For some reason today I've been going on a crusade against things that I think are obnoxious. Besides my self of course. To clarify this isn't a thread about cut scenes *Because lets face it, there's probably a ton of threads about those* but more of about the sudden trend in the video game industry where video game openings just don't seem to want to end. Ever. Go ahead and share your stories of never ending horror & boredom.
Mine starts with ME2. It's a nice opening, I'll give them that, but it just doesn't end and you have no option to skip the damn thing. Which is pretty sad, really, because I can name you quite a few N64 games that had the courtesy to let you skip that shit. What really gets to me though is how I have to go through the entire thing each time I want to make a character. If I fuck up one thing - just one thing - about my character then I either have to cope with the imperfection or restart the entire damn thing and go through the intro again. What especially pisses me off is how completely different the character looks during and after customization. An intro shouldn't be this self - indulgent. I don't care how much effort went into the damn thing, if my time isn't spent enjoying it then that only lessens all the work they had put into it. And that's minus all the times I had to sit through the opening without mentioning each play through I had on different difficulties. So I won't be looking to make just one character, I'll be looking to make one for each time I play the game. For the sake of argument lets say three playthroughs. Now imagine how much times I would fuck up on each character, and how much I'd have to sit through that intro. Now maybe you can imagine how much that intro pisses me off.
The second game that comes to mind is Skyrim. You have to sit through a wagon ride with obnoxious voice acting (Lokir instantly downplays the weight of the situation with his derpy - cartoonish voice) for a few minutes - This goes on forever. And only after you reach town does the game give you the option to load from there. But what pisses me off is that this goes on forever too. In previous Bethesda games you could make a save file right before going out into the world and alter your stats. So really, it just furthermore makes what they've done more unforgivable. Couldn't they at least give you the option to have a load 'after' the dragon comes? Because trust me, hearing Lokir's stupid 'you're not going to kill me!' Really wore thin the first time I heard it. And then after having the game waste your time (and may I remind you, this goes on forever even IF you load after the wagon BS) you have to go through what's essentially a tutorial that you just can't skip.
To be polite, this intro insults me. It wastes my time, it doesn't give me the option to skip *even though earlier Bethesda games did*, and as a final fuck you it gives you obnoxious voice acting. I'm happy that Lokir's dead, and I give Alduin praise for burning the entire place down.
