So, I heard that apparently, dawnguard causes vampires to come to towns and kill NPCs. On the one hand, it's a pretty cool idea, on the other, these can include merchants and misc quest givers.

There's quite a bit of rage surrounding this. I looked up a few forums, and people have been complaining about vampires killing a massive amount of people in cities, and a mysterious vampire traveller who can even enter houses to kill people. On the other hand, there's just as many people saying the ragers are over-reacting, that the vampires rarely kill anyone important.

Has anyone had this? I haven't had it much yet, but I practically only just made the decision not to join the vampires. There was a vampire master and his thrall in riften who killed some guy I didn't care about, but I suspect that's scripted.

Think I may go on the side of caution and only play as my new, evil character until I hear more.

I think I'm gonna avoid playing this until it's addressed/fixed. I'm pretty much done with the rest of the game, so it's not like I'd be losing critical quests, but still, I'm not thrilled with the idea of losing all these NPCs.

That's the thing, I don't know yet who's vulnerable (though I'd assume side/main quest givers are, as usual, invincible) and to how great an extent it is. As per usual, people are getting too caught up in massive arguments and rage about it to uncover any kind of truth.

As soon as I'd finished talking to the orc to start the DLC, some vampires appeared. No one died and I play on Normal (adept?). Don't see this being much of a problem (though it could be different on expert and master). If you cant stop vampires from killing people, you are not a very good vampire hunter.

Hmm, true. I've got a save from before I even downloaded it on my main playthrough, just in case, and anyone who plays bethesda games without making multiple saves per character is a downright fool. Which orc are you talking about? Did they tell you about the dawnguard to start the quest, or was it someone at the dawnguard? I honestly can't remember what race the dude was...I think he was a generic tough guy nord.

The fan backlash is really irritating me now. The people saying "bethesda are assholes for having vampires kill my NPCs!" are largely incredibly whiny, and the guys saying it's not are largely elitist, telling the complainers to "go find a game with crybaby difficulty lol". Whichever side you see, it's constant irritation, and no clear picture of what's actually happening.

I have had a few NPCs die that I didn't want dead so I reloaded. If you save before you go to cities you can avoid untimely deaths. Does anyone know if the attacks end when you finish the questline? I think I am on the last quest now, so it'd be nice to finally stop these rampaging vamps. :p

I haven't gotten far in the DLC yet, but I've seen this happen with the boyfriend.

If that's true... that may actually rekindle my interest in Skyrim. dawnguard sounds better by the minute.

I think I am almost done with the Dawnguard-side of the questline and I have got to say that it has exceeded my expectations. It's loaded with content and has some really cool stuff in it. Some of the NPCs in the questline are actually likable. Go figure. Wouldn't say its better than Tribunal or Shivering Isles but its up there.

Not quite sure. Much of it is masked with warring fanboy rage, but I've heard a couple of people saying the attacks at least seem to ease off after the main quest, if not stopping altogether.

I haven't played very far into it, but I absolutely love some of the gothic elements. It almost feels like an old hammer horror movie in a nordic setting. Not incredibly scary, of course, but quite atmospheric.

In truth I put Skyrim down as soon as I finished the main quest line. It was a rather easy final boss, which just left disappointment. Might be time to pick it back up again.

I really like the gothic feel too, but my favorite atmospheres are actually found later in the questline. Without spoiling anything plot-wise, there is an enormous open area you go to late in the questline that is bigger than Blackreach and is possibly the most stunningly beautiful landscape in the whole game.

That actually sounds pretty cool. Skyrim definitely needed things like this to stop it feeling so static. I'll have to pick up Dawnguard at some point, preferably after some inevitable balancing/bug fixing.

If you don't want a certain NPC in a town to die, travel only in the day time if you are entering the town. Also, if you see a NPC by the name Traveler, stay away for it is a vampire and can attack you and everyone around him/her.

Have you tried the new side quest with the ghost in the new Dwarven place? Not only is the ruined Dwarven cave amazing, but the entire quest is one of my favorites. The giant boss battle at the end and the loot you get from it is one of the best experiences I had in Skyrim.

I don't believe so. Where do you get it? All I have done so far is 90% of the mainquest, some Soul Cairn quests and the crossbow side-questline. That sounds pretty awesome.

Btw. Best part about Dawnguard is the awesome Morrowind reference in the Soul Cairn. I was cracking up so hard.

Or just kill him? Does it cause a bounty?
