faith. lol. what is that good for? faith doesnt distinguish between one religion or another. it doesnt do anything to differentiate truth from bullshit. if you genuinely care whether or not your beliefs are true, faith is something to be avoided.

"Faith means not wanting to know what is true."
? Friedrich Nietzsche

"Faith is believing what you know ain't so."
? Mark Twain

"Faith is a cop-out. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can't be taken on its own merits."
?Dan Barker

etc. etc.....
It makes me a better person. Isnt that good?
if you are sure you can live with not caring if your beliefs are true, and are sure it makes you a better person, then by all means continue to believe it. but dont pretend faith is a good reason to believe something or that it makes it true (not that you are, but most religious people do)

but i cannot conceive of how believing in an invisible sky daddy can make someone a better person. atheist are typically better educated, less likely to go to jail, happier, less likely to be divorced etc. just contrast sweden (where almost nobody believes in god) with mexico (where everyone everyone believes in god). theres a direct positive correlation between religiosity and corruption, and with irreligosity and societal success.

personally, the thought of an invisible man watching me poop would get me down after a while :( and i would probably feel depressed knowing my atheist relatives are going to burn in hell while i frolic on clouds.

EDIT: i just thought about this again. how can believing in something make you a better person when you know the belief is not justified and is in all likelihood, bullshit? isnt that tantamount to admitting that your well-being as a person depends on and thrives on absurdities?
Whats for sure is your lack of faith is disturbing :D
i.e. you are jelly and mad because you have spent your life collecting retarded superstitions for which there is no evidential justification and you are now butthurt at me because im glad my parents didnt brainwash me into not caring about or undersanding the difference between evidence and non-evidence (faith).
OMG! Youre right!!! What have I done?!

Cmon! Now youre serving me oppurtunities to use these! :D
i like how youre pretending i didnt understand so you can explain it to me instead of addressing what i said.
In other words... what youre saying is:

Are you doing this on purpose?! This is just too easy! :D
only if you think the term "red herring" is synonymous with trap.
Our whole quarrel was about atheists not having a sense of humour. If youre gonna drag in fancy debating terms, behold; You dragging faith into our real quarrel (from a reply I made to another person while we were discussing the lack of sense of humour in certain atheists), makes you the true user of the "red herring" in this hilarious skirmish :D Then again, having seen your spiteful and serious answers to my silly and quirky statements just proves my initial statement :D

Ofc, you will deny this *waves hand in slow motion*
or we can tell it as it is. you made sweeping generalisations, i rebuked them, you said "uhhh well i have faith". i told you faith was useless. you abandoned your posts without rebutting my arguments or admitting you are wrong. you lurked and started to mask your weak ripostes as jokes so you could just say "hurr i was joking lighten up".

EDIT: probation lifted :)

For that matter since Jedi is more a philosophy than a faith Taoist and Buddhist shouldn't be able to identify either. Actually come to think of it there are a lot of "religion"s/faiths that wouldn't be allowed. I say to each their own. If that's what you believe then go ahead and write it in.

So the people who have no religious tie-downs want to destroy the most awesome use of religion ever? To me this is a conflict of interest...

im not familiar with the probation system and what it entails, but im guessing that i could be banned. so essentially im being banned for criticising religion. this is the 21st century and im being reprimanded for criticising religion. have we not learned from our mistakes? what the enlightenment taught us? thats why im sad :(

and i dont see how religion is supposed to be respected if it cant be honestly criticised? how is it respect if it is mandatory? in the same way donating to charity is not benevolence if it is mandatory, its tax.

surely if im being honest about religion and regarding it on its own terms and merits, im the one thats respecting it? rather than hiding it away from the outside world like an embarrassing relative?
Duuuude... You're seriously taking this thing... seriously? You're even acknowledging Jedi as a real religion? Really?

I can really see why you'd yell fuck the Pope or stone an imam to death for a change, but, what the hell has master Yoda got to do with freeing the world from religion?
what made you think im acknowledging jedi as a real religion? i cannot find one single allusion.

maybe you didnt read anything i wrote?

the only thing im taking seriously is that ive been officially rebuked by a moderator for criticising religion/faith and am being threatened with censorship. thats quite serious business.
...yeah. Serious indeed.

