Wardens apparently discovered inmates using the system to talk to their friends, and while they may have been harmlessly chatting about the latest happenings in local sports or whether the Natal is better than the PlayStation Wand or who their favorite Twilight character is, that doesn't matter. "PlayStation 3 consoles are barred on the grounds that they have the capability to send and receive radio signals as an integral part of the equipment," a prison official told The Guardian.
I guess they are also trying to prevent them from escaping mentally from the boredom of prison life?

For some reason when i first read the title i picture inmates riding PS3s to freedom...dont ask why.

Also, i hear the lakers are champions...
I have no problem with inmates getting videogame consoles...better for them to be letting off steam in a game than on each other.

Also, ssh. The Finals never happened.

The fact they are allowed to have PS3 is laughable to begin with.

Didn't see Morgan Freeman playing one in Shawshank Redemption thus it should be destroyed.

Why's it laughable? They have to do something, they can't just sit facing a wall for 50 years.

My thoughts exactly.

Why the fuck do convicted felons have anything more than a cot, the clothes on their back, and access to a poorly supplied library?
To stop them from going insane and becoming more violent then they were before.

If they must give inmates consoles, why can't they give them Wiis so that they will have to exercise to use them?

Here in Ireland our prisoners, for raping and murdering, are awarded with a TV and a Playstation in their cell, along with soft-porn along the wall of their cell and three course meals, when holiday comes up they get holiday meals with dessert.
I wonder what it is for stealing a pack of gum...

Money maybe?

Why can't they simply not give the password to the inmates so they can't link the bloody Wi-Fi connection in the first place, it's not like you need the internet for playing a single player PS3 game. But I will agree that they have a good reason to ban the console, but why can't the simplest solution be applied before having to ban a PS3 entirely, next they will be saying that the Wii is evil because it can send crudly hand-drawn pictures over Wi-Fi or that the 360 is just as bad as the PS3 because they can earn achievements for a performing a slightly violent action in a video game.

PS3 also gets achievements. Just thought I'd point that out XD

If you ask me they shouldnt have PS3's in the first place.

Not stereotyping but alot of criminals are rather poor and wouldnt have access to that stuff normaly, after raping muderering and then raping again a teenage girl surely people shouldnt be privlaged with that stuff...

wouldnt it just be simpler to put a WEP key on the wi-fi point, instead of searching every cell for a ps3?

Inmates don't deserve anything; they are criminals and should be treated worse than the majority of humanity, instead of better.

Sounds a bit too good for them if you ask me. Nothing, in a room barely big enough to stand in or lie down in with no windows or a toilet seems more adequate. Or a bullet to the face.

I'm guessing no one here's ever worked in a prison.

This is not the 1950s. People who work in the penal system are fully aware that rehabilitation is virtually impossible. The point of prisons is CONTAINMENT first, punishment second.

Prison sucks. A lot. There's the lack of individual expression, the lack of drugs, the occasionally getting raped, and the beatings from both fellow inmates and guards. On top of all that, there's the boredom. If you have nothing to do, pretty soon you start inventing mental stimulation. As anyone who's gone stir-crazy knows, the shenanigans can get out of hand. Especially when one of the suggestions for what to do to alleviate this boredom include beating fellow inmates and participating in another obnoxious, myopic activities.

Television and other forms of entertainment, like video games should be in prisons so that the inmates have something to do besides prey on each other and get preyed upon. If they're busy thinking about their performance in the next FIFA 09 tournament, they're not thinking about bring tort after frivolous tort to gum up their municipality's legal system, or asserting dominance over one another with puerile shows of force.

Now, I don't think that the most cutting edge systems are necessary to keep the inmates happy, but I do very strongly feel that there should be video games, as well as other forms of entertainment available to the prisoners so that they don't associate violence and rape with 'fun.'

More on topic, though, I find it amusing in a sick, sad way that this problem could have been solved with a 15-minute phone call to Sony Europe's customer service, but hey, there's no IQ test to work in the penal system.
