See, they've already blown it by admitting they have no problem with killing people off. By saying that, fans will now be expecting it--even disappointed if it DOESN'T happen. Only two games have ever handled death well. And by well, I mean shocking, tragic, and a real sense of loss. Something that made me go, "No. Not him/her. That's...that's not fair."
Anyone who's played the Brothers is Arms series knows that there are several deaths throughout the series. The death of two characters is particularly hard to take.
The other is Aeris. I know it's cliche and most people disagree, but when that first happened, it floored everyone.
Halo: Reach gets an honorable mention for Kat's death--literally came out of nowhere, wasn't expecting it like the others--but since we know they were doomed from the start, it doesn't qualify.
