The Americans played really well. They were a tight unit and they all knew thier places, holding the English down for the whole game and with a mostly tight defence.

England were as usual, much less than the sum of thier parts. A shoddy performance from players who are supposed to be some of the best in the world.

Honestly I don't understand soccer (football for you annoying non Americans =P) you play one and a half hours for 1 point? Talk about a snooze fest. That's just my opinion.
It's better than watching American Football, my god is that sport boring.

When did a draw automatically mean america wins?
Because it is a win for America. Football (soccor) in America is a underrated sport and teams worldwide have never taken the USA team seriously. Its a very David vs Goliath type story, and even though USA didn't win in the traditional sense, they were able to play a good match against a heavily favored opponent. And in that sense, it is a win.

That being said, yes, the US goal was pretty damn lucky. Both teams played pretty horribly during the middle of the match. The last 20 mins were incredible and both teams made great attacks.

Howard played one heck of a game. Especially in the final drives. He picked up for our defensive mistakes immensely.

ouch a Mets fan...Go Yankees!
Go Red Sox!

I'm not even American, it's just that me and my brother saw a baseball game on the TV when we visited (White vs Red sox). I decided to side with Red on a whim, and he sided with White

Now I guess I just support them in a weirdly detached way

OT: Meh, us English (not me, not a football guy) deserved to tie, because we were all pumped up on our "Americans can't win in sports that other countries play", citing Baseball, American Football and, to a lesser extent, Ice Hockey as evidence.

Whilst I think that's arrogant coming from England, I'd have to side with them in the fact that you call your national sporting events the "World Series"

Didn't the British win Bunker Hill as well? Not a great win, but still 235 years ago...

You dont usually celebrate over a draw.
Sigh, so cynical.

If you're the complete underdog against a far higher-rated team, then yes, a draw is a reason to celebrate.

I'll never forget our draw against England in Italia 90, the whole of Ireland went mental.

Of course, the next time we played England we were winning but the English fans tore thier seats up and threw them at Irish fans, stopping the game. That was very frustrating.

I was extremely surprised that the US was even playing in the world cup. When they tied England, I nearly shat myself.

As a Scot the result has had me with a permanent smile on my face, helping to rub it in to everybody who thought England would pummel the US. It's just grand.

Don't know really, I'm assuming England will prevail. I actually watched Doctor Who instead... it was a good episode...
Despite the fact that they were on at different times?

And meh, despite being English I have a rooted dislike of the team (Except Robert Green), and my allegiances have been shifted due to a sweep-stake. I still can't believe I got Switzerland and Serbia

Up until friday I really thought the World Cup was the one with the yachts, then I realized that was the Americas Cup. Honestly I hate the fact that people say I'm unpatriotic because I don't care if the USA does well in it or not. It's not that I'm not a patriotic, Gung ho, Yo Joe!, America loving citizen of the US; it's just that I can't care any less for soccer.

Even though the coverage of the match was after Dr. Who?
Iplayer, dear boy ;)
Ahhhh, and suddenly it all becomes clear!

Don't see how I didn't consider it either, seeing as I watched the last 20 minutes on Iplayer myself...

I am English and I laughed when I found out. I am not a football fan nor am I remotely patriotic.

I was finishing off playing Fallout 1 for the first time, and I believe I made the right decision.

Is it bad that as an Englishmen I am sorely tempted to do the same? It's not hatred of my own country as such, it's just when you get people getting so cocky about something they have absolutely no control over I find it very amusing when they get taken down a peg or two.

Ah, the New York Post. I advise my British friends to treat that... "newspaper" as the U.S. version of the Sun, and give it the same credibility.

A lot of people seem to not understand that soccer (as we call it) is one of the few things in which the U.S. is (legitimately) looked down upon as the underdog, and we Americans love to support the underdog (especially when it's us). So a tie against a team we were wholly expected to fold before like an unstable house of cards- that means something to us.

The U.S. goal may have been a fluke, but the team also only allowed England to score one goal during the entire match. That should say something.

Not to you personally, but to all the dildos who are talking about how they were on at different times, I'M AMERICAN. I TORRENTED THE EPISODE AND WATCHED IT DURING THE FOOTBALL GAME. FUCK.

Seriously? Someone whining, when the opposing team does better by saying "it was luck!" It is so annoying...
It was luck. What do you want him to say when something was luck? The word "luck" was created to describe moments of such good fortune.

No, he was going by the facts (and facts have the annoying tendancy of being biased toward the truth)... England are a better team. You said it yourself... the only goal you got was because of major fluke and America was playing well. So America was playing well and England was playing poorly, you only got a goal from a fluke... and America didnt win. So how was the announcer being arrogant? He was doing his job by making the assumptions he made, he couldnt have expected that goal to go in... you cant predict luck, so minusing the luck factor from the game it would have ended 1-0 to England. He did his job to the best of his ability, dont get pissy because he didnt side with your team and couldnt see how luck was on your side for this match.
the entire match he whined about how the US didn't deserve to even be tied with God's gift to the soccer world: England. Announcers are supposed to be objective if it's broadcasted on a national level. Had it been a British announcer in England he can say whatever, but he was completely biased towards england and gave no credit to the fact that the US actually played alright whereas England played like shit. He was a terrible announcer and whined and complained the entire match, but what else can one expect from the Brits?
You said it yourself, the goal was a fluke... you didnt deserve it.

And what was that last sentence? I couldnt hear your stereotyping for all the burgers you stuffed into your mouth.
