Valkyria Chronicles 4 announced.

SEGA have just announced Valkyria Chronicles 4, set to be released in 2018 for PS4, Switch and Xbox One (The japanese PS4 version will be March 21st, 2018). It will be receiving an official worldwide release.


The Famitsu article [https://www.famitsu.com/news/201711/20146269.html] has some more screenshots and informaton, with more info coming on the 22nd of November.

Looks like they'll be focusing a lot more on the Federation (the player side) and Empire this time.

Hitoshi Sakimoto, composer of the previous games, will be returning as well as previous character designer Honjou Raita.

It looks like there going for more of a VC1 feel, which is great. VC2 was a huge disappointment. Stuff that made VC1 great:

Large battle where you control multiple character. So obviously VC2 was all about small battle where you control few characters (controlling more than 2 characters was actually kind of an handicap).

Serious war story. So obviously VC2 was all about high school student.

Interesting art book visual. So obviously this was essentially dropped in VC2.

In addition to that they added a whole bunch of grinding, very repetitive map and grating main character.

If they are going back to VC1 style there are a few things I wish they'd fix. More interesting fight objectives (and no more rank after the battle that determine how much fund you get), if you wanted to get good rank, you pretty much had to just rush the objective (usually kill the commander or capture a point). This meant ignoring almost all the map and using 1-2 characters at most. This time around they should add optional objective and more interaction with the environment (capture this point and hold it to lower a bridge in another part of the level and such).

Similarly they need to either remove or severely nerf the ability to reuse the same character multiple time, make us use our large cast.

Also, more variety in terms of equipments would be nice, every piece of equipment was essentially a straight upgrade with very few uninteresting side upgrade.

No, what would be great is if they combine all the positive aspects of all 3 games, instead of just defaulting back to the first. They were already on the right track with both 2 and 3, and now 4 will hopefully be a culmination of all that experimentation.

I don't know where you got the idea that VC1 battle were drawn out, vast majority of them can be cleared under 5 turn (most can be done in 3 or less, with a couple in literally 1 turn, the enemy don't even get to act).

I'd rank VC1 at a 8/10, but 2 at a 4/10 at most, it was a repetitive, grindy affair.

True, VC2 was repetitive, grindy, smaller in scope and went full throttle on the anime cliches, but it does have some merits. The classes were overall better balanced. It wasn't perfect and some (sub)classes were more useful than others but it wasn't like VC1, where after a certain point Scouts reigned supreme in most situations and the only time you'd use an Engineer was to fix damage on your tanks because you got sloppy with them.

This is awesome and unexpected just please let it be good. I was really excited for Valkyria Revolutions but I really did not like the look of it when they had finished and it seems I was not alone.

VC1 on the other hand is one of my favourite games of all time, the anime however yeah well less said the better just pretend it doesnt exist.

I hope it's good. VC1 was one of my favorite PS3 games but watching the series just kind of fall apart after that was super depressing.

Hopefully they get it turned around cause I love me some VC...

Well, colour me surprised. I would have thought that this years God awful Valkyria Revolution would of killed the series off for good. I will not waste words on that "game".

But Valkyria Chronicles is one of my favourite games of all time, it was just a joy to play, even if the story did fall a little into typical JRPG territory. I never played 2 and 3 as I wasn't about to buy a Vita just to play those. I did play Valkyria Revolution and...ugh.

I hope Valkyria Chronicles 4 is good, I like the idea of fighting the war as well as fighting the weather conditions. All it needs to do it refine the gameplay of the first game, write a compelling story and we're good.

I hope that they make it more of a strategy game where the end goal isn't always "capture enemy base" like the first one. To me there's nothing more thrilling than being told to dig in and hold as waves of enemies come at you. I like clearing the map, testing my skills against hopeless odds and such. But when I found out that, in order to get the best rank, all you had to do was blitz Alicia constantly, it killed a lot of the fun for me.

So I guess what I'm saying is, don't make turn count the ONLY thing that matters in your final score for a mission.

woo! I'm hyped up. Revolution was terrible, but the OG game was one of my favorite PS3 titles. Hell, I even liked Valkyria Chronicles GX, even if it was... a bit too anime even for me. Never got the chance to play the third one.

Good to see it's being released widely. I don't game on PC, but I hope VC did well enough there to warrant a PC release in the west, as well.

Classes in 2 only felt more balanced because maps were so tiny. In actuality, it devalued scouts aside from the obvious lack of strong scouts while also breaking Shocktroopers. Alicia and Aika were top tier in 1 thanks to traits and especially Valkyur with Alicia, orders helped especially once you unlocked those that boosted trait proc rates. In 2 though? Easily less than midway through, or near the beginning even, you can get an unlimited number of Rhums. Those unaware, the Rhum was Sylvaria's nigh-sniper ranged machine gun that hit like a Lancer. On big maps in 1, someone like Rosie could dominate portions of the map and open fields. But in 2? It literally covers the entire map.

That isn't even touching the tank either. 1 was inherently balanced with tanks because the second game broke them the moment it introduced the 1cp body. You lose a tiny bit of defense and health, but maintain the boss 1-shot power of OP ace cannons. Combine that with the obtuse and infuriating crafting and progression mechanics, you were better off guaranteeing definite wins rather than waste time and resources TRYING to unlock things to potentially experiment with.

Even on A-rank runs I used just about every class almost equally with VC 1. With 2? You HAD to restrict yourself to 1 or 2 characters in the hope they get the necessary random item to progress along their specific job, else you find some random nobody unit you moved once gets everything. By the end, I used the main character (inherently broken on his own due to him being able to learn and use everything from every class), his main trooper friend with a rhum, and the tank.

2 has its merits, sure, but each and every one of them are overshadowed by how utterly broken the game is.

And considering one of the producers for Revolution is working on 4? Yeah, I don't think this is a game I'll buy and even complete 2 or three times over like I did with the first game.

I never finished the first one, but I enjoyed it immensely.

2 and 3 seem like they kind of went off the rails a little bit.

Hopefully this one gets things right again (and also comes to PC at some point).

One turn could be a long time. I think it felt worse a lot of the times because of the pauses the game would have whenever you issued a order or made a move. It made the times when you were just moving troops up to the front so boring. If they cut out all the unneeded pauses, then that could speed up the game so much.

I hope they improve the grinding and side content in 4.

I am very happy about this. I was actually on /v/ when they announced it, and we were all surprised about it. Hopefully they will port 2 and 3 to the consoles as well.
