UFC Fighter Learned "Cool Moves" From Tekken

Well the thing about tekken is that it's surprisingly faithful in its depiction of real-world martial arts. Sometimes I would play around in it and think "hey, I know that move, we've done it in training not however long ago!"

To me the most interesting are Baek's Hwarang-do and Hwoarang's ITF-style traditional taekwon-do (especially since I practice the latter myself). Maybe the impact of the techniques used and the interaction between tekken characters is as detached from reality as they get but the moves themselves are the genuine article. Exagerated at times, sure, and not ALL of them are the real thing but a large portion of them really are.

Hwoarang even does the ITF patterns in his ending animations! what a nice touch.

I think the same can be accomplished with any activity provided that it's realistic and that the observer is familiar with it. This guy was able to learn all those moves because he is a fighter.

Expected this to be about Jon Jones based on the headline - guess he's too big to be making statements like that now :p

The day they get a great boxing or MMA Kinect simulator is the day I buy a Kinect.

To be fair Anderson Silva has at least one knockout via Double Dragon Style lunging elbow. Then again I'm still unconvinced that he's not in fact a fighting game character escape into the real world.

When I read the title I was actually thinking of when Chael Sonnen tried to do that spinning backfist and basically tripped over Silva.

And come on, you know there are people that started martial arts solely because of Eddie Gordo.

Good thing he didn't try to copy Yoshimitsu. Imagine headlines "Fighter stabs himself to death on a ring"

Awesome, I've always liked Tekken the best out of all the fighting games I've played. Next time I'm getting mugged I'll just summon crystals from the ground like a cheap *****.

Alright here's how it is. with the shit that Silva pulls off in the ring and his ridiculous win-loss ratio I think you know in your heart of hearts that everyones favourite undefeatable superpowered UFC fighter is in fact not human, or from this planet. In fact if this universe was just part of a video game he would have batman level plot armour, that's how ridiculous it gets with what he does (Like the match against person I can't remember, he was getting the shit beaten out of him for all the rounds, almpst at the end of the final round he managed to turn the other guys grapple on him and pin him to the floor and make him tap out.)

You mean the first Chael Sonnen fight?

I knew somethign was up with him as soon as that Chris Leben fight went down the way it did. Say all the legitimate bad things you want about the man he's got a jaw like a tank and Silva just demolished instantly without a hint of effort.

Yeah that was probably it, also the Chris Leben fight. Don't even go there, Silva seems to have some kind of time distortion around his limbs that severely cripple our perception of how fast he's going so what we see as a kick with 100 N of force is actually a kick with 1000 N of force. Mark my words some day Silva is going to get into a bar fight because someone claims he's an alien and will accidently king hit the guy by slapping him.

I have a friend that pulled off a Lightning Screw Uppercut in a karate fight, and because he hit his opponent in the chest with it it was allowed.

For reference:

As someone who has practiced/taught martial arts in the past, I appreciate fighting games that feel more authentic. You're not fighting, you're twiddling your thumbs, but some of them actually capture the shell of combat better than others. I played a lot of Tekken, but disliked the way that Marshall Law was represented, especially in Tekken 5 where he's a big joke. All the flip kicking works in a game, but that is not JKD at all.

I preferred Jann Lee's rendition of JKD in the DoA games.

Aside from mimicking Hwoarang's kicking katas just for practice and stretching purposes (I'd never put my leg up that high in a fight. Too much training in Wing Chun, I guess.), I never really tried lifting things from video games.

A friend of mine used to joke that I had photographic reflexes though, because I was a complete terror to spar with immediately after watching Jet Li movies.

Absorb what is useful, disregard the rest - even from fighting games, apparently. If it works for the guy, more power to him.

Praises guy who was inspired by violent video games.

OT: I guess that's cool? Sounds more like trying to encite his fanbase to me though.
Actually, that does raise an interesting question. Does MMA and other such sports encourage violence in society? Might be interesting to see the results of a study on that

Yep, that was exactly how the first fight with Chael Sonnen went down. I remember watching that and thinking he was really, really lucky to get away with the win. FWIW they had a rematch last year and Silva beat Sonnen convincingly. Also after their first match Sonnen returned a performance-enhancing drug sample that was murky at best, and it turned out that Silva had taken the fight with a cracked rib.

You know a MMA style that capitalize of downs vs juggles will be an interesting character. Aka you snap limbs while they are down and attempt a submission move which deals additional damage based of missing health.

I would be impressed if he was able to levitate by crossing his legs, sitting and spinning really fast from some unknown force.

But yeah, stabbing oneself might be a bit extreme. If you connected with that move wouldn't it take off about 50% of the max health bar?
