most. We are their customers and if they don't listen to what we say, they don't deserve to stay in business.

While I'm a moralfag and have issues with piracy, I can't help but be happy. The internet connection required seemed intense, especially on a game with no online features.

Don't try moving the goalpost. We were talking about broadband, not internet in general. There are a lot of regions, even in the US, even in or close to major cities without broadband coverage. And this still implies that we are ignorant, assuming every country with high enough income to afford playing video games also has a coverage equal to the US and Western Europe.

Also, I wasn't aware that you need a Gamestop in close proximity to play or even get video games.
