Ok, so recently discovering a little band called "Megadriver" and loving their covers of some Sonic2 songs, I decided to hunt for other good video game cover bands. Found this article that listed a bunch (eleven to be exact):

http://www.slobsofgaming.com/article/97253/the-11-best-video-game-cover-bands/

Anyway, have any of you heard of some good game cover bands? know any good covers at all? Know the bands in that article? Discuss

They've played PAX a couple of times and I have both of their CDs. It's just so great to hear a video game cover band who plays something other than hard electric guitar.

TAM.

Though I guess that their primarily doing Touhou music doesn't help, but...

And finally, see how many you can identify!

There's some Final Fantasy, Haruhi, Touhou, Dragon Quest.

I cant even identify a quarter of it, though... regardless, it's mildly awesome.

Marvellous! I found this. I was going to create a new VG cover band thread, but if Isaac Dodgson doesn´t mind (please let me know, if you do), I´m going to use this. So, as a gamer and a heavy user of music, it´s inevitable that I would greatly enjoy VG music covers (be it jazz, metal or even symphonic), and I really do. While I´m aware that remixes and covers don´t hit everybody´s sweet spot, I respect fellow human beings who enjoy game music and have enough musical talent to recreate some of the most memorable and almost iconic tunes. To me remixing/covering VG music is an integral part of gaming culture. To offer something to the OP and posters, here are some of my current favorites

Minibosses - Metroid
The Advantage - Gradius 2 / Solar Jetman (Live)
Doom 2 Remix - Map 23 - No Smoking Area
and Final Fantasy VII One Winged Angel (Eminence Symphony)

There are many more great remixes/cover bands, and I intend to broaden my horizon even more, with your help preferably. So, I´m going to continue indulging myself in this relatively unknown genre and let you know about my findings, should you be interested. You are of course most welcomed to share your favorites with us (It would be even better if you yourself have covered VG music and would like to let us hear it).

Also, most bands I know cover mainly old-school VG music, ranging from amiga to snes. If you are familiar with more recent remixes/covers, I would gladly check them out. Secondly, I´m already quite aware of the existence of ocremix.org (well it would have popped out eventually.)

Powerglove are by far the coolest :) They do have a Myspace page but I can't provide the link on account of effort and what not.

Edit: Off the top of my head, I think it was /vgmetal

The only one I have heard of is Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain, but I don't think they are quite what you mean...

I wanted to the first to mention powerglove, but sadly, as usual, I was beat to the punch.
But they are certainly awesome enough to justify repeating the obvious.
Powerglove is great. The lead singer/bassist has blue koopa shell shoulder peices on stage. I was so impressed.

I like my remixes and covers to be close enough to the original to be able to replace it.

Look at what happened with Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, they actually got OCRemix to do the music, because they had access to artists who knew the music through and through.. McVaffe rocks for this, all of his Street Fighter remixes could work in the actual game, and that's why they're great.

Ooh, that sounds good. It´s nice to see some "real" bands have sense of humour enough to do stuff like that.

Would also recommend trying Armcannon and Year 200X. Not quite as powermetal as Powerglove but still kick some serious ass.

Glad you enjoy it. And don´t worry; your hour of glory will come.

And a big thanks to you. This was new information to me.

By the way, did you know that nintendocore is an actual genre of music? Interesting, I find it.

EDIT: Ok, some Armcannon here and Year 200X here (YAY! Silius). Also, found this quite interesting (for those who remember Turrican). Huelsbeck seems to be more popular than I thought.

The only band I've heard of, are the Black Mages. Who cover various FF songs, they now have 3 albums! People must really like them.

People really do like them. Especially those who love FF series and Uematsu´s work, like myself (actually own two of their albums, trying to get my hands on the third.) It´s great when composers have fun with their own creations.

Ocremix is a really capable community, granted. Covers that follow closely original´s footsteps do satisfy my nostalgic cravings, but It´s also good to have bands like The OneUps, who try to make something new and refreshing out of nostalgia infused material, while still maintaining the original feeling. Something for every needs.
