Final Fantasy IX wins for me with what I consider the best soundtrack in the history of gaming.

I really like the Shadow of the Colossus ones and Okami but my favorite series for music has always been the Ar Tonelico series. The music ranges thoroughly. I just like it because its really far off from what I hear normally. That and they made up the language that its sung in which is impressive to me.

Yes, I am so evil, I linked to TVTropes. An entire page of awesome, somewhat ambient music!

Sure, Fallout and Assassin's creed have some really atmospheric tones, but nothing compares to that of the entire NiGHTS soundtrack or Silent Hill games.
I beg to differ! (see above link, if you daaaare!!!)

*note that I was implying that half-life's music is western and not japanese

EDIT: And for more rocking music!

Never will I say that HL's music is brilliant. It's got some good tracks, especiallyfor the climatic battle at the end of Episode 1. Still, the game is usually best when they let the tone of the game speak for itself. It's got a few good tracks and a lot of them are VERY similar sounding. The post directly below yours actually has some really good examples of JP music.
Well being that most of the music i listen to is rock music and being a rock junkie, i can tell the differences between the moosics. And because HL1 is set in a futuritic(ish) place, you would assume that the music would be eletric sounding, etc etc.

And for more badass western video game rock music : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUCbflBkIgo&NR=1

Oh, and digital, I recommend you listen to these tracks:

I agree with so many aforementioned songs, so instead of just repeating one of them, I'll bring 2 unmentioned ones to the the table.

Yoshi's Island - Athletic

and Super Meat Boy - Dark World 4 (Hell) Theme

? I really like the soundtracks for the Metal Gear Solid games.

Also:

? Gotta say, Silent Hill has great music as well. It really contributes to the atmosphere of the game. And plus:

? Tales games have some great music too. <3 Especially their themes!

My iPod is basically ALL video game music.

I'd count certain songs from Dragon Age (Leliana's Song, I Am the One, along with its darker version, To Kill an Ogre, Challenge an Archdemon, the Camp Theme, and more recently Mages and Qunari on the Rise from the second game), Mass Effect (From the Wreckage and Spectre Induction from the first were AMAZING, from the second, the Suicide Mission theme), Modern Warfare 2 (I love all the music from that game), Crysis 2 (I haven't played it, but the track SOS New York is so freaking amazing), Monster Hunter, Bioshock...so much great music out there.

Another VG music thread? I'll just copy my response over:
Mostly from ME1 and ME2:
Most of this is just 4 notes played over and over again, yet it's so well done, portraying the scene, sadness and triumph perfectly.

to quote from the top youtube comment on the video:
"Every once in a while, there's a rare magic moment in game when soundtrack, game play, and story align in sync and make for a moment of unforgettable immersion. Running through gunfire on Virmire to this track was one of those rare moments for me."

[le snip]
It is an absolute crime to mention Mass Effect music and not bring up "Vigil".

That "magic moment in game when soundtrack, game play, and story align in sync and make for a moment of unforgettable immersion" happened for me at the end of Mass Effect.

I agree with rather a lot of the choices here, especially the Elder Scrolls games, Fallout games and GTA.
I'd also add the sound track both Baldur's Gate games, Red Dead Redemption, Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings and Civilization, and of course, Homeworld.

Oh man I love video game music!

Pieces from the Chrono Cross soundtrack and the Guild Wars soundtrack are almost always in my "relaxing background music" playlist.

And I know that it's could only be tangentially considering video game music, but the soundtrack for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was really well done.

Well, in my defence, Vigil is so relaxing that I don't recall it playing in the game, I don't acknowledge music or gameplay, just... flow, as Extra Credit would call it. It also happened to me at the end,
with the battle against sovereign intertying so perfectly with our battle against Sarren, t'was brilliant. Most satisfying end to any game I've had.
