I'd bow in the face of your awesomeness if i wasn't the top Starcraft 2 player in the world. I'm just not in the rankings because i'm TOO good, you know, they don't even let me play. *rolls eyes*
What are you babbling about? DotA was an incredibly easy map to exploit if you had experience with WC3 modding. The people who coded it just weren't very good. From 2003 to 2007 DotA had more holes in it than a block of Swiss cheese.

I'm sure they are. I'm also sure this has nothing to do with your profile website and you are not biased in any way.
ToB and EotA are right next to DotA in the Battle.net Hall of Fame. The lead designer of League of Legends mentions ToB along with DotA in his LoL interviews, and the newest LoL champion is an homage to ToB. ToB was extremely popular in its day, it remains influential, and, yes, it emphasizes teamwork more than DotA does. DotA emphasizes hero-on-hero battles instead. Both styles have their merits.

By logic? If it wasn't a good game, it wouldn't be popular. People don't play games they don't like.
Child, your major premise is flawed. There's no correlation between quality and commercial success. The Jonas Brothers would be homeless if there were.

You just left the eye on the ground? You didn't destroy it? What?... Why! Why would you just leave it there? -- Joking with you.

My 2 cents. Dota is extremely intricate, the community tends to be assholes. I played it competitively for 3 and a half years; was one of the better South African players etc.

The thing about Dota is that it pays off if you've the necessary skill, understanding and most importantly patience. You can play 100 matches and only get about 3 good matches where the teams' skill levels are balanced and those 3 games make it worthwhile. You'll(my own experience) never have a more suspensful and exhilirating experience in any other game. Tournament play is... amazing, maybe because it eliminates the whole "annonymity = license to asshole" aspect since you're all sitting a large hall and not on the internet.

But yeah, after living it for almost 4 years, before becoming fed up with it, I can say that it was worthwhile but I will never get back into it or apply the necessary amount of effort to reach that level of "skill" in any other game. It was worth it, it won't be again.

I think an appropriate metaphor is:
Tying a heroine addict to a chair and telling him "Here are a hundred identical thingies; 99 of them are pieces of glass, 1 is chewable heroine. Well, I'll let you get to it then."
Poopy metaphor but you get the point.

I can go into my psychological theories on the "dota mindset" but like Shamanic Rhythm said:
"In my humble opinion, a game is only as good as its playerbase, and the road to learning all the nuances of playing DotA is paved with shards of broken glass. That's only my opinion, feel free to just ignore it completely."

The road is paved with broken glass but me, my brother and our 2 team mates trained our friends and anyone on campus who were interested. We always held on to the feeling of sportsmanlike enjoyment and we were proud when the university formed a team from those people after both of us had left.

Afterall, it is only a game and no matter how seriously you take it, if you're not making money off of it, then you HAVE to enjoy it.

Sorry about the semi-nostalgic ranting...
