To everyone who is flaming hem dazon 90:

Many individuals in the church thought that Darwin was a heratic a long time ago because evolution was never mentioned in the Bible. After reviewing it, the Vatican realized that it doesn't actually contradict anything.

That's what's going on. They are certainly not "spine-less" for admiting fault and none of you are being nice/understanding by blindly bashing them for it. The Vatican is attempting to bury the hatchet and being militant Atheists is just gonna create more tension and conflict. Shut up and be glad that you now don't have to listen to Catholics go on and on about how the chicken came first (unless you enjoyed and started the arguments. Then you deserve it for refusing to accept that other people have the right to believe what they want.)

Also: Typical Escapists claiming that his point is invalid just because he argued it in an immature way.

Well, it's now official. The Vatican has admitted that Darwin was on the right track with the theory of evolution, and has stated that Evolutionary theory is compatible with Christian beliefs, even though it would appear to conflict with the book of Genesis. Although the church never officially rejected evolutionary theory, it was common for people to reject evolution on the basis that it contradicted the Bible.
not really a big suprise, you know it was a catholic monk who invented the big bang theory? christianity have had some effective minds working to find the hidden truth behind or existence...

I'm happy I am a Buddhist, but good to see the church will listen to sense and reason maybe once in a while.

No, It's because it's the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Oh god(hehe)... spineless, absolutely spineless. Am I the only one seeing what's happening here? (well if you don't then: Growing number number of Atheists with Evolution being one of the main reasons, way to solve the problem? fix your beliefs until it works with them the church has been doing this sort of thing ever since ancient times (Christmas anyone?))

On that note I guess it is kind of good that they can adapt to popular times and all, so good on them for finding a loop-hole.
completely agree

For starters people should not confuse Darwin's theory with today's theory of evolution. He only rolled the snowball down the hill.

Now, as for the article, to be honest I only skimmed-read it and what I took from it is just that the Vatican's official position is now that of "Inteligent Design" (Which was originaly developed to counter Darwin's theory....well ok..."evolution" in general), and actually I though that had been their official position for quite some time now. The article does say that the Vatican has become more flexible towards the view that we and apes share a common ancestor but I think this is just them pleasing the crowds. I cant seriously believe they would grant us that view as acceptable and compatible with their doctrines!

That, or they realize that Jesus didn't write the Book. I mean, really. If it was written by Man, why are so many people so adamant on it being absolute?

I love the way my Pastor put the whole God vs. Science thing.

He said "Science and Christianity should never conflict, because God is a scientist."

I think that's because it's the 200th year since darwin was born, and 150 years since he published his theory of evolution. It's a big anniversary!

Edit: Oh, someone already answered you... my bad for not bothering to read the second page, lol.

It was news to me that there was any conflict between Darwin and the Vatican before. I went to a Catholic primary and secondary school and there was never any mention of 'controversy'. Basic evolutionary theory and natural selection featured in the biology syllabus as normal. Creationism was mentioned in R.E., but it was lumped in the same group as lunar conspiracy theorists and the Flat Earth Society. The 'history' part of the Old Testament doesn't really start until Abraham. Everything before that is a mixture of parable and myth cribbed from other cultures such as the Byzantines.

Ah well. Holding up a big sign aimed at the creationist movement with "WE'RE NOT WITH THEM" written on it is always worth doing, I guess.

Well, that shows how much you paid attention in history.

For the record, Darwin was a Christian until the day he died.
Then he converted to Shinto
Sorry I missed when the point in time that he went to Japan.
Charles Darwin
an Agnostic would be the more correct description of my state of mind.
