Well UK humans aren't too bad either...

But seriously, not to sound like a new-age hippy or anything, with all the war/suffering/opression/Coldplay albums/etc in the world I'd say "awesome" is a bit much. Humans, as a species, are quite talented at inventing ingenious solutions to problems. The sticking point is that most of these solutions are required only because some other humans caused the bloody problem in the first place.

"We are the dominant species" - And yet, cockroaches, possibly one of the lowest things on the food chain, will survive the nuclear holocaust that we, as the dominant species, will bring upon ourselves.
Oh? When is that going to happen? And why?

The Virgo said:
"We have eradicated disease" - I only have one thing to say:

Last time I checked, we still have HIV/AIDS, Herpes, Polio, H1N1 and so many others, ones that I haven't even heard of. Really, where did you get that from?
While the original statement is poorly phrased, we have eliminated a larger number of illnesses and developed more effective countermeasures to disease than ants or felines.

The Virgo said:
"We have been in space" - The space shuttle program just got canceled for us Americans, meaning that the billions of tax dollars spent on giant rockets was just moot.
America accounts for a small portion of the human race, and there's still use for the data gathered in the future.

Have a look here:

Plus while the current economic crisis is not pleasant I don't see it going on indefinitely any more than I see a boom go on indefinitely.

The Virgo said:
"And we're just awesome" - I'm not going to even justify that last phrase with a proper answer. Let me just say that we are not awesome and that you DO NOT want me to show you a citation for that line. Trust me.
What species is it that have done more good than humanity and whom we are apparently so far inferior to? - The total absence of an intelligent species with a desire for exploration and expansion didn't do the dinosaurs any favours.

Ahhh the internet misanthrope spam.

Yes; the world is a beautiful and wonderful place and the people within it doubly so, Humanity is a great force for good. However being a pessimist is cool, so yeah.

Most people seem to be downers so far, but I agree. The human species is an amazing thing and we are the dominant species on the planet with no other species coming close. I do think we are capable of extraordinary things, but also of horrible things we can do to each other and the planet.

Maybe we should set a higher standard for ourselves so we can be even better. There does not seem to be a limit that we as a species can accomplish. Every generation knows more than the last. We just have to be careful that we don't destroy each other.

Because we are the only creatures in the multiverse to have created boredom, we need something to amuse us. And they do say the simplest things entertain the simplest minds.

Because those things were acomplished by smart people like doctors and NASA dudes, the rest of the human race doesn't fit that catagory, we have not eradicated disease, ther still exist, and, painful to type this , WE CREATED LAWERS, all good accomplishments are negated by this. Also, the strict social expectencies of modern conformity prevent us from doing anything further productive, our society doesn't value educuation with it being considered socialy acceptably to drop out of highschool, crime is spiraling, we live in such fear of terrorism that we can't even bring liquids onto planes, and 95% of our species acts like you and says we are making progress. If you still don't get it, I will let Greg Graffin explain through awsome music, pay close attention to the pictures

Only a small number of our population are "amazing" as it was they who allowed the achievements you listed you take place.

The majority are boring, stupid, self-absorbed, twats who think far to highly of themselves and far to lowly of everyone else.

Because we, if I'm not mistaken, are the only species that naturally, almost instinctively, hates itself. A colony of ants doesn't fight itself, but a colony of humans would.

Yes, that is true, a lot of disease has been eradicated, but there are still a lot more.

But if you think about it, it hasn't really improved the human race as a whole very much. Sending guys into space didn't cure diseases, didn't build colonies (unless you include the ISS, but it's not really a colony) or anything like that.

More GOOD than humanity? Ha! For every good thing we have done we have done two bad things.

As we speak, people are getting raped, murdered, abused or beheaded.

I can't exactly be proud of my kind when I realise that humans like me have brought mass-murder, extreme racism, enviromental damage and other stuff upon this planet and it's inhabitants.

Best guess would be the things that are far from amazing.

