Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, which was a FPS actually developed by the same people as No One Lives Forever. Cool game that most people I've mentioned it to never heard of it. It had you playing on foot half the time and the other have the time in a giant robot. Both modes played like a FPS though, it was pretty sweet. I think it was the first Lithtech Engine game.
Ahh good times, never has it been more fun to trample puny humans in a huge robot :D

A long long time ago, I remember playing a game called Rival Schools, and that has gone down as my all time favourite fighter, easily surpassing the likes of Tekken and Virtuasl Fighter at the time.

Also, Soulblade was effin' fantastic.

Among those that come to mind are Total Annihilation, Dark Omen, Dungeon Keeper, Shining Force I/II on the Megadrive and a real underdog that deserved more merit, Sparkster: The Rocket Knight Adventure.

There are way too many gems that were unnoticed because of mainstream giants like Sonic, who is to blame for overshadowing Sparkster and Ristar.

I've said this before and I'll say it again:

War of the Monsters. One of the best fighting games released in the past ten years, and nobody's heard of it =(
One of the few fighting games i would actually consider buying a sequel for.

Edit: My vote goes out to the Shadow Hearts.

I'll say Psychonauts, it's probably the best platformer I have ever played.
Psychonauts sure as hell ain't unsung on the Escapist after that Zero Punctuation review.

Other than little flash games on the net, I'm not sure I'm really allowed to contribute here. I've never really tried or seen anything that no-one else has heard of. There are even Escapists who know what Oddworld is.

I'd just like to point out, even though it isn't out yet, that Edge of Twilight is a currently unsung game that looks bloody brilliant. Why aren't we Escapists talking about this game? Am I the only one who thinks it looks amazing?!
Nope, I think it looks bloody cool too. ^_^
Also I'm a long time Oddworld fan, I wish more people here liked the games. I think they're classics.
Long time Oddworld fan here as well.

The Hearts of Iron games are pretty unsung and Freedom Fighters.

There's this game called Halo...

JK. Really the only game I've played that's not all too popular is Team Fortress 2. Yes, I know it's marginally popular and usually considered good by the people who do play it (well, except this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaX0q76igds ), but IMO, I think it's overall pretty underrated
You're kidding, right? The Escapist held it's own TF2 tournament last month! There are an absolute ton of people here who play and love TF2! Myself included!

Search for TF2 or Team Fortress in the forum search bar, you'll see what I mean.
Amen brother!

Any of the Legacy of Kain series. Blood Omen, Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2, Defiance. Some of my most beloved games that next to no-one has heard of. Oh the afternoons I spent playing them... Those were the days.

Chrono Trigger/Cross. There aren't many Jrpg's that are terribly interesting, but these two nail it. Interesting characters, fantastic music, complex and emotionally deep stories, and far and wide considered two of the best of all time, but nobody seems to have played them aside from the hardcore old schoolers.

How old are we talking? I could go back pretty far to unsung awesome games I used to play serially...

I'd have to put forth Theme Hospital by Bullfrog (Dungeon Keeper folks). I still boggle at the laughs I got out of that silly game.

I dunno how Unsung it was, but Jade Cocoon 1 was a really great game in my opinion
Couldn't get a copy of the 2nd one though

Abe's Oddysey and Exodus were also pretty amazing.
there was also i think it was called Kolona or something or other. i remember it was fun
Mmmmm, I loved Jade Cocoon, and I have the second, you don't know what you're missing :) The NPC's are all unique, the bosses can be pretty challenging and the monsters you can combine are amazing. I've got quite skilled at it and have a really good team, one of the only sorta monster collection games where I've got really attached to my underlings :p

Me and my cousin still reminisce about that game, did so just two days ago in fact.

My choice would be Blast Chamber for the PS1, and Tenchu Z on the 360. Tenchu Z admittedly was probably originally for the Xbox but I don't care it rocks something fierce.

Oh, I have one, Hoshigami Remix for the DS :) I've yet to meet anyone whos heard of it, its sort of in the vein of FF Tactics. Its magic mechanic is somewhat easier, but it is PUNISHINGLY hard, and involves a bit of grinding in the training towers.

Theres this really interesting worship.deity mechanic, where whichever god a character worships, they get different perks as they level up, and bonuses to different schools of magic. I'd advise anyone who loves TBS games to play it. The magic itself is really cool too, you can upgrade the "coinfleigms" that the spells come from, increasing their damage and AOE until they're quite apocalyptic :)

One thing though DO NOT BELIEVE THE REVIEWS you read, some of them say that if a character dies during battle without being revived before the end they're gone forever, but i've just never had that happen *shrugs* maybe a newer version, or it changed for the european release, but thats beside the point :)

Imperishable Night. It is an insane vertical shooter!

Edit: This photo of the game, and that is only Normal difficultly. You should see Lunatic.
oh man. I'm getting a migraine just looking at it...

well, a relatively unknown game that i swear by is sins of a solar empire, i have heard other people talking of it, but it's nowhere near as debated as say halo, or GTA.

none.or at least none come to mind right now.maybe the longest played by me game is world of warcraft,i DONT really know why but there's just something about being able to kill another person with a sword/hammer/magick.and be able to send your regards to their MOTHER while you're at it.
