HA! I was right! There won't be an episode 3!
Does being right about not getting something bring you any joy?
(This is assuming you like Half Life of course.)

I had heard rumors in the past that Episode 3 was in fact going to be Half-Life 3, and this would probably be a clear indication of that.

So Valve says they want shorter development times on their games. Isn't that what they were trying to do with Episodic games in the first place? :p
Seriously though, I had a feeling that Episode 3 might turn in to Half-Life 3. I'm curious how they're going to stretch out the plot they had planned for Episode 3 into a full game, though.

. But that concept is now out the window, replaced replaced with an approach that treats "entertainment as a service."
Sorry to nit pick, but you repeated replaced.

Also, good for VALVe! :D

The Goodyear Newell says so much yet so little. Maybe he should take a break from the bacon grease sandwiches and focus on getting Episode 3 out the door before at some point in the near future. There is simply no excuse outside of apathy or laziness as to why Episode 3 isn't out already. Valve is well aware at how ridiculously overdue it is and simply can't be bothered to give a shit because games like Left for Dead and Portal 2 are easier to monetize with DLC and the like.

"With episodes, I think we accelerated the model and shortened development cycles with it."

Half Life 2: episode 2 came out in 2007.
Half Life 2: Episode 3 is still not out four years later.

So they certainly have taken normal development times and threw them into hyperdrive!

Valve, I love you, but you drive me up the wall sometimes. How about you release Episode 3, and THEN grow out of your episode phase, huh?

Ahh, Valve.

Constantly telling us everything except that one particular thing that we all want to hear.

I think this is cool, but it does create some problems. Reviews are going to be reviewing products that simply don't reflect what they are 2 or 3 years later (or, potentially overcompensate) and very few other companies are in the situation where they can do this (continual development for a single fee product).

Is Gabe slowly turning into Cevat Yerli or Peter Molyneux? Promising things that will never come, and making up things on the spot when the press is in his face? He seems to care more about saying silly things then making games for the fans at this point.

I'd see that happening if there was Steam was on the consoles. Yes, Steamworks on the PS3 is a step forward, but what are the odds of Microsoft allowing Valve to do that?

Either way, it's still a bit too early to tell, and they haven't mentioned anything about Episode 3. My guess is that they'll start talking about it come E3, but even then, that's not guaranteed.

Good news: This pretty much confirms they're not making Episode 3, which probably means they're working on Half-Life 3 instead.

Bad news: This is Valve we're talking about. If they are making HL3, it's going to take a very, very long time.

Is it really fair to say that Valve is over it "episodes phase" when it has not finished the episodes that were planned at the start of said phase? That is like a death metal band releasing a handful of metal singles from an upcoming metal album, then touring as a reggae outfit and saying that they're bored with the old sound.
