agreed, but Nick Clegg is even worse. he has sold his soul, dropped everything he stood for just for power. he is a massive prick.
It's a shame I really wanted Nick Clegg in power (hahaha... lib dems winning) but I was hoping he would side with labour. Now he's sided with Torys and the country's about to be fucked up even worse than under Labours rule (which I still stand by wasn't that bad).
my thoughts exactly. Gordon Brown was tidying up after Blair and he needed a chance. Labour would have pulled us through it. also, i live in sunderland, so my area is one of the hardest hit by the tories. my lecturers were even on strike yesterday because of them.

The whole country should go on strike... get Nick Clegg to back out and swap to Labour or something. At least in full time education I'm relatively immune for the next 2 or so years.

I'll be starting Uni in 1-2 years >.> Feck. I say we start with gamers and then incite chav rage by saying they're banning N-Dubz or something. Then we sit back and watch the fireworks.

Least he's better then Brown. :p
I wish we could make better games...
Brown was useless... but David Cameron hates poor people. Honestly in my own opinion Brown > Cameron.

He ment GB as Great Britain.

No, i don't think he did. Firstly, he doesn't have his country listed in his profile, so you don't know if he is american, and i doubt an american would even care about VAT

I checked it out before i started talking with you to ensure i was being accurate. Also, if you take in his first post in this thread, you can see he says tat he will be affected by the public sector pay freeze as he is a teacher.

Incorrect. Great Britain can't feck up Great Britain. Context, people! This is a tread about UK politics and UK's economy. The oil spill has little relevance on if Osborne raised or lowered taxes.

Anyway, I'll start by quoting Cliffski[footnote]Cliff Harris, also known as the one-man indie studio Positech Games [http://www.positech.co.uk/][/footnote] from the RPS comments thread on this issue [http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/06/22/uk-tax-relief-for-game-developers-scrapped/#more-32457].
Cliffski said:
I have to totally disagree with the ?industry consensus? on this one.
I am overjoyed that the chancellor has decided to cut the small companies corporation rate tax, instead of this video game industry subsidy. And I say that as someone running a video game company in the UK.

The propsoed tax benefit was for companeis that passed a ?cultural test?. Do you think that Rockstar North making their games set in New York would qualify? Nope. Explain to me how Fable III is culturally british. Explain to me how ANY game is culturally british.
Plus, it would have been an admin and bureaucratic nightmare. I recently applied to do a game for schools based on a government grant, and got immediately disregraded by the bureaucrats based on a single form (filled out by a family member who makes such proposals for a living, so done properly..), despite having masses of experience doign exactly what they were after. The bureaucrats do not want to supprot small indie companies, they care only for huge companies that will invite them to plush offices and take them to lunch on expenses.

I don?t have a whole department of accountants and lawyers to fill out forms to claim government subsidies and the chances of me or any other indie getting any is zero.

But?

The reduction in corporation tax rates benefits me easily, simply, without lifting a finger. And it applies to ALL UK games companies, not just ones good with paperwork and schmoozing. Plus not an additional tax penny will be wasted on administration.

By far the better choice imho.
And he has a point. Can you name any "culturally British" games? Sure, Time Gentlemen Please would qualify, but Zombie Cow is a two man studio, so his "better for indies" argument applies.

On the general recession issue, I'm going to carry on blaming Gordon Brown for leaving the UK's trousers down, although I will admit that Alistar Darling deserves more credit.

But surely both would have been better? I doubt he would be saying the same thing if he was at the head of one of the major game companies here.
Its good that as an indie developer he is getting the small companies corporations tax relief, but at the same time, it would have been better for the big guys to get the 20% tax break as well. It would have attracted more dev companies, created greater levels of employment and could have reduced key areas reliance on public money.

He meant gordan brown. Was brown such a insignificant figure that most british people can't remember him a year later? If so, that is pretty funny.

Ultimately, had Labour remained in power, I doubt they wouldn't have also scrapped this tax break. It's also small fry compared to some of the other measures announced, such as a approximately 25% cut in the budgets of all government departments, except for health and defence.
