You are an amazingly aware 12-year-old. I like you.
Thanks

Depends on the knowledge of the clerk. Also depends on if the store has a 'black list' of things they shouldn't be selling to people under certain ages. Air Gear may have slipped under the radar, or the clerk may not have known that sealed manga = adult.
Yeah, I should have pointed out that I was talking about my school. But im still confused on how Cowboy Bebop gets confiscated by my teacher while Air Gear (using quick acting) passed.

I don't know all the reasoning behind Escapist member policy, but I'd believe that it has age restrictions because this is not a censored website (at least, not based on simple usage of curses). I think legally they have to restrict ages as a result, but I'm not really sure.
I was talking about like the stereotpyes of twelve year olds. I know my post was pretty vague, but I meant like how most people here will openly rip on 10-14 year olds. I know the age restrications, but I knew I belonged here :D

Why is it that I don't need to be carded for just about any book despite the fact that a lot of them without plastic wrap or a warning on them do indeed have things much worse than most videogames will ever have (said books, where to see the story, I have to create visuals in my mind, meaning that it's thought about more than any visual medium), but when it comes to games with some blood or even a glimpse of nudity require me to show off my ID? (Here's an example: Halo and its books. One requires an ID and has at most what looks like paint on the ground after you shoot an enemy, the other has details about what a bullet does to flesh, bones breaking and piercing skin, melting flesh, nudity, and seeing through the eyes of someone about to die and I could have a five year old buy it).

For that matter, why is it that we need to "protect the childern" when A. we never really did before (in fact, go back in history and we not only gave them dangerous jobs for less pay but also trained them to kill later in life) and B. sheltering never ends good (either they're unprepared, or the just go out of their way and learn it anyways)? And why the hell are parents not responsible for parenting anymore? It's not the government, the school, or a store's job to do yours. Here's a better idea: talk to your kids, learn what they're interested in (Whattheyplay.com is an excelent place, written by gamers for parents), and learn when to put your foot down.
Because these "people" who oppose video games like they do are biting the hand that bleeds.
Or, in other words they are picking out a weaker target, one that is ill equipped to fight back, because they are cowards.

I just want to say, you are the kind of 12 year old I wish 12 year old me would have hung out with, rather than spend my first few teenage years being an anti-social douchebag.

There will always be misguided people in this world, and these "pro-family" groups are an example of this. If we took a poll about how stupid these groups are, there would be a wave of support against such ludicrous people. Anyone with a basic understanding of games and parenting all know that a "Certain Miami Attorney" is a crook, a liar, a litigious bigot, a manipulative tyrant that enjoys misleading the public, etc. This attorney likes to say how violent games create violent people, but there is one very crucial point of evidence that invalidates all of his claims. The very fact that he is still alive today, shows that games do not make people violent. I'm pretty sure if video games did make people violent, he would not be amongst the living, period. I also surprised that children have an allowance that would let them buy video games on their own. Even if there was a law, children would find a way to get these games anyway. Bottom line, there is a reason why video games have ratings. If you don't want your child to play a game that is rated "M", then don't buy them that game. Don't force your way of life on everyone else who might want not agree with your stance, that in itself spits on the values of freedom. Legislating how people buy things is social engineering, and is the mark of fascist thinking. These are, of course, my own opinions, but I feel such people should not be forcing their views on the rest of us.

Except that rating isn't the law, it's up to the retailer's discretion as to whether or not to use the rating system on the boxes to restrict sales.
I'm not sure that's exactly the case when the federal government charges game stores if they sold games to minors that aren't age appropriate.

Haha America, you've done it again.
It's funny how all of these "family values" groups are supporting everything that allows parents to be even worse. Really, any self-respecting culture would instead expect parents to make sure that their kids aren't playing games that they think are too violent. I mean really. It's not like they can sneak off and go smoke some GTA in a back alley, or read it behind a comic book in their bedrooms.

Just a thought on the Governator.

Didn't he just cameo in "The Expendables", but he's telling kids to stay away from violent games?

...does he even understand irony, or hypocrisy?
Why focus just on The Expendables when his entire career is built on the portrayal of shooting things and causing explosions?
Mainly because he took this cameo WHILE condemning games. And I don't see his fat paycheck going towards any charities because of it.
Well he doesn't get payed for being Governor. He refused to because he had a lot of money, my guess is that he running a tad low. Also I agree with you on the hypocrisy but remember, we can't even pass a budget without having to lock people in the state building all night until they pass something.(I still remember that day well)

aren't people in utah mormons?

great, we get lectures in family values from a wacky cult one step from full blown scientology where all the males go looking for 13 year old blood relatives to marry. The whole fucking mormon faith derives from a con man looking to get rich with his wacky tablets only he could read because he had the special glasses, its philosophy is out and out racist and if anyone listens to them they are stupid as well, the only thing worse is the fucking scientologists.

So shut up mormons you pack of child-raping scumbags, i'll listen to people who deserve respect.

as you can tell from my rant i dislike mormons intensly.
You sir are 100% generalizing, I live in Utah and I'm as far from Mormon as you get from becoming a rock.

Anyways, I'm glad we have one politician who's willing to take the flak from supporting these newfangled things called 'Games' that are what 30? 35 years old? Seriously, it didn't take Rock and Roll this long to gain some respect did it?

Seriously? You're missing the entire point.

That M rating is NOT an age limit, it's a recommendation, it's not legally binding, the reason most people can't get one when too young is because of individual store policies, not any law.

That said, I am totally against an age limit.

I am going to write this guy a fucking letter, good for him! Too many politicians cave under the slightest pressure.

These groups seriously call themselves "Pro Family Groups"!? Oh FUCK THEM. It's like the Patriot Act, they assert that if you don't agree with them you are against families, or you're not patriotic, seriously, I don't even fucking care what your group stands for, if it's named like that, I'm against it.

Whoa, does a video game like that exist? Why haven't I found it yet?
It's called Postal 2.
And with THAT reminder comes a graph:

(It's different from the one I'm reminded of, but bear with me)

I've seen this exact same "Violence-curve" everywhere. I'll let it speak for itself.

Okay, I don't know what game lets you decapitate people with shovels and have dogs fetch the heads, but I want it. Now.

Hmmm... I got it wrong. The entire Schwarzenegger debate actually wants to do just that, but even though I'm looking at the FTC website, I'm not seeing penalties for their mystery shopper deals. Source [http://www.ftc.gov/reports/violence/070412MarketingViolentEChildren.pdf] (pdf)

For being the greatest nation in the world, the US has a surprising number of mewling idiots among its citizenry.
Also, what the fuck Schwarzenegger? You? Of all people?
