I have a ton of crates that I will never open and many other items if someone wants to trade something for.
I hate crates...whenever I get a crate i drop, I delete it at once...or I get a curious "Hmm, this might contain the unusul hat I want with satisfactory effect". It's like gambling...too me atleast ;_;

I'll trade my bill's hat for RAGE in an instant, fucking hats. I don't understand them
Ditto. Can there be an option to trade all my hats for games on my Steam account? Now that would be an idea I would get behind.

I have never bought a key to unlock them. I don't pay for stuff like that. I can play the game without whatever is in there. Like you, I see it as gambling.

Actually, I emailed Robin Walker once asking him if the crates came with the contents pre-defined or if there was a die roll at the point of uncrating. He answered that the second is correct, which was a bit disappointing...the crates don't contain anything. They just give you the opportunity to roll a die. So, if you give a crate and the guy who opens it finds an unusual, it does not mean that if you had opened it you'd get an unusual...

The implication that people would trade games for cosmetic items in one game is so ridiculous and stupid that I think this may be the lowest that I have ever seen gamers sink to, and I've seen he TF2 forum. This is my new standard for the madness and balls to the walls fuckery that gamers can reach.

My brain hates me, can someone explain this to me? Preferably in small words.

Edit: Never mind, brain works now.

Cry sum moar? Seriously, you'd only be trading virtual games for virtual items, so I don't see how this could be considered ridiculous or stupid. If I still had my duplicate copy of Half-Life 2, I would have gladly traded it for a nifty hat. Who could refuse a free hat?

Also, you have a very strange definition of ridiculous and stupid.

Making TF2 free was probably the best move Valve has done in history. More players = more people buying silly hats for outrageous prices.

And now that includes people buying games from steam for hats.

Damn, Valve is so sly.

When you gift on Steam, the recipient gets a poppup saying "you've received a gift, click here to open." They can then choose to open the game and add it to their list of games, or just close the window and ignore it. I don't know how a player is supposed to recover that window if they didn't mean to close it, but I do know the sender can choose to re-send it, or just send it to some one more accepting of the gift. I'm really not sure how this system helps anyone.

No, no no, the phrase is:
CRY. SOME. MMOOOOORRRRRRREEEEEEEE!!!

Also, I don't care what you think and I don't expect anyone to see the same way as me. From every standpoint I can take this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of (related to games). Maybe I just know how baffling trading a mesh for an entire project is or maybe I just have a different notion of cultural capital versus monetary capital but this is the dumbest.

This actually sounds pretty cool. I have tons of TF2 hats that I don't care about and am willing to trade away for games.

Well, I agree with your concept that art (cultural capital) is sort of priceless, but since people do put a price on art (video games in this case), it's not far fetched to make the reasoning "Hat = $, Art (Video Games) = $, Ergo: Hats = Art (Video Games)". In other words, if you can buy games and hats with money, you can certainly trade games for hats and vice-versa.
