YEY for diversity in games!

Also is practice spelled wrong, or is it a British thing?
Practise is British English, practice is American English, from what my brief glimpse at the internet has garnered.

Well, let's put it this way, how long would it take you to learn sign language?
13 weeks, 2 days, 7 hours, 46 minutes and 33 seconds.

Give or take five seconds.

This game is taking about 4 years to make because of ONE CHARACTER?
Yeah...the attention to detail is inspirational and simultaneously frustrating...
I just guess this is why Half Life has the best set-piece and WTFOMGCOOL moments in games.

Oh, Christ. You've got me doubting my own language now. How do we spell it over here?! The spell checks accept both! I need to find me a dictionary!

Back with dictionary. Now, according to this, practise is actually an American version of the word. Dunno if that's true or not, but the Oxford dictionary says so!

Well at least they have a good reason to be taking so long. Also, I learned a bit of German from playing insane amounts of CoD:UO so maybe I'll pick up some sign language. Thank you for being useful, Valve, and maybe we can learn a bit from your games. It's nice to see a game company actually caring about the fans and even the deaf.
I don't want to learn. I play games to have fun. If I want to learn sign language I could've done so 15 times over during the wait for Episode 3.

First of all; FINALLY! It's great to hear some news about Episode 3! That makes my weekend complete!

Secondly, I love the idea of Alyx and Dog communicating silently; I just want to know how on earth they're going to get a ten foot tall robot to use sign language.

[small]That would be like getting Cthulhu to learn french! With his hands![/small]

Alyx: Yes, Gordon. I taught Dog sign language so we could communicate silently. Watch, I'll signal him to take out that guard.

Gordon: That's pretty cool, but you know Dog is just a machine right? A glorified robot.

Alyx: Yeah, so?

Gordon: Well, how long did it take you to teach Dog? Like more than 3 years?

Alyx: Yeah, just about.

Gordon: Well, why didn't you just create a handheld device so you could contact him silently from a distance? That way he doesn't have to literally watch you and read your signing?

Alyx: Gordon, I liked you better when you didn't talk.

I feel bad that I am not playing a Valve game right now. Valve is the best video game company on earth,at least that's how it seems right now.
They deserve even more attention then they normally get...

I would love to show people that think that video games are all about killing etc. these videos and ask them how they feel about it.

That was some pretty neat stuff. I enjoyed the videos and it's cool to see Valve and Gabe interested in some of the more niche demographics in gaming (Deaf people, etc.).

[waves arms about in a frantic manner]
[makes a turning a wheel motion with both hands]
[one hand moves around space in a square]
[finger points to watch on wrist]
[finger taps watch on wrist]
[face contorts into an expression of resigned furstration]
[middle finger]

I really hope Valve have learnt enough sing language to appreciate what I just said.

I'd have thought subtitles suffice?
Except that text leaves out things like sarcasm and emotion. I mean, how many times have you said something facetiously or sarcastically on the internet, only to have them take you seriously? Or made a post that you had intended to be light and jokey, only to instead have it interpreted as being defensive and/or offended?

While its a neat idea...it seems kind of unnecessary. I'm pretty sure the deaf can read subtitles just fine Valve. This feels like a stall.

Willing to wait though...its all worth it when it comes to Valve...

Gordon: So why did you teach Dog sign language?

Alyx: Well, because I had a crush on this hot deaf guy I saw at the super market.

Gordon: Wow......and you programmed Dog so you could practice?

Alyx: Yes. *blushes*

Gordon: But wouldn't you need a significant understanding of sign language to program such complex things into Dog?

Alyx: Ofcourse.

Gordon: Ummmm........ So with such an understanding why would you need practice.

Alyx: I liked it better when you wouldn't talk.

Even though this news doesn't really apply to me...

HOORAY! Episode 3 news!!!

---------

Maybe Gordon's muteness isn't just a design decision. Maybe he actually is mute.

That's nice, but please don't tell me they've been taking this long with the episode just because of this. Seriously?

Well, they already have a mute, might as well add in a deaf character too.

On a more serious note, I can't wait. I'm kinda skeptical of how this will actually play out, but I trust valve to release a good game. They've done so over and over and over before. Always worth the wait.

If this is why Ep3 is taking so long then I'd be kinda pissed. I mean... I know Valve like to get everything polished and perfect, but there has to be a point where you decide it's good enough (and "good enough" can be a high standard so long as you recognise that true perfection is probably unattainable) and release.

I think that "good enough" point may be a little way before the point where you decide to go to the lengths of programming sign language into the game.

It's not a game. It's a short segment of a game. An episode, if you will.
