Valve Says PS3 Complexity Hinders Game Development

Dear Valve: If a handful of small-time indie programmers can get to grips with the architecture to the extent that they can create fully functional and well rounded games for the Playstation store, without breaking down in tearful press announcements regarding the SDK, then I'm sure it shouldn't be all too hard for a crew of established game developers such as yourselves.

So quit whining and make the fucking games.

And yet the PS3 has a higher ratio of games rated 8/10 or higher than any other system currently on the market.

Someone's not checking his facts...
And the best games made have almost all been PC or Xbox/Xbox 360. Shall I list a few?

Thief. Thief 2. Dawn of War. Winter Assault. Dark Crusade. KotOR. KotOR2. Baldur's Gate. Baldur's Gate 2. Planescape Torment. Diablo 2. Starcraft. Halo. Halo 3. Gears of War. Gears of War 2. Homeworld. Homeworld 2. Master of Orion 2. Sins of a Solar Empire. Dwarf Fortress. System Shock. System Shock 2. Mask of the Betrayer. World of Warcraft. Guild Wars. Nox. Company of Heroes.

Now your turn - see if you can find a game on the PS3 that compares to any of these.

The PS3 has no games that compare to any of the ones I listed.
Amazing. Your point crashed and burned on your first example. As fails go, thats pretty impressive.

Metal Gear Solid 4 crushes Thief and Thief 2. From then on, yeah, its basically a matter of opening a list of Ps3 exclusives and picking the one in question. Killzone 2 > Halo 1 and 3. Valkyria Chronicles > Kotor. LittleBigPlanet > everything.

Wtf? First, you can't compare metal gear solid 4, a recent game, to thief, a game more than 10 years old. That's retarded. Second, if Killzone 2 is a "Halo Killer" then why isn't it a system seller like Halo, or why didn't it get fantastic reviews? I'm not saying Halo 3 deserved the stellar reviews it got, but over all, it was a solid above average game. The reviews I saw for Killzone 2 were average to slightly above average ( I imagine the PSM gave it stellar reviews though).

Did I just hear someone claim MGS4 (a sad attempt at a stealth game) is better than the pinnacles of the stealth genre? Haha, oh wow.

As to the other games, Valkyria Chronicles and LittleBigPlanet are rather laughable. Killzone 2 is a decent game, but the gameplay isn't as comfortable and well-designed as Halo 3's, and its story is even more shallow.

Yes, thats why the Ps3 has low quality games like LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles and Metal Gear Solid 4,
Your logic is nonsensical. If it was sarcasm please remove everything that's not LittleBigPlanet from that list. If it was literal please remove LittleBigPlanet from that list.

Valve backed themselves into a corner, and refuse to admit they were wrong, despite all evidence to the contrary.
I c what u did thar.
Very clever :D

A journalist asked the question, a Valve developer answered it matter-of-factly. Read the post I linked to above. There's no whining going on.

I'm pretty sure the guys at Valve are as tired of hearing the question about why they aren't developing for the PS3 as Kojima is about MGS4 not being on the 360.

If by superior you mean: Filling up a game with 9 hours and a half of cutscene. Then yes MGS4 is superior.

I just had to. ^^

(But to be honest MGS1 is much better than MGS4. At least theres no tranq. gun. But thats another debate.)

That is some of the biggest bullshit I have ever heard.

I really makes no sense. Why would you ever make something harder to use when there is another similar product that is far easier to use?
Supposedly, it has to do with the fact that their processors or whatever (I'm bad with hardware terms) are incredibly powerful, but one of the side effects of that is that interfacing with them is a pain in the ass. This is fifth-hand info, though, so there's a good chance it's inaccurate.

But according to none other than said in February [http://www.scei.co.jp/index_e.html] that Sony had intentionally designed the PS3 to be difficult to program so that developers wouldn't be able to maximize its potential right away.

Haaaahhh....*ahem*...hooooo.

You know what, Hirai? You can try and justify that monolith of trash all you want. The minute you admit you've purposely throttled back its potential right from the beginning, when you hyped it to be this groundbreaking system that would push all the boundaries of gaming? You've totally invalidated yourself.

Ahhh...
Rock on, Valve. Rock on.

First this thread started out as people whining about valve, which was pretty pointless anyway. Now we're on to which games are better than others. Does any of this matter? People will always view different games differently. What you may think is awesome others may think is bad. Can we please just accept this and move on?

OT: I think valve have the right to do whatever they want with their games. They went through the trouble to make them and if they don't feel like spending time, money and manpower on porting it their games to the PS3 then thats their decision. Nothing I say or think will make any difference.

Get your pinnacles right. There's more to stealth than just the shadows, and the game with only one approach is by definition inferior to a game wherein every aspect and manner of stealth can and is used flawlessly. Metal Gear Solid 4 wins hands down
Meh, I disagree. I'm not saying MGS4 isn't innovative, but it certainly can't match Thief's revolutionary gameplay. And again, when your comparing games 10 years apart, you have to look at not only their gameplay, put what kind of imprint they leave on the gaming culture. I would argue Thief has left a much bigger imprint. Besides, Thief's plot was relatively simple and interesting, whereas I've heard MGS4's is headaching-ly complicated.

EDIT: Ok i just watched the youtube thing Dingo posted, and I'm already hating it. I have know idea about the story, but isn't it supposed to be in the future? And are there not guns? Why the fuck would they get into some hugely elaborate, knife fight when it looks as if you have killer fucking robots standing right there? I HATE plot? holes like that, because then you know the maker of the game is just doing that to try and make his game seem more badass. Just shoot the ************ and be over with it.

It's kind of funny, because everyone and there mother has this idea of "Oh well, if a game doesn't do fiscally well in it's target market, it's a failure and is thus labeled a 'test' game"

I bring this up because Sony's master plan is dumb. I won't lie, it's an amazing machine, but it strayed from the PS2 values of anyone-can-program-for-this-sh$%.

So since you're taking titles from 3 different systems, does that mean we can use things from the PS2 and PS1?

Because in that case your whole point kinda falls apart. Unless you think comparing 10+ years of bilateral game development to 3 years of linear development is actually fair.

Just wondering, have you actually played all of these games enough to make a comparison or are you just saying that because you only play PS3 and read reviews that are given out in Playstation magazines only? Seems pretty arrogant to say that LBP is better than every game out there.

Lol, it's funny how the fanboys fight over this. It is a bad choice on Sony's part, though: purposely inconveniencing developers?

Jesus Christ, you all need to calm down here. Firstly, Indigo you're entitled to your point of view, but as Thunderhorse31 pointed out, comparing the best games on one system to the worst on another is hardly a convincing argument. Personally I disagree with the comparisions between MGS4 and the Thief series, but again, IT'S A MATTER OF FUCKING OPINION, can't you see that blatantly presenting evidence as to why your opinion is "correct" directly towards those that disagree is getting absolutely nowhere?

What needs to be said here is that the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 are different consoles. Sure, the PS3 may have a better range of games but it's also a lot more expensive and (apparently) harder to develop for. Each console operates within its own market niche, as does the Wii and the PC, no console is better than the other because they are incomparable - they target completely different market segments.

Argument is now over, get over the fanboy urges, everybody.
