Look at the various app markets, look at steams own greenlight and early access. -That- is what we had in store if this had remained. Sure a gold nugget might emerge every now and then, but they'd be swimming in an ocean of liquid dirt. So yeah like you said, it'd end up stifling the good parts.

This made me think of something, would there be youtuber bate mods and what would they look like? Would they be any better than the normal crud that appears on steam or would the established game engine and assets allow for some much more complex and novel ideas and concepts to come to fruition? Or would it follow the current trend to a T?

I dunno but this is all making me depressed, I need some Cr1TiKaL to cheer me up.
