That's funny. Consoles say that Firefall is dead.

Can I get a "BUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRNNN!!!" from the audience, please?
Except that his message was blasting how franchise monopolies and fear are killing the industry, and the Escapist cut that down to just "consoles are dead" just for a flame war. A quick internet search shows this to be the case. You fell for it, big time.

Then again, what do facts matter when you are beating up a strawman placed there to just stroke egos?

The only one who got burned here was you.
The words of someone too desperate to prove something that is not true. I was making a Nietzeche/God joke and it flew over your head. Very classy. You can get down off the soap box now. Nobody 'fell for' anything...besides you.

EDIT: Oh, and you're abusive too. I'm sure nobody will take notice of that.

Long live the zombified gaming industry! Hail! Hail!

OT: PC gaming is less than 10% of the market. If you want to double down on that, that's fine. But seriously, some people need perspective.
Actually the PC is about as big as the 360 or the PS3. "core-gaming" wise that is. For example EA that also sells massive sellers and cash grabs like madden, NFL, FIFA etc. for consoles makes more from the PC than the xbox...

Consoles are dead if the PS4 is indicative of this next cycle. I want the hardware to get better and more advanced with each generation; it's really that simple. What I don't want it all the bullshit that came with this gen to be amplified 10 fold with the next, and that appears to be exactly what is coming. I have no plans to get a PS4, and if even half the rumors of the next Xbox are true, I won't be getting one of those either. Everything now has to be a social hub, a tablet, a windows 8 or something else equally as horrifying, distracting or otherwise ridiculous and painful to the gaming experience. I just don't want any part of this, so I just may be out the door this time. That's a big thing for me to say since I've bought every console up till now. If people like me are leaving it paints a grim picture of whats to come. How many more developers will disappear like THQ in the next few years? How many do you think it will take before the general gaming public becomes more alarmed? They aren't really going to take notice until it's an outright catastrophe, and by then it will be too late. What happens when an entity like EA finally kicks it? That tumor has it's tentacles attached to so many developers and IPs, it might just kill the patient to remove it.

But yeah, something is definitely wrong when I find myself buying 3x more SNES and PS1 games over ebay then current/new AAA titles. And no, these games aren't cheaper, they are actually more expensive in many cases. I am happy to pay it, to, because unlike Gears of Duty Black brotherhood Ascension Ops 4, the older games are usually worth it, and don't come with any catches to play them or politics attached.

Enjoy your Sim Shitty.

This.

We are shifting away from a dedicated area in our homes just for the computer.
We are also shifting away from the living room console age as gaming becomes more mobile.

The future of gaming prices has already seeped into PC's giving it more life. Consoles will hopefully be revitalized in this manor soon as well. But ultimately I don't see either being used heavily in the next 10 years.

"Dead" is a shock word of course. I'd sooner use the term evolving.

This guy has enough money to afford a gaming computer while not everyone has. A console will have AAA games that support it for the life of the console, which may be a decade. Can you say the same for a PC?

I game on a PC because steam, I can carry my laptop everywhere and it can do more then play games. Granted I may not be correct and correct me if I'm wrong but both the PC and console have their place.
I definitely agree about both having their place, but next-gen consoles don't seem to want to be in that place. The biggest console advantage is simplicity - Insert the disc and play. I don't know about the PS3, but it doesn't seem that the next X-box will have that simplicity.

As for being unaffordable - that's not true. You will eventually want to but a better desktop or laptop PC, regardless of your gaming habits. If you add what you'd pay for a console to what you'd be willing to spend on a non-gaming PC, you will be able to get a decent gaming PC instead of a console.

GAEM JURNALIZM!!!

But seriously, just like the people who claimed PC gaming was dieing. This also seems about as baseless a claim. And really shouldn't be news worthy. At least not without any kind of evidence to back up their claims.

Isn't that only 10% of the retail market?
I based the number off Gabe "Jesus" Newell's own estimates of the size of the market, of which he claims to be like 200% of te PC gaming market. If the figures on the size of the overall market are retail only, then the PC would be even smaller since Gabe's already talking digital distribution.

Honestly, if you take the value of the markets, PC gaming is about 5.6% of the market share, which I round up to 6, which I still rounded up to "less than 10%."

Speaking as a member of the glorious PC master race™ this could arguably be a good thing! After all, we cannot let just anyone into the aristocracy. Nope nope nope. Now excuse me while I adjust my monocle and help myself to some of whatever stuffy snobs eat.

Right, that's it for silliness, I think. While I personally do not hold much fondness for consoles (mostly because I simply can't focus on the game with a controller, those things make me too acutely aware of what my hands are doing), I'm pretty sure they're not going away anytime soon; specially not with Xbox still being very much alive, Microsoft doesn't really have a vested interest interest in pushing Windows forward as a gaming platform; the PC can still try and take a bite or two into the console market shares.

How is this not true? Where is the sea of middle games the PS2 era had? When was the last time you saw games on retail shelves that WEREN'T affiliated with a big business or indie?

Console gaming is dominated by high costs, there is no way around it.

How is it not true that hiring and firing are part of AAA game development?

How is any of his claims "false?" How is this not true when its common knowledge to the point even Jim Sterling and Extra Credits spout it? From a business perspective, its easier to go PC, or casual and mobile than to try to carve out a niche in a locked down console market.
Thank you for lifting this.

This rings true in my book.

I should probably try Firefall some time, or maybe not. But eh, as long as I draw breath I will find a way to game, on something, somewhere.

I don't think consoles will ever truly die when a decent gaming rig for pc is so expensive. When an average person looks into gaming, the barrier to entry is lower on consoles, where they just have to pay around $300 bucks for years of gaming. There is no need to buy graphics cards and upgrade a console. Every game you buy for it will work on it, no need to check specifications. Consoles are simpler and more accessible to the average gamer.

Based on EA's financial results:

http://investor.ea.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=696991 (and apparently it was PC making more than PS3)

PC isn't a small market, it might be a bit different than the console market but if definitely isn't small. Especially since small devs and niche products do much better on PCs (see indie gaming scene).

With Firefall's strong concentration on shooter mechanics, it actually makes more sense than most to jump to the TV and controller setup.
I call shenanigans!

Shooters we born on the PC, and a keyboard and mouse are far more precise than any controller setup. Two thumbs vs. the dexterity of two hands? Yeah... Ok...

One of the major problems with consoles is that they tend to, "Box in," their releases. The platform can't be upgraded, and it limits the technological capabilities of games, and it limits the technology that can be employed to develop them due to the limited hardware specs.

While I can't say that consoles are dead, I stopped wasting my money on them a decade ago. I see the next generation of consoles as being a huge step in the wrong direction.

What d'you mean, it makes more sense to jump to the TV and controler setup? Shooters have always been best controlled by a mouse.
