Heh. Good for them.

Suggestion for Valve's next step: ValveTV.

Because once you have the advertising down, filling in the rest of the day is easy.

Valve have always had the right idea of who their games are aimed at, and know how to please that audience.
I think a fair few companies could go without ad agencies.

Ads... for Valve... for Portal 2? You've gotta be kidding me. You have more than 3 million users in Steam and Portal 2 is hot topic for them all. Who needs ads... for this... AT ALL?!

Just imagine the power-of-mouth service these 3 million will do for you, Valve.

you truncated the quote.

I'm not really sure a valve TV spot will something new. Valve have, after all, proven themselves quite capable at advertising their own products in an efficient, eyecatching way. 3 words:

Meet the team.

What I'm curious to see is the failed pitches by the ad agencies. I want to know how far off mark they made them.

Makes a lot of sense, I've seen some truly shocking game advertisements around, some agencies really don't understand the whole games industry and come out with crap like "your mum will hate it" or that sex thing in the UK.

Good move in my opinion.

I remember the very first Advert for Kingdom Hearts 1 and it really drawed you into being interested, I thought Sora at first was a girl (Kairi) >.<

Then when the ad for KH2 came out, it was just....crap.

Well, no-one knows the material better than they do. They're not selling cars or kitchenware, they're selling games and if the 'Meet the ...' vids are any indicator, then I'm expecting something special.

On a similar note, is anyone else getting PISSED OFF by the Homefront advert before almost every Escapist video?

I hope this works out for them.
If only because of my burning and probably somewhat unhealthy hatred for Ad agencies.

5 years from now - Valve holds monopoly over marketing business.

But seriously, good for them. I can't imagine Portal 2 commercial garnering much hype if it was just some game footage snippets with a heavy metal voice over showing a person shooting blue and orange portals around.

That just means Valve just saved themselves 25 million dollars:

Valve proves once again that if you have the goods to back it up, you can continue to give the finger to every facet of the corporate environment. Good on you, Doug.

Valve has always had the best marketing materials of any game company. Not only do I think this is a super smart idea (for all of the reasons cited) but I'm actually excited to see the ad.
