Honestly, shut the fuck up people (the guys in that "movement", not Tom, obviously).

It's all the same nonsense. It should never matter for any government functions whether people have any religion at all, so the fact that it's included in a census is rubbish anyways.

Personally I say go for the high score guys. 50% Jedi or bust.

Pastafarians or Adeptus Astartes also acceptable.
FOR THE GOD EMPEROR OF MANKIND!

But seriously, if people are serious about it, let em do it. Of course there will be the jokesters, but those people can go with the amount of people who choose Christian but don't have a Christian bone in their body, or those who choose Atheist just because they want to seem smarter, or the people who choose Satanist just because they're going through a rebellious phase.

In other words. It's not hurting anything. Don't be a prick.

PS: Jango Fett saved Attack of the Clones for me.

While I almost get where the group is coming from, all in all, this is more then just a little stupid. I mean, I understand people saying "No, it isn't." to people who say Jedi is their religion but making it into a full blown movement like this is not the appropriote course of action.

I don't see why religion matters to the government. It's pretty funny that A) people can troll their government so hard and B) other people get so upset over it.

Why do they even need to know? They have no reason to care.
I'm still fucking putting Jedi.
/facepalm

read the article again, also read this:

"The data gathered is used to inform government policy, and was used by the last government to justify funding of religious community bodies over secular ones. For example, 2001 census data has been used repeatedly to justify an increase in the number of state maintained faith schools and the increasing level of government money spent on faith organisations.

By ticking 'No Religion', you will ensure that the Government receives an unambiguous message about the number of non-religious people in the UK. Any other response may be manipulated into a response in favour of religion and publically funded religious organisations."

I really have no problem with those claiming to be Jedi and I'm an atheist. As long as they're not forcing religion down the throats of passers-by, blowing up buildings in a suicide bid or molesting children, then it's perfectly fine. Let the Jedi be for now.

Atheists are quickly becoming the most annoying force in society and politics. If people want to put Jedi let them. The translation is that the atheists want the jedis to put non-religious because it will increase their politic power in society. Seriously, if I had to elect a Jedi or an Atheist, I'd choose Jedi, because Obi-wan can kick the crap out of Richard Dawkins.

People might think this is silly, but where do you think statistics that politicians spout come from? If 50% of people put Jedi for arguments sake, then that means that the UK has a population of religious people, which means a certain amount of yours and my money gets given to whatever religious cause makes the most noise for it, which will certainly be the organised ones already balls deep in the system.
So if 50% of people put Hindu, the government might start building synagogues?

Where did this idea that any religion=every religion come from?

When I read the title my first reaction was that there were atheists out actively trying to like, hunt down and eliminate people calling themselves Jedi. It was pretty mind-boggling.

While I sympathize with the atheists trying to get some solidarity, I disagree with their argument that the "Jedi" should drop the charade if they're not seriously devout.

Hardly anyone in the first world who claims to be religious takes their religion 100% full-on seriously. For most people, religion is just a way to feel good about yourself, stay close to family, and feel like you're on a winning team. If you think about it too much, you realize that this is big shit, the meaning of life and death, and if you're serious about it, you'd better reshape your life around it, because freakin' *GOD*, man.

It's very hard to live like that, so people compromise. Go to church when you have to, do the routine, get filled up on holy spirits, and then go back to guzzling beer and ogling swimsuit models. Next week, maybe you feel a little guilty, but don't worry about it too much. Just rinse and repeat.

...aaaaand, that's totally OK by me. If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad (to quote a terrible song from my youth). So why so serious, atheists? Jedi are just doing what everyone else is doing. Heck, there may even be a few of them who really believe. The basic tenets of Jediism are the usual "be good, help people, pray/meditate" stuff that all religions have, and with some rudimentary sleight-of-mind you could rationalize the whole "but-it's-from-a-George-Lucas-movie!" thing. God knows we've made excuses for weirder stuff in the past.

Well, great job spinning this story as big nasty Atheists wanting to ruin everyone's fun. It's really more that they're asking people to take the democratic process seriously, in the interest of accuracy. Is that some kind of outrageous offense?

If you want to profess a joke-religion, do it on Facebook like a regular person. Don't mislead the government into promoting religiously-biased policy. Just because you think a census is dumb doesn't mean it doesn't have an impact.

With you on this one. Fuck off government, I am not going to be remotely serious or answer your questions accurately. No trust, no incentive to cooperate.

How about "I for one support our alien overlords".

"If your religion is of low enough importance to you to that you are willing to put in a religion from 3 good sci-fi films from years ago, and 3 more recent rubbish ones, please consider ticking 'No Religion' instead," the campaign writes. "By ticking 'No Religion', you will ensure that the Government receives an unambiguous message about the number of non-religious people in the UK."

To hell with you, "You're Not a Jedi" campaign runners! You take one of the most successful and critically acclaimed franchises in history and brand it as a couple good movies and some more shoddy ones?

No sir, I disagree. It is clear that these people were not loved enough as children, and I hope they grow warts and various other ugly nasty facial blemishes and spend the rest of their days watching truly shoddy sci-fi movies [http://roflrazzi.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/61bc0ce5-13e2-459d-9fbe-ecefd1a87dae.jpg].

... What?

... No, really. What?

The Jedi's of the UK are under attack... from the ATHEISTS?

Huh. Over here, it's usually it's the Christian/Catholic groups that are behind this.

Anyway, my opinion: If Jedi is your religion, more power to ya. If you just say it as a joke, it's not funny. And it hasn't been funny for the last several years or so.

I'm an atheist who's like "Religion? No thanks. But you, have fun with that."

These guys give atheists like me a bad name.
