Frank Zappa. The only thing that most people I talk to know him for is his anti-putting-warning-labels-on-music speech. Most people don't even know that he makes music!

Bathory, the fathers of both Black and Viking metal, yet no-one seems to have heard of them, great shame.
I've heard of bathory, but haven't listened to them. I prefer Mayhem's style of black metal.

On topic:
The band Death. Good old chuck invented death metal and yet barely anyone knows about him. Death never tried to be brutal but be actually good at death metal.

RIP Chuck
... They're the best-selling death metal band of all time. How is that underrated?

tool is great, lateralus is a classic album for sure. But i personally believe the greatest progressive rock/metal band is porcupine tree. Steven Wilson, the singer, songwriter, lead guitarist, and producer is insanely talented. He actually produced three of Opeth's albums, Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation.

If you can spare 5 minutes, i seriously recommend checking out this live video, shows alot of their different styles in one song.

Very nice! Totally new to me, and totally great.

YES.
(Though I'll admit to only having listened to Kezia; it's just such a nice album once you get into it.)

Personally, I'd like to see more of Rainmarket [http://www.rain-market.com/]. They released a good album called September recently, but I'd love to hear more along the lines of the more prog-esque "Interwoven Lullabies" (available free on their site - check it out).

Travis...fucking...barker.

This is going to start a flame war as millions of people call me a fanboy and call him 'overrated' that's not true.
There are so many twats out there who call him one of the most overrated drummers in history. That's utter bullshit.
Just listen to Enema of the state, start to finish, focus on what the drums are doing, and it'll blow your fucking mind.

Samuel Barber - have a look for Barber's Adagio; chances are you've heard it somewhere, and you may know him, but no-one ever seems to when I mention him. =) He was a classical composer of the early 20th century =)

Im pretty sure Cannibal Corpse is the best selling Death metal band ever. Also that the fact that people have asked me if I listen to C.C. I reply with "Not really I prefer Death," then people will say "What the hell is Death?"

Recently I've come across a band named They Might Be Giants. Some of their songs make no sense at first, but when studied closely reveal very thoughtful messages. My favorite song of theirs atm is "I'm Impressed" which is about dictatorship and being an officer under the dictator.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot about my two other favorite bands, JoCo/Paul and Storm.

I don't know if they are underrated but most people today don't know who they are:

- Buckethead
- MAB
- Malmsteen
and Alexi Laiho (he's in a rather popular band but a lot of people don't know how fast he can play)

Wintersun, I say them in every single thread like this. They are great, one of the best Metal bands I have ever heard.

Please listen to both songs if you have the time.

Jonathan Coulton, anybody?
I like a lot of his songs and I'll sing along in the car, but he's too much of a novelty act for me to recommend to other people. It's the sort of thing you need to stumble on and look up. He's hard to sell.

I'd say that Tom Waits is underrated in general, most people write him off simply because he has a voice that's hard to listen to at first. His music's great
TOO RIGHT. There are two kinds of people in the world, those who've heard of Tom Waits, and those who haven't. The guy's been turning out classics for nearly 40 years. He's a great pianist and a brilliant lyricist. He's been covered by the Eagles, the Ramones, Bruce Springsteen, and Rod Stewart. He wrote a song for one of Johnny Cash's last albums. He did vocals for two Primus songs. He's won two Grammys. AND I'VE NEVER MET ANYONE WHO'S HEARD OF HIM!

From Wikipedia:

"Cannibal Corpse reached over one-million in record sales worldwide in 2003,[1] including 558,929 in the United States, making them the top-selling death metal band of all time."

"As of 2008, Death have sold over 1.5 million albums worldwide, with 368,184 copies sold in the US alone (excluding sales before the SoundScan era) making them one of the top-selling death metal bands."

(I can also see Amon Amarth and Dethklok giving them competition, but I didn't see any quick sales information and didn't feel like an in-depth search for it).

So, I guess you were right. Still, over 1.5 million album sales is not 'underrated', especially for death metal. Definitely up there.

And let's get this right, folks. Death didn't invent death metal, they popularized it. Possessed's Seven Churches was the first death metal album released, for example. A real metalhead would know that.

(Not really, now I'm just teasing.)

i would say Ex-Deo, they do roman themed metal and are very new having only released an album, but they really are great and deserve so much more attention and love

can we say early work by system of a down, most people i know have listened too the hypnotise/mesmorise albums but dont know about the early stuff which is just as good in my opinion

A real metalhead would know who Death is and how purely awesome they are (Not a stab at you, just people who claim to be metalheads for life, then I ask if they listen to Death they are like "wtf?") While Possessed's Seven Churches was the fisrt metal album, Death made Death metal demos 2 years before that was released. God anyone would know that by now. Gosh.
