Some people do, yes.

Others simply know there is more to life than ensuring 't's are crossed and 'i's are dotted.
Or they are lazy. Or they really like to make it hard for others to read, like an encryption :p

My English grammar is far from perfect, but I try to keep it as decent as I can. My Dutch is pretty much flawlesss and I maintain that on any type of platform, from internet forums to e-mails to instant messaging and phone text messages.

I really don't understand why people who argue against proper use of grammar, punctuaction and spelling always act as if it's this massive effort and yell that they have "better things to do". You're typing messages on an internet forum, so by definition you do not have something better to do. And besides, if you just maintain your grammar a bit it all comes naturally regardless of the medium you try to communicate on.

I think that, in places where the communication is not instant as say, in texting or on some sort of one-on-one messaging system, where you have the time to properly write a post out and to check the spelling (which most web browers now do for you anyway with the use of spell check add-ons), there is no excuse for poorly written posts.

Despite this however, unless a post in incomprehensible, calling someone out of having poor spelling or grammar is being pedantic and is not really worth it, if you can understand what they are trying to say. The only time this is acceptable is if they first claim a superior grasp of the language.

And YouTube doesn't count for much. I think that we all automatically devolve the second we log-in to leave comments, or something.

It's been drilled into me enough times to where it's now automatic. I actually feel weird if I type in a "u" or "ur" or something similar. It just feels...strange. I mean, it takes a fraction of a second extra to type out the other letters and/or to read 'em, so I don't really know why it's so prevalent. I'm guessing it has something to do with text messages on phones and the limited characters, but I'm not sure.

As far as I'm concerned, language is malleable, and I'm perfectly cool with "abusing" it.. but you should know what it is before you abuse it. Everyone oughta at least have a competent grasp of basic English (or insert other language) structure before they start taking liberties with it. Most of the time, we're not writing epic theses here on the 'nets, so sloppiness is kosher (and often superior, what for conveying conversational stylings and whatnot), but there's still a basic necessity of understand-ish-ability. Take language where you will, but remember what came before. Try to keep *some* kind of law/consensus.

The only difference between my grammar here and everywhere else, such as during games or an instant messenger thingies, is I use full stops here. I also spell stuff right here more often, because The Escapist gets Chrome's spell checker on the case.

After being ridiculously affronted by the Youtube comments I bothered to read I began to wonder: does anybody on the internet use proper grammar all the time?
With no-one to actually form a consensus I decided to turn here; so fellow Escapists I ask you: how often do you bother to construct your posts using proper grammar and spelling (anywhere)?
Also, post if this should be a poll so that I can fix it.
EDIT: I am glad that people see the irony behind my title.
Whenever I have the time (which is always), I use proper Grammar:)

I try to use proper grammer all the time.
Even though my english isn't the best and I sometimes make many mistakes.

Though I abuse the smileys. I mostly put them in all my sentences. ^_^

I've never been too good at the old spelling and grammer. But I try my best and I hope that when I post somehing, it is at least understandable.

I try my best with grammar but I'm dyslexic so most of the time there are still some mistakes which the computer can't tell me or that I don't notice.

I am pleased to see that so many of my fellows make the attempt to use correct grammar. I too do my humble best be it forum, texting, instant messaging or in-game chat (the latter can occasionally lead to embarrassing deaths mind).

On a forum like this, I try to use the best grammar. Whereas on Steam or other IM programs, I tend to throw the occasional 'u', 'ur' and other ones.
Basicly this. Using "u" and "ur" in message programs is only efficient.

I believe this person summed it up very well: http://news.deviantart.com/article/132134/
Read the full article, it makes quite a lot of sense.

I usually try to maintain a high level of grammar in every situation, be it Facebook, Youtube or any forums I visit. At the same time though I am prone to mistakes so that is why I don't take the first opportunity to point out someone Else's mistakes and mock them for it. I can usually stand when people use letters such as 'u' in replacement for words. But I do get rather aggravated when they deliberately replace words such as 'the' with 'teh' to try and be cool.

Edit: On an aside though, I have a friend who ends every sentence with an ellipse. I will always demand he finishes his sentences.

I normally use good grammar on here because I know that if I don't everyone would ***** about it and ignore me. On games I use shorthand because I truthfully don't give a shit; I need to type fast and grammar too slow.

I really don't get grammar nazis. Who cares if someone is using shorthand? As long as it doesn't become ridiculous and hard to understand, I don't care. What I like is when they try to say there's a correlation between intelligence and grammar. No, there isn't. Grammar is just a bunch of pointless standards people have.
