Venting about Valve

Sorry, this is really just me venting, and I don't expect anyone to hear me out, but I've got to tell someone and get this off my chest so I don't smash a lamp or something.

Now, I love Valve. I love everything about them. I love their games, I love Steam, I even find their fanbase the most difficult to get into a pointless argument with. But now those fuckers have stolen ten dollars from me, and I want to throw Gabe Newell out of a moving car and into another moving car... full of angry weasels.

I went on Steam and tried to download the first Deus Ex game because I've heard good things about the series and wanted to start at the beginning. So, I found the game on Steam, set up a new account just to purchase it (long story, don't ask), paid $9.99 of my hard-earned money, sat through a brief download, and VOILA'! The game is now NOWHERE TO BE FOUND on my computer. I checked the Steam library, my downloads, my games folder, under the keyboard, in my shoe, and the fucking game was nowhere to be found. The money is sure as shit gone from my bank account, and Steam won't allow me to re-download a game I've already paid for for free, BECUZ DAT WOOD BEE SMARRT.

And yeah, it was only ten bucks. But goddamn it, they were MY TEN BUCKS!

dont get me wrong, Dues Ex 1 is an amazing game but.....you know it goes on sale for like $2.50 8-10 times a year?

contact customer support, they havent steered me wrong yet. Even when i bought a game from a different distributor, tried to activate it on steam and it didnt work due to a fault on the distributors part, the customer support resolved the issue even though it came out of their pocket.

Wow, really? That's pretty awesome of them.

And I really have no problems shelling out ten clams just for the convenience of not waiting for a sale.

Try customer support and see if they will help you. They've always been more than accommodating with me.

If all else fails, you could always ask for a refund. I had to do that during the summer sale over something that was my fault and Valve gave me my money back in Steam wallet form.

I've never had an issue with Valve that I can remember - so anything there was would have been solved pretty quickly. I'd suggest doing what everyone else suggested, or waiting a few hours for it to arrive. Not something I've needed to do, but their servers might be under heavy load or something.

A common problem with it not appearing in the library is that it may be set to only display installed or favourite games. In Library, at the top of the games list and next to the search bat should be a drop down menu. Make sure that it is set to All Games.

Assuming you downloaded to the default folders, it should have downloaded to
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\
So check there first

Also Steam does let you download a game you've purchased as many times as you want. It won't let you buy the game again though which I suspect is what you were trying to do.

If you still can't find it head over to
https://support.steampowered.com/
And contact support. From my experience, they should be able to sort it out fairly quickly if the problem is on their end.

There are only two things I can think of.

Go into your Library, and see what category it's showing (next to the Search feature.) It should be set to All Games.

If that's not it, then it's possible you've bought the game as a gift. Check your email, you should've received a receipt from Steam when you bought the game. See what it says.

You guys have been very helpful, but:

Well, they've been ignoring me with admirable gusto.

Good for you, I still can't. I don't know why, maybe I just can't find the option, but I've searched quite thoroughly.

you've checked

C:\Program files\Steam\steamapps\common

correct?
Best bet is to re-insail Steam its self then re-download.
Yep. Nothing there.

You hadn't already installed it, right?

In that case, it wouldn't be in the steamapps folders, would it? No files were downloaded yet.

Check your library and see if the filter is set to only show installed or favorited games. If that's not the problem, steam support's all you got.

Did you really pay the 10$ though?

What I mean is, all you know now is that you don't have the game, but was any money transferred?
What payment method did you use?
If money changed hands, you should have received an e-mail from Steam thanking you for your purchase in which there's a confirmation number you can use to contact Steam support.

The transaction should also appear in your account history like so:

The payment was definately made. I recieved a receit email from Steam, and my bank confirms $10 out.

Just contact customer support.

They even reset my security question to reset my password within a matter of minutes, they're usually the first port of call for any Steam issues.

As many have said, contact support, they have generally been extremely helpful, and while not always speedy, it's never taken more than a couple of days.

Weird - I just downloaded that same game yesterday and it showed up fine, files, desktop icon and all.

Also, doesn't Steam let you re-download games as many times as you want? I have Fallout 1 and 2 on 3 different computers now.

Yeah, I was going to say this...

I've uninstalled and redownloaded games 4 or 5 times in the past, and I'm almost positive there's no limit, so either Steam is seriously messed up for you, or you're an idiot.

If the game isn't appearing in his library then he won't have the option to re-download it.

Like everyone's saying, best just to wait for support, give it a couple of days.

I've glanced at most of the other suggestions others have made so far, and they mirror most of what I was going to say.

However, there's one option I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Is it possible you purchased the game as a gift instead of directly to that new account? (still confused as to why you created a new account for one game, but whatevs)

If you did, then all you need do is open your Steam Inventory and send the gift to yourself. Easy peezy.

Let us know, in the thread, if you manage to get this resolved. I'm willing to lend any assistance I can.

Have you tried restarting Steam?

It seems to solve most of the porblems i get when they arise.

Not much more to add really... you seem to have a proof of purchase so contact customer support. I had this issue once when I tried to buy Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. I eventually got a refund. I then bought it on GoG.

And that's my story. Also, whenever you're looking to buy older games, always check GoG first. Chances are they have it, along with a bunch of extras to go along with it, for $10 or less. And it'll work on modern operating systems.

I'll stop pimping GoG now. Reluctantly.
