Valve Kicks Off Grand Left 4 Dead 2 DLC Experiment

The studio is attempting to build a campaign with as little story as possible.

Valve has decided to do something a little different for a next batch of Left 4 Dead 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Left-4-Dead-2-Xbox-360/dp/B002BRZ852/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298027376&sr=8-1] DLC. Rather than meticulously planning the whole thing itself, Valve is turning the process over to the L4D community, and letting it have a say in how the new campaign goes together.

On the L4D blog [http://www.l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=5019], Valve said that community modder Matthew Lourdelet had show the studio the start of new campaign he was working on, "Cold Stream." Valve said that it had been tempted to help him finish it and get it out to people as soon as possible, but had resisted the urge because it wanted to try an experiment.

Valve said that the previous campaigns that it had released for L4D2 had all been very story-orientated, so with "Cold Stream" it wanted to take the completely the opposite tack and focus entirely on gameplay, with no new story or audio included in the campaign. It also wanted to hear from L4D fans about what they'd like to see in the campaign. To that end, Valve has set up a special forum [http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1088&order=desc] for "Cold Stream," where people can leave their suggestions. So far people have put forward ideas like boss battles, rooms filled with explosive barrels, and "gauntlet" levels where the only way to survive is to keep running.

Valve has not decided exactly when the new DLC - which will also include the rest of the campaigns from the first Left 4 Dead - will be released, but it will be after Portal 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Portal-2-Playstation-3/dp/B003O6E3C8/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1298027677&sr=1-1] comes out in April, so it won't be for a few months at least. There will be a beta version for players on the Mac or PC however, so players on those platforms will be able to give it a try slightly earlier.

Since when did Left 4 Dead 2 have a story to begin with?

OUCH! Right in the story departments nutsacks!

This would probably be a turn for the better. I mean, Left 4 Dead 2 is game-y, and it shouldn't bother trying to be something it isn't.

I'd still love some new dialog lines... But this may turn into something quite awesome. I wonder when they'll release it ?

I cannot wait, I love all Community Mods endorsed by Valve and for good reason.

It'll save them lots of money by not having the actors come in and record more lines...

Can I suggest that they make Half Life 3?

OT: This is a good idea. Getting the community to come up with ideas will give them so many different ideas that it'll be a really great DLC.

im all for the Gaunlet idea. It wouldnt be a zombie game without at least one more epic chase sequence, a la the last mission in L4D2 in the sewers.

So they want me to buy DLC that I could get from a modder for free...?

Alrighty then, looks like thats another developer off the reliable list.

Next up, Riot. OH GAWD.

pretty easy then since theres little story to begin with. I've gotten bored of L4D so i don't have the games anymore, its just too repetitive for me.

Interesting, while I'm disappointed that there won't be any new dialog it'll be great to see the Left 4 Dead formula get changed up.

On a completely contradictory note, I'm so happy that they're updating more of the original Left 4 Dead maps :D

The only way I'd ever get left 4 dead 2 is if they had an option to COMPLETELY swap the characters for the ones in L4D 1.

Though I would like to see a level where the survivors spawn in random spots and have to survive solo until they find each other and stick together.

They wanted to help the modder finish his mod, but they didn't actually decide to do that and now make a new Campaign themselfs.
Also valve dlc is free unless microsoft foces them to charge for it...so why hate valve :D
