Valve Introduces Hat-for-Game Trading

Valve has launched a new trading system that allows players to trade Team Fortress 2 items for "unopened" games on Steam.

Team Fortress 2's ubiquitous hats are a sticky issue for players. While some see them as simple vanity items to be traded away for new weapons or materials, others pursue them with an almost Ahab-like furor, trading weapons, materials, actual money and even games purchased on Steam for some of the rarer variants. Valve has just made that last part a lot easier.

The new trading system is currently in Beta, and can be downloaded via the settings menu in your Steam client. Once installed, it will allow you to trade TF2 items or Steam Gifts, games you've bought or received but have not accepted yet, with other players. Valve stresses in its FAQ that the new system does not allow players to trade used games. Right now TF2, which went free-to-play earlier in the year, is the only game that supports the trading system but apparently Portal 2 will be getting the same treatment "reasonably soon." Valve is also planning to add several third-party games to the system over the next few months.

Like the recently announced auction house for Diablo 3 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/interviews/9046-Diablo-IIIs-Auction-House], which allows players to trade actual money with other players for in game items, this update really only facilitates something players were doing anyway [http://www.coregamer.co.uk/2010/10/23/valves-tf2-authoring-tools-earn-modders-50k/], and reduces the chances of them getting scammed, or shivved in an alleyway over some kind of cash-for-trilby deal gone terribly wrong. While the idea of trading a game, even one that's a duplicate of a title you already own, for virtual items may seem like madness to some, I think it's a great idea! Coincidentally, I have 23 crates and a Ghastly Gibus [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Ghastly_Gibus] I'm willing to trade for a copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Any takers?

To be fair, most people will probably use this to trade games they don't play anymore for other games not to trade tf2 hats for games.

Edit: just realised you can only trade gift games right now so nvm...

But I've got a Strange Knife now...Mentlegen?
Pfft, everyone knows Strange Stickybomb launcher and Strange Grenade Launcher is were it's at. For the gentleman favouring the more unstable part of nitroglycerine and potassium :>

I like this update tbh, makes scamming a lot harder. Most scammers were asking for 10 of your items for 5 of theirs, and they would trade 3 upfront and you 8 upfront, since 8 was the trade limit, but with the new trade on steam you can add as many items you want, the trade window extends :p

Only place left for scammers are those trading items for cash instead of games I guess, atleast that I can think of.

You can't trade "used" games, only gams you've recived in gift or not yet opened, there's a new option now besides "Gift", which is too keep it and trade it.

Though not all games are available for that, they said they are getting more third-party games involved though, to be available for trade =)

Hey, not a bad deal for someone who's poor like myself. I don't really care about hats anyway, so I'd be happy to get rid of some in exchange for games.

Good luck with that. Just about every player has a Gibus and a boatload of crates.

I like the idea. I'm the only gamer among my friends (well, almost, but those that are are peculiar cases), so I have the extra HL2 and HL2:Ep.1 lying there for years, since I bought the Orange Box. I am sure I can trade these two away for another game or lots and lots of hats in TF2 (I am really unlucky in that department...1000 hours of playtime, NO hat drops...)

I had a strange rocket launcher, but then I traded it for a vintage Axtinguisher. I might not see the value in a weapon that counts your kills, but then again I'm not that kind of person.

The FAQ also mentions that trading does not discriminate based on region. This is basically Valve introducing a way for people with horrible regional pricing (set up by publishers) to circumvent it in a way that isn't shady.

I have 22 Gibus's, all different colours. Yes I love them.

OT: Great idea, should be noted that you can trade games for games and not just hats.