If you're an atheist you should realize that being MILITANT about it only hurts atheists world-wide. You're just as annoying as jehova's witnesses knocking on your door, or your granny goin' on about jesus's save files.

I've noticed some interesting stuff:

"Faith/religion is an abomination". An abomination... sounds kinda what most faithful say about homosexuality and other sins =))

Even your "Oh noes, censorship, hssss" reminds me of someone bitching about being persecuted for their beliefs...

Let me put it this way: this sort of crap makes atheists look just as friendly and open minded as an islamic extremist. The extremist threatens to kill you if you crack one about mohammad, the militant atheist... well, gets really pissed off and opinionated if you make fun of him and put "atheist" in the same sentence.

That's it. I'm renouncing my faith. From now on I'm a Sith extremist.

We have now achieved Gowin's Rule everyone. This forum is now like Nazi Germany.

The way you structured your post was ad hominem whether you meant it or not. You insulted me in that post, and by doing that you implied that anyone who agreed me was lacking in intellignece. You were therefore attempting to undermine my argument through insults.

And as it turns out, you have no 'rights' on this website. You have whatever freedoms the Escapist kindly extends to you, since this is technically a private forum. The minimum requirements to enter may be very low, but the Escapist owners reserve the right to remove you or whatever privileges you have. In this case they are apparently worried about having someone here who will insult people they disagree with.
well im waiting.... what arguments of yours did i neglect to address in favour of the ad hominem you speak of?

saying "this is how you are wrong, well that was stupid" is not the same as saying "you are stupid, therefore wrong".

and thats if i even grant that i said you were stupid, which i vehemently deny.

I'm pretty sure you telling him "faith was useless" is answering my whole you forcing your views on others. That and also stating how agnostics who are truly 50:50 (kinda like me) are cowards. I can take that to the face and deal with it but even the most delusional man must be able to see there is some offense to be taken there.

Also this:

I'll set it out clearly for you:

1) You implied I was weak minded, specifically through the use of the phrase "durrrrrrrrrr" and other patronising language.
2) You are therefore implying that people who agree with me are stupid, or not thinking properly about the discussion.
3) You are therefore undermining my argument through insults.

Of course, mere patronising language isn't exactly a severe offence, hence you only gettin a one day probation which has no in fact been revoked. Which makes your arguments over censorship seem a bit exaggerated.

Also, if you're looking for arguments of mine that you've ignored, try this post which you have yet to react to and should bring us back to our original discussion:

Caught you.

Its generally a bad idea to announce BOS membership. Announcing that is akin to announcing your in the Enclave, who are also enemies of NCR. Factions, not religions. The west coast BOS does however have a big church with plasma screens. That reminds me, I shall put down "Hubologist" in the census when it comes around. If anyone knows what a Hubologist is, they get a cookie.
i was actually targeting something more like this:

Hubology aka parody for Scientology, it's well explained in the Fallout Bible, search in forums of nma-fallout.com...

Meh, still made me laugh out loud (literally) and I instantly respect anyone who can do that...a lack of humour is soul destroying...

Speaking of which, can we start a religion based around humour? I know there's that yoga excercise thing where they laugh for an hour every morning but I would seriously love a religion that's just based on making people happy instead of following rules...it would be a refreshing change that's for sure...

i can demonstrate explicitly that faith is useless. theres no question about it.

most number of religions that can possibly be true = 1

number of religions = over 9000

not really, i offered the insult only with the belief that you were not 50:50, and i still believe you are not 50:50.

thats like if i was to say "if you think 1+1=3", youre a moron. its a conditional that depends on the condition not being fulfilled.

i dont think ive been clear enough, however, in explaining why you are not 50:50

heres an example to convey what im trying to explain to you, are you 50:50 with respect to russells teapot?

or if i invent a god right now, right this second, and tell you about it. are you 50:50?

if i have explained what i mean well enough, you will now see that to be 50:50 about any supernatural claim is literally impossible, and that not a single person on earth is 50:50 about any possible supernatural claim.
