Hey is it me or does it seem that the United Nations seems to be failing a its job? I mean shouldn't the United Nations have sent a military force to Dar for to stop the genocide? Shouldn't a multinational naval force of UN nation have gone to deal with the Pirates in the straights of Malacca and off of Somalia? maybe I am just being naive but it seems to me that these are the kinds of things the United Nations was designed for, so what do you think?

honestly they have really no power. As much as i want them to have some sort of official military force or for them to get something done they just cant. I'm not going to go into details on why they don't have these things but really they way they set up their governing body is just idiotic. No one trusts them.

They can't get anything done!

They still have the same problems from when they were the League of Nations :/

The League of Nations sounded cooler too... though that might just be the Justice League reference

have? the league of nations fell apart and world war II followed not to long after. The UN can't do a thing without the support of the US behind it sadly, if you ask me we need to leave them so they can either flourish on their own or fall apart to their own devices.

Really they have no powers, they are cosmetic but there is too many vetoes in place for it to be an effective agency. Serious whats teh last truely influential thing they did?

The Purposes of the United Nations are:

1. To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace;

ok so basically they are not doing there jobs (or is it job?)because they are allowing direct confrontations to peace (such as piracy) flourish all over the world

The UN is a failed concept for a single reason: The five perminate security councle members. Thanks to the big fives existance there is no ends of politics involved. They can even prevent a bill from comming to the floor, and easily can overturn it anyway. If one of the big five are profiting from a war somewhere then the UN is powerless to stop it...

so UN = fail.

International politics is a tricky enough situation as it is outside of the UN, it's even harder for them to try and resolve issues when the majority of governments can't agree on many different issues, from trade tarifs to territory issues to differences of opinion in religious views or weapon stockpiling. The UN has very limited room to move in the international arena, and it's easy for us to condemn them for doing nothing when if we were in there position we would be unable to do anything either. They just have little jurasdiction over sovereignty or other international issues, and always will while governments have a hard time agreeing on things.

Pretty much yes so dido.
Newsweek did a "Ten Questions" piece on Koffi Annan and the last question was "How do you become UN Secretary?"
His answer.
"By accident."

Indeed. The UN said no the war in Iraq, yet Dubya went ahead with it anyway. They have no actual power. It all depends on everyone behaving properly. It's like anarchy.

The UN exists for one reason and one reason alone: To make sure there is no WW3. To make that possible they are supposed to make sure countries trade or doesn't trade.

They can do other things. But 5 nations have veto: Russia, USA, France, GB and Germany. Or where there only 4 nations? Was it China instead of Germany? Anyhow to get those nations all to agree is damned near impossible. Hence the UN cannot fulfill it's purpose.

Anyway it is ALL about the money.

True, they had the same problems, but the UN is actually way more powerful than the League ever was. The problem with the UN is that nobody wants to give up enough of their sovereignty for the collective organization to have enough power to really change things in the world. However, there have been some situations the UN handled really well, like what it's doing now in Kosovo.
