I assumed from the thread title inmates had been using PS3s as weapons to hit guards and make their escape, this is far less action packed and interesting.

I'm guessing no one here's ever worked in a prison.

This is not the 1950s. People who work in the penal system are fully aware that rehabilitation is virtually impossible. The point of prisons is CONTAINMENT first, punishment second.

Prison sucks. A lot. There's the lack of individual expression, the lack of drugs, the occasionally getting raped, and the beatings from both fellow inmates and guards. On top of all that, there's the boredom. If you have nothing to do, pretty soon you start inventing mental stimulation. As anyone who's gone stir-crazy knows, the shenanigans can get out of hand. Especially when one of the suggestions for what to do to alleviate this boredom include beating fellow inmates and participating in another obnoxious, myopic activities.

Television and other forms of entertainment, like video games should be in prisons so that the inmates have something to do besides prey on each other and get preyed upon. If they're busy thinking about their performance in the next FIFA 09 tournament, they're not thinking about bring tort after frivolous tort to gum up their municipality's legal system, or asserting dominance over one another with puerile shows of force.

Now, I don't think that the most cutting edge systems are necessary to keep the inmates happy, but I do very strongly feel that there should be video games, as well as other forms of entertainment available to the prisoners so that they don't associate violence and rape with 'fun.'

More on topic, though, I find it amusing in a sick, sad way that this problem could have been solved with a 15-minute phone call to Sony Europe's customer service, but hey, there's no IQ test to work in the penal system.
THANKYOU! I was about to e-rage about the total ignorance and lack of knowledge here, but you said it much more articulately than I could. *applause* Oh, and I completely agree, obviously.

Just adding on though, why are you all assuming that all the inmates are guilty of rape and murder? Yes, a lot of them will be, but what about financial crimes? Where, more likely than not, you'll get a longer sentence than killing someone. Let's look at that Baby P case, the mother got 5(?) years and the step father got a little bit more, for beating and torturing a baby to death. Lovely. Then, in the same news broadcast, this man got - what was it? - 2 life sentences for benefit fraud or some shit to do with money. Yay justice. You can see this sort of thing happening all the time.

Because the state finds theft of money from the state far more offensive than just torturing and murdering infants.

You'll see it time and time again, petty fraud and theft getting more jail time than sexual assault and violence.

Unless of course it's huge fraud and theft in the range of millions, then they tend to get a knighthood or a place in the House of Lords.

(has to hold back the urge to say 'my name's Ben Elton, goodnight!')

I'm in the middle here I think tho.

Offer them basic entertainment facilities, but not PS3's etc. Then strip them away when they step out of line.

On top of entertainment however, there ought to be education, vocational training etc on offer, maybe with time knocked off for inmates who are obviously trying to improve themselves and behaving.

That or supply them all with WOW, they'll just line up like zombies and no more rioting , violence, etc.

Why do prisoners get consoles at all? Surely they deserve nothing?
Exactly.
Give 'em books. Probably better for rehabilitation that a media format that more often than not centres around firearms.

Depends on the crime i guess.
Surely if they don't have the right to be in public they shouldn't have the use of entertainment usually limited to middle class families who can actually afford it....

And, our tax money buys these people games consoles? Yeah, makes sense....

There's a certain trade off on this, I think some of these people are more upset that it's a PS3 vs. say, an N64. A bit exaggerated but you see my point that they don't need the latest and greatest equipment there is.

It's one thing to have a TV in a prison rec room for news and videogames, it's another if its a 42 plasma with 7.1 surround sound and force-feedback chairs. (Again, exaggeration to show my point.)

The best thing for those inmates is (if they still had a PS3) to have copies of Mobile Suit Gundam Crossfire,Genji days of the blade, and untold legends dark kingdom

My thoughts exactly.

Why the fuck do convicted felons have anything more than a cot, the clothes on their back, and access to a poorly supplied library?
I didn't know convicts were in Angus College of Arbroath. :B

its prison not video game camp.

Good behavior or not they are in prison for a reason and they should be treated like they are prisoners.

Sounds a bit too good for them if you ask me. Nothing, in a room barely big enough to stand in or lie down in with no windows or a toilet seems more adequate. Or a bullet to the face.
Nah. Some of them are in for crimes of desperation, and/or relatively minor crimes. These people get the cot and the library and that kind of minor nicety.

As the sentence escalates, so does the level of isolation and "bareness" of their quarters, until it's a plain white room with no contents but the criminal and the clothes they're wearing.

Gives things a nice scalability for times that such is necessary.

the only thing worse than the worst blame ever created is not being able to PLAY the worst game ever created

I'd wager the sports and Guitar Hero games are probably more popular in the joint. Lowest common denominator and all that.

I don't think of it as "buying inmates video games." I think of it as "enhancing the guards' ability to go home without multiple stab wounds."
