How, exactly, did the police know he was tangentially involved in this? Were they tipped off or are they simply monitoring the entire internet all the time and will invade people's homes without warrant because we're all so free?

It never ceases to amaze me just how dense these people are to not think "will me being a total **** surely piss off everyone around me?", because they should be well aware that doing so serves no purpose at all other than to create anger.

I hope he get's caught and anyone else in the future for their shitty pathetic crimes.

there also needs to be an ultimatum of a punishment for people like him, specifically having their rights to use any sort of technology that can connect to the internet stripped from them entirely for the rest of their life, that way they'll never get to experience anything from the internet and will never bother anyone ever again while serving their sentence.

Those involved in DDOSing are losers. Being able to DDOS doesn't make you a hacker anymore than owning a gun gives you a super power. Hope this little turd gets thrown in jail for long long time.
State of the internet:

MOBA player makes rancid comment on Facebook. Naked, alone, and crying on suicide watch in solitary facing 8 years.

These turds are going to face less than a year if caught.

People that rob content creators operating on fair use (or even if they're using their own content) get to keep the money they steal while Google threatens the robbed with lawsuits.
This post made me sad. To be fair though as far as I know the hackers and copyright scammers didn't use foul language. Wars have started over that kind of things.
Not irony so to speak, but the reason the kid was arrested in Texas was because of a Canadian trolling around Facebook trying to get reward money.

Can't say I really care. It's kind of amusing in a bizarre way. I guess it works as a publicity stunt. People will subscribe just to follow this junk, and Phantomlord will likely get more ad revenue from the increase of viewers. After scrolling through the reddit thread, and looking at some screencaps, I'd find it believable if Phantomlord did have a connection with DERP. He somewhat encourages them.

well the obvious response would be to play a game that doesn't need to connect to any server.

Also, I don't think A DDOS attack is really hacking. Anyone with access to a server network can push a button to do a DDOS attack. No hacking skill involved.
That is one of the first lessons of Information Assurance. You are absolutely correct, it's frustrating to see people able to organize DDOS attacks labled as hackers. The act lacks any skill, finesse, or subtlety.

It's a shame that these events are becoming more and more common, there seems to always be an entity seeking to undermine any sort of technological advancement lately.
I think it's as good a label as any. Stealing from a baby is still theft, so just throwing enough users at a system to bring a servers to it's knees is still hacking. It is less impressive than breaking into a system via custom made software and understanding of passwords, but it still is an attempt to break down a server electronically.

At very least, they just sound like a bunch of trolls who are not going to be very good at covering their tracks.

What this article doesn't mention is that the "victim" here was in contact with the DDOS-ers egging them on (IIRC the taking down DoTA2 if he loses thing was his idea) and telling people that if they subscribe (which costs money on Twitch IIRC) he would act as a go between to let them ask the assholes from DERP questions. He isn't victim in any way here, his channel has never had so many viewers/subs.
I didn't really see that from the info posted.

Wait.....so he's assisting in participation of a criminal act just to increase his channel views? I hope a [young] judge understands what kind of BS he's pulling and throws the damned Book at him.

Honestly, I don't really care much about PhantomLord being inconvenienced. I watched some of his streams and he's kind of an asshole and I'm inclined to believe the posts in this thread stating that he was enticing the "hackers" and either provoking them or working in concert with them. However, this stunt likely hit hundreds of thousands of people who were just trying to play their games in peace. PhantomLord wasn't targeted. His games were. And that's why I hope these morons get caught and punished...

Makes me wonder, is there any kind of betting or gambling surrounding MOBAs like DOTA? Seems funny that they threw their toys out of the pram after he lost a match they told him not to lose, just speculation of course.

Getting arrested and handcuffed at gunpoint when there is no evidence of him committing any offence or any sign of him being dangerous is out of fucking order though, what kind of police state does he live in?

Y'know, since the dawn of the Internet there was a label for this that was apart from the real hackers (Good or bad), and should be brought back: Script kiddies. Those competent enough to run an automated script to do the work they could never do on their own. Seems to fit the modern era of renting a botnet and using it to 'take down' a website by consuming all available bandwidth to a T.

Can we please stop referring to DDoSers as hackers? DDoS attackers are as much hackers as someone using dynamite to break a lock is a lockpicker. All their doing is hitting it with brute force til it fails. Hacker implies some sort of skill, a DDoS attack requires next to none.

since mobas are hugely popular in china i would say there is probably betting worth millions going on.
in dota people also like to bet their ingame items on pro matches but i think the streamer is primarily known as a lol player so i doubt that was a actor.
however i don't doubt in the next couple of years we will see DDoS attacks on servers because people bet on the wrong horse.

I watched the steam of this guy for a few minutes before I remembered how little I cared. At some point he was just whoring for views, as he didn't just stream an offline game and was "negotiating" with the guys on IRC like they were some sort of computer terrorists or some shit like that.

So they attacked Dota2, LoL, Blizzards and EA servers? Everything I hate at once? All the cancer of gaming? I am not even mad, I hope they never get caught and keep doing god's work. Somebody should give those guys a medal.

The religious side of me hopes there's a special place in Hell for people who think this level of griefing is funny. I really hope any hassle the streamer has to go through is minimal and the authorities find the correct perpetrator in the end. There isn't enough bad karma in the world for that kind of behavior.
And I hope there is a special place in hell for people who wish hell onto other people but hey, you can't always get what you want.

A police raid? I'd sue the shit out of that police department. What happened to simple knock on the door and peaceful apprehension? He's not a fuckin' terrorist. He's a suspect in a DDoS attack! It's not even real hacking. Suspicion that someone might be involved in hacking doesn't justify a fuckin' raid on his house. When did this become the norm? I used to laugh at the SWAT team raiding the house of that hacker from the movie "Hackers" but that's the reality these days. A fuckin' police state. Only in America. And let's face it. The same is happening in the UK.

Care to back that up with a little evidence? As far as i can see you're the only one claiming this.

Also i'm not so fond of blaming the victim for this, if he didnt 'egg them on' then why should he be expected to curtail his gaming becuase a bunch of dicks have taken issue with him?
