From the out-of-the-blue character death to the friend is your enemy deal, most aspiring games have several twists in the plot that either turn you in a different direction or throw you off completely.

In this thread list your top three / five / ten twists and maybe briefly explain what it was about them that caught you off guard.

To start us off
I picked up Bioshock from the steam sales and to say the least it was well worth £3. The twist that blew my mind was probably the obvious one to those who have played it. Atlas reveals himself to be Fontaine and that you, the player, were created and conditioned to obey everything an individual says so long as they utter the phrase 'Would you kindly'. I might not have realised had it not been for the flashback, but those three words were right there from the beginning of the game.

Keep your friends close. Lance Vance was one smooth mo-fo. After gunning down all those cubans, saving his life and working your way up from the streets and finally getting rid of Diaz, he goes and sells you out and then tries to kill you.

The Terra section. Zidane finds out that it was originally supposed to be him doing the dirty work instead of Kuja, and that Kuja and he are the same.

Agro's death was completely unexpected and quite sad to me. It was great to pump me up to kill Malus.

[sub][sub][sub][sub]I'm aware Agro survives in the end. That bastard has got to be the 17th Colossus, I mean hell he's invincible![/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

Red Dead Redemption where
John Marston fucking dies! Don't get me wrong, it was a dramatic and well done twist, but I hate playing as his pussy-ass son.

The most recent one I can think of is when your enemy turns out to be your friend:

Just Cause 2: Tom Sheldon, the one you're hunting, turns out to be Sloth Demon, the man who helped you all along.

Wasn't a major "OMGHADWTFJUSTHAPPEND!?".. but more like a "oh? That's interesting. Didn't see that one comming"

Persona 4

...Adachi is the killer. A pretty surprising plot twist on it's own but it gets even better when you find out that he was killing people just for shits and giggles

A truly great antagonist. You don't suspect him at all.

I didn't like that twist because
John could have easily took cover behind the window and tossed dynamite outside to make them scatter, and then deal with them, but instead he walks out the front door.
That didn't make sense to me.

Hate to be part of the crowd but

When Captain Price pops through the hole in the wall, I genuinely, out loud, shouted "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!?" - I thought he was dead, but no, just mentally ill.

Everything.

A serious one now

The 'secret' mission with Julius at the end. Kinda cleared things up, but met with much "What the fuck is HE doing here?"

The point of it was that
John was sacrificing himself to save his family. If he had killed the federal agents more would have come. It was a powerful moment in the game that I really liked. But I don't like Jack

Unfortuantly, all the good one's I've seen or done have been mentioned. The only one I have left is

Kessler is you from the future, trying to prep you for the stuff in the sequal.

Not much of a spoiler, but all the good ones were taken... and just watch, later someone's gonna post one I forgot, and I'll facepalm myself for not thinking of it.

Edit: See above post as prime example... -facepalm for self-

<spoiler= Mass Effect> Saren's ship, Sovereign, is actually a sentient xenocidal alien robot trying to bring an army of others like him, called Reapers, to come wipe out all sentient life in the galaxy.

The Collectors are actually the Protheans after they were enslaved and "ascended" by the reapers. These Reaper fellows seem like real assholes, tbh..

<spoiler= Dragon Age: Origins> Okay, not that big of a spoiler, but Duncan dies at the first bloody battle of the game!? The previews made him look like one of the big characters. I thought he was going to be the Obi-Wan in my party

/Bioware fanboy-ishness

Haven't played Bioshock, saw Vice City coming form a mile away and yes Final Fantasy IX blew my mind. There are loads in Metal Gear Solid I don't even know where to begin, probably the coolest is the whole ending sequence to MGS2, that whole game was a mindfuck!

He could have saved his family simply by leaving them. He didn't have to die, so that scene seemed pointless to me.

Even if he did just let them take him away, did you expect Edgar Ross to actually let him live? He'd be tried, executed and vilified all with nary a whimper from him. It was the only thing he could do, to be shot down in a blaze of glory.