Example: War, Slavery, Republicans etc.
And for every not so great thing we've done there are just as many amazing things that get little credit or mention (and to it's credit, war has been the source of a lot of our technological advancements).

Because we're a corrupted species that destroys anything it steps on and kills other humans for fun.
Look at the response to the first chap (or chapette) above, it's not like the rest of nature runs on the laws of Disney, loving and caring for one another and dancing in the flower gardens while the big bad humans just come along to fuck everything up and make cute little bunnies cry.

We aren't a corrupt species (there are corrupt people but that hardly accounts for all people), we don't destroy everything (look at how huge and popular various environmental and conservationalist programes have become) and I think you'll find that the only people who kill other humans for fun happen to be the twisted and demented psychopaths (who make up a minority), as a general rule, deaths at the hands of other humans have steadily declined throughout history (in other words, we humans have actually showed more restaint and mercy towards each other the further away we've gotten from our history as regular animals).

Sorry to completely sink your 'humans are bastards' thing there.

THANK you! I have said this and I'm glad someone agrees.

I LOVE our species. No matter what happens to the planet, we adapt. No matter how bad an idea seems, we try it anyway, just because!

And, despite the fact that we have made enough nukes to devastate a dozen solar systems, we have managed to keep from eradicating our entire species and only TWO have ever been dropped in anger.

We also invented bacon, porn and acid. What more could you want???

-raises hand-

I, for one, think we're pretty amazing. Not even just humanity. The human body is fucking awesome. The way all these seemingly precious processes work together to create a functional organism that is surprisingly durable and capable of amazing things.

Brb, biology orgasm.

Can't believe I have to point this out so late in a thread but Cockroaches cannot survive a nuclear holocaust.

We are an okay species and if we weren't so caught up in why we are here and each of our individual dreams we could start living! Wouldn't that be amazing? At least the majority of us have evolved from shit flinging apes we have much to be thankful for.

We should be an awesome race. However, we have been destroying the planet and ourselves. Human beings, at the heart of it, are bastards. Look at all the terrible things we have done. The Crusades, the expulsion of Native Americans from their land, the Holocaust, the invention of a weapon that can eradicate an entire city in the blink of an eye, to have actually USED said weapon not once, but twice. There was the Rape of Nanking, the genocides in Turkey, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur, Iraq, etc. 9/11 was caused by HUMANS.
The longer we have been around, the more problems we have caused. Now it's getting to an even bigger level with the natural disasters that may have been caused by climate change. Saying that the human race is awesome is only true in small instances that are outweighed by our darker and much larger instances of violence and hatred.

Yeah, we have also gone from inventing the lightbulb to smashing protons together at the speed of light in only 200 years.

I'm just going to presume that anyone who says Humans are worthless and should just die are idiots.

Actually,I did have a big speech planned for something like this, but FUCK IT,so yeah.Oh,you're crying about how we brought murder, damage to the environment and other animals, let's just take a few steps back in History.A rather painfully big amount of steps, because we're going back a few million years.Huh,bring down trees and pollute to protect ourselves by creating tools?Fuck that,we're harming the environment!Kill animals because they're trying to kill us,we need food to survive, and their fur to keep us warm and away from temperature-related-diseases?FUCK THAT,we're CRUELY MURDERING INNOCENT ANIMALS!Eat fish so our brains can start evolving?Nah,poor little fish!Wait, how about plants? Can we eat plants?Nope,we can't.They're living beings too(and being vegetarian is retarded)!
If you love your animals so fucking much you might as well go live with them.See if THEY wouldn't kill YOU for food(or even themselves).

Honestly I love humanity I mean I know we kill each other and pollute but think of how unique we are. You know the age old question? Why are we here? Well in the entire history of the planet not for billions of years has any other life form asked that question. I mean we are probably the only species on the planet capable of asking that question. My favourite way to explain humanity is this: We are walking an almost endless road and with every other step we shoot ourselves in the foot yet somehow we just keep walking

Each time we fall on the ground we get up and start walking again.
