And make sure you gush about your chosen subject; universities want to know you study outside the curriculum for your subject. Where are you applying to and what for, anyway?
I'm applying for politics and parliamentary studies at Leeds. History and politics at Leeds. History and politics at Nottingham. Military history at salford and History at Teeside.

I think the hardest part is just getting started properly. But my brain refuses to work right now XD
So will you be the one getting mocked by Frankie Boyle and Dara in a few years? :)

Ah, I see why it's a ***** to write. If you have a wide range of subjects, you can't focus on one, or the others will throw you away straight away.
I think it would have been better if they let you write a different personal statement for each uni. I mean yeah it means writing five instead of one, but it would let you focus on each option better
Agreed. I'm trying to get down a mix of History and War Studies degrees, and it's a pain in the bum.

I know many of you UK Escapists like me will be applying for university this year and that means filling out the dreaded UCAS form.
I personally have hit a brick wall with mine. All i need to do is write my personal statement and i'm done but its just so damn hard. And i keep getting distracted by this place and my 360 which isnt helping XD
Others i know are struggling with things like choices too.
So, any of you going through similar problems or went through them when you applied for uni.
And for our friends accross the pond, do you have something similar in the USA. Oh and for those of you who don't know what UCAS is, they basically send your application to the five universities of your choice for you after you have finished it.

Yeah, i really just started this thread to complain. it makes me feel better
Don't worry about it, I went through this about three years ago. The personal statement section is a cakewalk, just don't go on a wild rant and you'll be fine!.

Ha! UCAS is a breeze compared to the Student Finance application. You've got that to look forward to, too.
Oh yeah, it's especially depressing if you are a medical student; six bloody years of finance forms to look forward to. You'd think that by the third year this shit might get amusing...but no.

It doesn't!

zuh?

well, it's like in the fourty year old virgin. you've got to accent your attributes. nobody needs to know you spend an average 3 hours a day watching porn, but they would like to know you play basketball and piano, and are an avid supporter of amnesty international, or whatever you can add. Just try your hardest not to stretch the truth too far.

I'm not finding my personal statement difficult - it involves two of my favourite things; writing and writing about how great I supposedly am - what's wrong with that?

As for course choices - I fully recommend you pick one area and focus on it - not one specific course but one area (say science) and stick to it - it'll help when writing your statement.

I'm completely done with my personal statement, but I'm having trouble picking another two universities because I'm so sick of them making such anal portfolio requirements. It's terrible.

In addition to the UCAS application, I have to complete my Early Decision application for the US, and I have no idea how I'm going to be able to submit it in two weeks.

My friend kept hitting me all last week until I got it done by bribing a teacher with cookies to help me. God bless them both, now I just need to actually decide on my 5 universities and I'm done.

i'm hating it, i just cant focus, the site makes no sense, and i hate writing about myself. + our reference has to be from our form tutors, who we have only been assignes this year, they barely know us, and the reference is a simple re-write of our last report, its fucking rediculous.

I had a really good guide for writing a personal statement that I used when I was doing my first draft last week. Here it is -

http://www.studential.com/guide/write_personal_statement.htm#link_aims

Hopefully that'll help you. Things you really want to stress are communication skills, ability to work with others and responsibility.

I finished my AS...es and then realized I hated A levels. Left 6th form, got an apprentiship and never looked back. Execpt to see friends cause it was down the road and most of my mates repeated a year rather than earn more than thier part time jobs combined. Lucky for me this was just as I was meant to be writing Uni applications...phew.

I remember doing the old UCAS statment. good times. My biggest problem was that I needed to change my choice of subject and re-write my personal statment to match it the day before my school wanted it submitted. This was because I had shitty AS grades and couldnt/wouldnt do the subject I origionally wanted. Blessing in disguise now I look back at it.

I had forgotten you had to do that ha ha. Scottish students will spend about 5/10 minutes on the SAAS website (for me it was atleast), and assuming there's no hiccups, that's their tuition fees payed for the year

Hehe.. One-upmanship here, but...
If you think student finance is a pain to apply for, try applying for post-graduate degrees. Hello 12 page application form including a lovely variety of questions requiring personal statements-like answers..

UCAS brings back memories, albeit not good ones. Call me lazy, and you probably will, but I couldn't be arsed to go to university after college. I just thought 'I don't want to be in education into my 20s' so I finished college when I was 18, and got 2 ICT diplomas out of it. Anyway, I get distracted very easily. For example, I once spent nearly a whole 2-hour lesson playing Tetris online. *starts to play Tetris*

I applied last year and got an offer from all five Unis I applied to.

But the personal statement was a *****...it's so hard to right positive stuff about yourself, even if you play sport, get good grades and shit.
